Batman Begins (What did you think?) *SPOILERS*

I'm a huge Bat-fan, so you just know I'm gonna do this.
I watched it on it's second day. It kicked butt.
I have been a diehard fan of Batman 1989 for many years, but I gotta say this is better. This was the full and complete story of Batman and how he came to be. The theme's of the film itself were just awesome.
Ra's Al Ghul was portrayed extremly well, along with the Scarecrow. Many...many good lines in this movie. I loved the ending where it foreshadows for the Joker. I mean, have you ever seen anything like that before?
The plot was fantastically written, once again blowing away anything Shcumaker can think of, and NO GODDAMNED NEON SUITS!

Batman himself was very frightening, Christian Bale plays both Wayne and Batman very well, even changing his voice for both parts.

So, enough of me yakking, what did you all think?

Best film of the series and possibly the best comic book film made to this point, but I really hope they don't make another one. They will, of course--the cast has already signed on for it--but I'd rather be left to savor this one.

Hey, ya know I don't think Christopher Nolan is going to screw this up. He did too good of a job here to make a worse one after.

Oh man. I love batman. I have since I was about 4. The original two were earthshattering and groundbreaking for me when I was little, but the others fell flat. This just made me remember everything about how much I loved him. This movie was just awesome.

The sad thing is I know alot of people who actually LIKED the last two films. They sucked! Who the heck thought Batman could hide in the shdaows with a NEON BLUE SUIT! I mean...that's just blasphemy against the Batman name.
Thats one reason why I liked this so much, it was the best Batman film in a LONNNG time, and I think its just a little bit better than Burtons because it was way more in depth.
Plus, I love the one liners... :)

Best Batman film yet released. My only minor complaints were some clunky lines, the incoherent fight sequences and Katie Holmes.

What did you have against the fights? I loved the one on the docks because it only gave you glimpses of Batman, he was moving so fast. People don't realize how hard Bruce Wayne trained to be the fastest and most agile man alive. He is the pinacle of human strengths. Not just one strength, but combining them all to be the perfect mix.

People don't realize how hard Bruce Wayne trained to be the fastest and most agile man alive. He is the pinacle of human strengths. Not just one strength, but combining them all to be the perfect mix. You don't have to tell me, I'm a grand master of Batman Lore, but that's beside the point.

I can appreciate the sense of speed and mystery in his first fight at the docks, but there is no excuse for the atrocious editing and photography that continued on through every fight scene. It was annoying.

Part of what makes a Frank Astair musical so great is that the camera leans back and let's us watch a master at work, the same should apply to Batman. He is one of the world's foremost martial artists (Second only, perhaps, to Lady Shiva and Cassandra Cain), and we should be able to see that on the screen.

I think it was a poor stylistic decision influenced by the idiotic approach taken by "The Bourne Supremacy", where there was lots of action, but the audience never saw it because the editor and cameraman were both apparently hopped up on speed.

Hopefully this will be corrected in the sequals, along with the dialogue in places.

Yeah, I gotta give you that. The whole speed thing was sorta un-neccessary later on, like when he fought Ra's.
Seriously though, alot of the quotes were just awesome...
My favorites:
"He's here."
"Who?"
"The Bat-maannn."
____
"I never got a chance to thank you."
"And you'll never have to."
____
"I'll get my car."
"I brought mine."
"Yours?"
*Batman runs over a cop-car*
"I've got to get me one of those..."
____
"I'd like to borrow it...for...spelunking."
"Spelunking..."
"Yeah you know, cave diving?"
"You expecting to run into much gun-fire in these caves?"
____

And thats just a few. Seriously whoever wrote the lines, 90% of them were great. There were a few that seemed...out of place, but not many.

The script was primarily written by David S. Goyer, who's sort of a hit and miss guy in my book. He wrote the very good "Blade" and "Dark City", but he also did the less impressive "Blade 2" and directed the terrible "Blade 3".

I would say the lines worked more because of the quality of the actors themselves, rather than any inherent cleverness.

But I'm just being a nit-picky Film Student here. :p

Good. Though the fight scenes could have been better.

They could have hired a Hong Kong action director though. THe fight scenes play too much camera tricks that sometimes you don't know what the hell is going on.

Blade 3 = Set piece music video with a stupidly blatent advert for Ipods...

Oh and one thing about all the films (Blade 1 to 3 and Batman), the sword fights sucked. Not even close to being realistic.

