Apparently the Chinese know very little about sex. Makes me wonder how there can be so many of them.

That's exactly why. If they really know that little about sex, they probably haven't spent too much time thinking of how pregnancy and sex are related ;)

Well, they don't know about it, but they do it anyway. As shown by the old joke, "I have an awful son-in-law who doesn't know how to drink or play cards. Yet, although he can't drink, he does it anyway, and although he doesn't know how to play cards, he does it anyway." :D

The trick is that's there's not that many of them - it's all smoke and mirrors. Who can honestly say they've seen every single Chinese person in the same room at once? Nobody that's who....

Everybody knows communists reproduce asexually.
Go to China and stand near a busy square. If you watch for long enough, you will most likely see someone drop to the ground with convulsive shudders. This person will then drag themselves out of the way of the others. If you continue watching, a few minutes later two of them will appear, each half as tall as the original!

If you must imagine things in those terms.
Of course I like to think of China as a Corrupt Dictatorship with a "Frightening" economy... apologies to any Chinese here :p

Around year zero, China had 60 million people already... the same number of people as there were in the Roman empire (population estimate is for year 14 AD).
But then, their population trends went in a very different direction.
Population of the Roman empire went into a steep decline beginning with the 4th century, all the way through the first half of the Middle Ages... while the Chinese population was constantly going up, because they never went through major disruptions or destructions. Even the Mongol conquest wasn't so hard on Chinese cities. During the last 2000 years, the Chinese had time to organize their land, grow rice, create irrigation projects... and increase their population.
I think it's easy to explain by the continuous food production and efficient land use.
Look at the current populations.
China - 1,200 millions
Meditteranean countries (ex-Roman empire) - aound 700 millions
It isn't that bad, when we consider the number of invasions and the social & political fragmentation of Mediterranean countries.

I'll bet that they discovered cloning millenia ago. But its different from normal cloning, because it is done in an ancient and culturally signifigant/symbolic manner.
Or maybe, the Chinese are where the myths of faeries stealing children came from. At night, a specially selected cadre of elite Chinese Infant Acquirers (the CIA, for short) smuggle themselves throught the world, snatching children (in an ancient and ceremonial manner) and then modifying them (once again in an ancient and ceremonial manner) until they fit the bill as Chinese.

im telling you, its because the more kids they have the more they can send to the sweatshops.
if anyone has more than one child, population increase instantly becomes exponential. so it just keeps going up and up.

anyone heard of the one child policy in china?
This worked in the cities where it could be policed but outside of the cities in the rural areas, this policy did not work and therefore following the traditions and guidance set out by there ancestors, they had lots of children to help on the farm (no machinery remember) and therefore the population grew rapidly. Now that there is a trend for urbanisation and the rural --> urban migration the pop is growing even quicker with more and more people being 'found' or recorded.

Hasn't India become more populous than China recently?
Because the one child policy is working so well, India should follow, along with the rest of the world at some point.

The one child policy is only working in the urban areas. The majority of the population of china live in rural areas so in reality the one child policy does not really work.
Not sure about India, my last look at population size was that India had a pop of 600million and China just over a billion, however India is much much smaller than china in land mass, so the population density would be higher, maybe this is what you are referring to?

India is expected to overtake China in a few years at most. Mostly because of the Chinese one child policy -- which has also resulted in a lot of dead little girls and a very high percentage of males in the population who won't find wives because there simply aren't any.

The policy is working, just not as well as expected. Remember that China is still pretty much a totalitarian state and anyone can be a police. Still, it's not doing well and the barbarity it encourages makes it undesirable.

Ah, it's predicted to exceed China's population within the next 50 years. Holy crap, there'll be over 9 billion people in 2050?!?!?!? where are we gonna put everyone? At least some Western countries are predicting a decrease!

your last look must have been in the 80s
India crossed 1 billion last census , that was at 2001 , I beleive. Should be more than 1.1 billion now.
India is poised to overtake China around 2030 or thereabouts and reach 1.4 billion and stabilise from that point.
Population has already stabilised in many southern and northwestern states.
Little known fact : India has more (or atleast equal) arable land than China.
Hence population density maybe higher but population desity adjusted to arable land will be comparable (hey , nice unintended pun :D )
China's one child policy is a social disaster and hard it maybe to believe now, China is facing a demographic problem and is expected to "grey" ( higher non-productive age population compared to productive age population) before it become a developed country.

Highly likely that my look was on 80s data as that is all we have at school!!!
i completly agree with your post, your sense of geography and world affairs is very impressive, much more than can be said to some of the muppets that post on here thinking they know it all. A interesting read, which i am sure will help in some of my essays in the future!

British merchants sold Chinese workers opium hundreds of years ago. That's how they all got high. :)
