There is a big discussion in America about the usage of firearms for defence; Is this discussion centered in the legality of carrying firearms (if they can or cant have a gun), or in the registration of those firearms (being able to carry a weapon, if they need to register it to the goverment or not).

Most firearms legislation is at the State level, though the recently reversed 'assault rifle' ban was Federal.

Debate and proposed legislation usually is:

concealed carry of pistols in public
weapons ban by type (semi-auto, military style, scary looking or large caliber)
weapon ban by magazine capacity or physical construction
weapon ban by threat - i.e. penetrate armor vest, long-range
ammunition ban by various criteria
various baloney registration schemes for arms and ammo

By using several of the above in concert it is possible to eliminate the ownership of all firearms, but for such as single-shot shotguns and muzzleloaders. Effectively disarming the populace.

They've been trying to do this for years and it is very irritating. This is one of the primary purposes of the NRA - fighting these back door attempts to disarm us.

Different states have different regulations on firearms ownership and on the legality of carrying firearms. As a result the debate is different in each state.
