I think this guy was more of a genuine G8 protestor than a terrorist...
What's the atmosphere in Japan?

A little tense in the trains, but other than that, a little removed from the subject. But I'm in inaka (countryside) so... what's Osaka doing, Daistallia 2104?

I once walked into a US embassy untouched and walked around the main building until "I" stopped and asked someone for directions to a specific person. Then they asked how I got in without going through security. This was in a Arab country too. Was about as suprised as the person I was asking how I got in.

Much the same here, but I was in the southern suburbs today. My train home was having some sort of difficulty that the announcements didn't clarify (for those who aren't familiar, think of the stereotypical incomprehensible announcements in your own language - and try and catch them in a second language - :().
Marrakech II, I've done similar at the US consulate here. And to make matters worse, the consulate has only a couple of retired Japanese rent-a-cops as security. When I had to replace my stolen passport at the embassy in Tokyo back in '92, at least they had real security - I got a pat down after the metal detector from two USMC gaurds.
When I renewed my passport 2 years ago here, I waltzed though a group of Iraq war protesters and passes through a metal detector with both my Swiaa army knife and cell-phone no probs.