I thought the Ras Al Ghul vs Bruce Wayne sword fight in the exploding temple was less realistic as it was impressive.

Rob Roy had awesome sword fights.

Yeah, when the vamps come to offer blade a truce, he has a sword fight there vs the daughter of the head vamp.

Rob Roy has possibly the most realistic sword fights of any major motion picture. Hence why they are brilliant and stuff like Kingdom of Heaven sucks...

But before I hijack this further, the rest of the film (Batman Begins) was really pretty good IMHO. Bale is turning into a very versitile and decent actor.

Yeah, when the vamps come to offer blade a truce, he has a sword fight there vs the daughter of the head vamp. Oh yes, I had forgotten the infamous "Tekken Fight". There was some really dodgy cgi work done there, I was struck wondering where the start button was. :p

The movie was great, indeed. The only thing that's gonna be a little tricky is that the super-villains from all the other movies really kicked ass. It's gonna be hard to top that...

Looking forward to another one!

What I really liked was Ras' a' guls death. No long drawn out "Noooooooooo" or the sound of him wetting himself. Just closed his eyes. Pretty cool.

Yeah that one...such a joke...at least Cat from Red Dwarf was in it...saved that movie for me!

I liked it. It was darker, as it should be. Batman is a dark, brooding character.

I agree on the fight scenes-way too much movement flashing-a little more confusing than awesome.

Looking foward to the next one...and who will play the Joker?

With the exception of the Bat-tank, I thought everything else was 100% spot on. I like that they dealt with Raz al Ghul, one of the more interesting oppoents, and the Scarecrow was well done as well.

I thought the casting was superb and like the tease for the next movie's likely villain -- I was never satisfied by Burton's treatment of the Joker.

And don't count Raz out -- he IS immortal, after all.

The best thing about the movie is it answers the question, "Where does he get such wonderful toys?"

I love that line.

And I liked Morgan Freeman in this movie. He has that "knowing grin" perfected.

Are you interested in "The Fantatsic Four"? Its opening today and I plan to take my boys to see it as its a rainy cranky day here.

Gotta love that bat mobile.
No flimsy tail fins and gay blue neon inside the hub caps (that don't spin)

I loved the Car chase! although I really don't know much about the expanded universe, just a choice few of the villains, the joker, and so on. I'd never even heard of Raz al Ghul til I seen the movie, which I thought was awesome all round. Especially since it has Liam neeson in it.

Al Ghul was in the animated series, he only had like 2 or 3 episodes and they were all linked together, batman finally managed to kick his ass by imploding the chamber of eternal youth or wth ever. Not the best enemy though, scarecrow is a fun enemy, and whatever happened to the hatter from teh animated series, he wasn't bad either.

I thoguht the fact that he was loaded and owns his own company that makes things was a good indication..

Oh, I'm so glad they didn't hire a Hong Kong action director, and that Nolan didn't resort to that Matrix/slo-mo fight stuff either. One of Batman's greatest strengths as a character, in my opinion, is his lack of an extranormal power--the fight sequences as filmed looked so much more real and human than anything that comes out of those other traditions, and they helped make the film as great as it was.

With the exception of the Bat-tank Personally, I thought that was a wise decision, as it made both logical sense, and was an awesome reference to the Bat-Tank from Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel.

This is Batman Begins, where Bruce Wayne is still learning the ropes, gathering what he needs, refining, honing and constructing. We can consider this Batmobile an early design that will become sleeker and more efficient as the Bat continues his defence of Gotham.

All very good comments. I'm glad everyone enjoyed the movie, I know I really did. Seriously, after seeing a movie like that...you feel...like you have a new take on life. You don't go home and squabble, or whine as much on that day, because you've seen better.
It's kinda hard to describe but I think you get the pic.

Anyways, yes, the whole tease for the Joker was awesome, and I'm hoping they bring Ra's back. They just did much better in this movie, Morgan Freeman did Lucious Fox justice and the Scarecrow was perfect. If Nolan keeps on like this, I think every movie he makes will be good, because everything was almost perfect.

Wow, was I the only one who didn't like it?? I haven't seen the other batman movies but I felt this one dragged on too long and all of the fight sequences got tiresome after a while. Also, I just found that city in the movie so...depressing. Hmm, I don't know. Maybe I missed something.

The biggest downfall of the movie was Holmes as assistant DA. Too young to have been in that position. Would have been better to have her move into the ADA position after an original uncorrupt DA was killed by Marconi. He would have then been replaced by the DA in the movie.
