Cricket!

Ladies and gentlemen, in keeping with the Anglophilia of recent days, and also our vicious fight against Johnny Aussie, I'd like to ask a question:

How many of you know how cricket is played?

I'm from a non-cricket nation (US) and never understood the game...until I watched a really, really great movie (name escapes me currently) about an Indian colony and the Indians played the Brits in a game of Cricket to avoid paying double tax or something...and a guy from India was watching the movie with us...

Needless to say, we paused the movie and had him explain it to us...I think it'd be a fun game to play.

...that sounds interesting: would you mind awfully seeing if you could find out the name of the film, please?

It is fun, and moreover, it's great to watch. Good date stuff; you can get to know each other in the pauses between every single ball and the longer pauses between every single over ;)

Yea, I'll try figuring out what it was called. The film was made in India. The title started with an L, was a single word, and I believe it was the Indian word for "tax"

"Lagaan" was the name of the movie.

Good ratings from Yahoo users and Critics too. Truly excellent movie.

You might have some difficulty finding it depending on where you live. In America, even with our great capitalist movie market...my friend had to special order it...

Although my friend from India (who explained the game to us) had already seen it before he came to America (in India).

It's a great movie...but don't try watching it if you don't have a lot of time. Notice, 3h 40m.

I was flipping through the channels at oh 2:30am and I found a cricket game so I watched it. And I tried really really hard to understand it, even went to wikipedia.org to look up... About 30 minutes into the game I had an anorism, I woke up several days latter in a daze..............

...... needless to say i will be sticking to football, hockey, and of course the most manly sport in the world curling(sorry just had to make fun of canadian nieghbors will quick)

I saw Lagaan - thought it was quite good but really funny in places - especially when the only pads the Indians had were made out of bamboo.

Lagaan, great movie. Watched it last year and it's still kicking around my mind.

Anyway, from a non-Cricket country (USA) and both understand and love the game. I'll probably be stoned and tried as a traitor for saying this, but it beats baseball all hollow. It's fun, it's exciting, and it's possible to stay wake while watching a game. I'm even a pretty good player (Well, pretty good when compared to other players in New Jersey, and they're not very good) and have spent many an afternoon trying to get my friends to play with me. Sadly, no luck so far.

Oh, an added bonus, people from Britain always give me a rather strange look when I say "Sorry I'm late, I was out playing cricket". It's as if they simply can't fathom it. My boss at my old job practically had a heart attack when I first told him.

The qualified for the ICC knockout trophey, briefly putting them in the top 12 one day teams in the world. They were smoked by Australia and New Zealand in thier 2 pool matches.

Now they've failed to qualify for the 16 team world cup in 2007.

Is Canada a cricketing nation? I understand a little the game, like, you have to destroy (with the ball) the sticks besides the guy who must protect the sticks...

Right?

Well, I live in England...they play a game very similar to cricket, though apparently the aim is to lose all your wickets for as few runs as possible...suicide cricket, I guess. :p
But seriously, I do quite like cricket...though I'll only watch internationals and Twenty20 (or is it 20Twenty?). Can't stand county 5-dayers. The standard of cricket is generally, well, poor.

Right?
The Wickets behind and you have to eather
A) hit the wickets (Bowling)
B) Catch the batter out.

To get the batter out.

The batsman has to hit the ball as far a possable/out of the ground and run between the wickets to get a run. The aim is to get as many runs as possable without getting 10 batsmen out.

Canada has qualified, I think, for the ICC world cup.

I am from a cricketing nation, (England) but live in a nation that claims to never have heard of the game. Despite this all the local kids play cricket in the street. They just call it Taco (Nothing to do wiht Mexico, just the Portuguese for a bat.) As an organised sport it does not exist in Brazil however.

The 2007 world cup and the order the teams qualified in:

1. Australia
2. Sri Lanka
3. New Zealand
4. Pakistan
5. South Africa
6. West Indies
7. England
8. India
9. Zimbabwe
10. Kenya
11. Bangladesh
12. Scotland/Ireland
13. Scotland/Ireland decided in ICC trophey final soon
14. Canada
15. Bermuda
16. Holland/UAE decided in ICC trophey 4th/5th playoff soon

The top 11 teams were based on the ODI rankings at some stage late last year, hence New Zealand is quite high up and England is quite low. The remaining 5 teams have almost been decided through the current ICC trophey.

Lords, London
Eden Gardens, Kolkata
The Basin Reserve, Wellington
New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
Galle International Stadium, Galle (It was one of the most scenic before the tsunami near destroyed it)
Kensington Oval, Bridgetown

BTW, when i start rambling long things about cricket, odds are most of its coming from www.cricinfo.com

For the time being I am in Europe. My location changes rather frequently so finding out about any countries cricket matches would be helpful.

Also thank you all for all the info. Maybe when you are at your next match you can scan the audience and wonder hmmm... wonder if they are here :). I will probably do the same.

Trent Bridge is a brilliant ground (Though I may be biased being a Notts Fan).

And answering the question of the first post...

I don't like cricket! Oh No! I Love It!

I nearly watch all year round (Thanks to Sky), and Im looking at the moment for a club to join. I have a good defensive batting technique, but not that good on the attack, can bowl Leg/Off Spin or Medium Pace, and used to wicketkeep for my school.

Finally C'mon England! :D

Having studied at Leeds Uni, I actually feel sorry for you. Couldn't you find anywhere better to live?

...I hope you're in Brazil right now. My terrible, poisonous rage might not reach you there, though I'm projecting it now as we speak.

Where I live is along the Headingley Mile, but just enough off it that we don't get pissed students wandering past at all hours - all the (five traditional, about ten realistically) pubs/bars and none of the drunks; a prime crashing spot for all the friends after a night out. There's also two Thai restaurants, a Chinese, a Domino's, three curry houses, an Italian famous throughout the North and a Spanish tapas place within three minutes' walk.

If that's not enough, Otley Road is, I gather, the second busiest bus route in the country after somewhere in Manchester, and it shows: I have never had to wait more than six or seven minutes for a bus to go in town (and this is at a stretch; regularly the wait is two minutes or so), because everything that stops at the shopping parade shops goes exactly where I want it to. Nicely, my boyfriend also lives near a major bus route further out of Leeds than Headingley, meaning getting to his is a case of leaping onto one of three buses, two of which are scheduled at "Every 10 or less" and one of which arrives at 11, 31, 51.

If transport goes wrong or I need a nice long chat with someone, the centre of town is half an hour's walk away, and it's actually quite a nice walk, flattish (a hell of a lot more so than my Uni home of Durham).

But hey, within 90 seconds' walk there's two computer stores, a Blockbuster, a major supermarket, two off-licenses, more barbers than you could shake a pair of fancy scissors at and various sundry shops for various sundry purposes.

The funny thing is that overhead prices are rising, meaning shops keep going bust or relocating further out of town. Although this means the place looks like it's becoming derelict, it's actually getting some fairly big investment as the city centre expands northwards into Headingley.

Which is why Headingley is great. You bastard.

(;))

P.S. Oh! Yeah! It has a world-famous cricket ground!
