What is the greatest band of all time?

There is no greatest because it depends on the type of music you preffer. For my musical tastes Black Sabbath is the greatest. I like metal and it is nearly impossible to listen to a heavy metal song without hearing some black sabbath influence in the music. Its like they invented every hook, every riff, every sound that constitutes metal and everyone else has simply been rearranging them since then. That's not to say that people havent made improvements to those classic sounds throughout the years, but the base still remains the same.

Since "greatest" is a very subjective thing, I think what would be a better gauge is to ask who has had the most influence on other artists. The Beatles would probably win by default, with Led Zeppelin coming in a close second.

That's like asking for the greatest film of all time. You can list some of your personal favorites, but even then there are so many which are so good.

I'm into rock music, so I'd have to go with the traditional rock choices Led Zep, Floyd, Hendrix etc.

The most influential would have to be The Clash, because not only did they make millions off their music, so did Rancid. Most awesome would be Choking Victim, because songs about scabies are awesome. Without my 'bias' towards 'punk' I'd say Anthrax or Type O Negative.

I'll have to argue that. The Sex Pistols influenced many more, and not just in the Punk Rock genre. They influenced so many that you could say they influenced "everyone and his brother". Why do you think The Clash started? It was because of the Sex Pistols.

About a "greatest band of all time"... No. There isn't one that stands out as the "best" or "greatest".

Iron Maiden has to be mentioned. \m/\m/

Iron Maiden rule, but only with Bruce. Paul Di'anno and Blaze Bayley both sucked as vocalists, especially Di'anno.

That happened to a lot of great bands; they lost a key member and went downhill (yes, I know Paul predated Bruce, but you get the point). It happened to Black Sabbath, too.

Still, I'd vote Iron Maiden. "Piece of Mind">>Everything.

I say this because I believe music ought to be art rather than mere entertainment-something that can get you thinking and move you to change, to reject what is screwed up in society and do whatever it takes to become human.
How does Tool get this then?

System of a Down does a significantly better job of getting you thinking and moving you to change, to reject what is screwed up society and do whatever it takes to become human...or whatever.

Don't get me wrong, Tool is deep. But to me, it seems to be a lot more on a personal level, whereas System of a Down (and I could name some others) is more on a societal level.

Nine Inch Nails has some of both.

But I'm not submitting any band for "the best," because I don't know if I believe in the concept of having a single "best" band ever.

* System Of A Down, they manage to be beautiful and brutal, the very definition of experimentation in music.

* Lamb of God for sheer technical ability. Unbelievably skilled.

* Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Doors for their influnce in the music scene.

* The Hives. They're not overly special in the music department but I've never seen a more entertaining act live

* Rage Against The Machine. They just rocked hard.

I *totally* agree. For me, the only other group that has come close is Mudhoney. But the Hives blew me away and I walked away an instant fan.

Hm. Can't say i'm a fan of that. Neon Ballroom (minus Anthem for the Year 2000, which sucks) is their best IMO...then maybe a couple from Freak Show. I haven't heard either in years, though.

Tough, certainly the old bands are way better than the modern ones in my opinion.

It is dificult to name one so i will name a few:

Metallica
Queen
Pink Floyd
SOAD ( a refreshing new and original band)
Pantera
Guns N Roses

The band that has most influenced modern day metal, is probs Metallica and GnR with perhaps a hint of Pantera? So i think there needs to be a combination of bands to make the greatest!

Of course, my favourite is Metallica, but the 80s and 90s stuff, St Anger is shocking.

Agreed I would add Tool and Deftones to the list...I think the topic should be "most influential" as "best" is totally subjective and impossible to determine, but a list of influential bands can have quantified properties.

And how can one forget Robert Johnson? He started blues guitar, which led to rock which led to other genres. Pearl Jam was also revolutionary at the time, same influence as Nirvana. SRV took a lot of influence from Jimi, but many more, like Kenny Wayne Shepherd took influence from SRV. Still too hard to determine most influencial!

EDIT: and Derek and the Dominoes/Cream/Disraeli Gears etc...

Still too hard to determine most influencial!
hmm...don't know about deftones, but I haven't listened to them much. Tool, definatly. I was tempted to list people like Louis Armstrong because lets face it, he had more influence on rock than probably any rock musician (along witht he other jazz greats). Robert Johnson is a god. 'nuff said. And I don;t know how I forgot Pearl Jam. I was listening to Given to Fly as I was writing up my list.

There are so many greats. I think its fun to try and figure out who will be added to that list.

I completely agree. Although I would probably add Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden to that list.

What a subjective topic this is. It's really only good for belittling the tastes of others... but since I'm here...

The White Stripes
The Hives
The Who
The Doors
The Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd

The Pink Floyd... no, doesn't sound right at all.

Musical tastes are subjective.

Deciding who was the most influencial, successful, and most groundbreaking artists, thus making them the "greatest" band...isnt.

The Beatles.

No contest.

It cannot be sanely argued that any other group or solo artist made such an impact on the music scene, or had such success, or changed their own genre of music as profoundly as the Beatles did.

Not even Elvis, or The Stones.

Heavy distortion..

Concept albums..

Looping effects...

Not touring to support the recent albums...

Starting your own label..

They did it first.

Hey, since we're on the subject of great bands, can I just ask what is this big prejudice aginst the Dresden Dolls? Amanda palmer is one of the best pianists ever, even better than Something Corporate's Andrew McMahon, yet people say she is crap and that her singing voice is totally sad and that she is ugly (flabby and hairy were the words, I believe) so why does she flaunt her body, etc.. At least she has the confidence to go up on stage in her stage make-up and lingerie and do what she does. Her singing style is unique, she can play the piano to hell and back and yet people diss her all the time. They never diss Brian, so why does Amanda have to put up with all that crap? All those cowards who insult her should know she doesn't take it to heart, and good on her.

I think Iron Maiden is overrated. I mean I respect them a lot for what they have done over the years, and sure, I even understand why they are so popular. But look at the songs, it's the same things over and over. Any decent heavy metal guitarist could play along their new cd because it contains so easily predictable melody lines. But as I said there's an audience for this stuff as well so no complaints there, keep it up.

If you read that carefully you will notice that I didn't say that.
I think there is nothing wrong with the abilities of mr. Murray & co. It's just that their songs tend to be quite stuck to the same basic formula they once found useful.

Simply put? The Faces - Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagen, and a couple of other cats. And they were produced by Glyn Johns.

I mean, haven't any of you of the quote/unquote "younger set" heard of "Cindy Incidentally", "Ooh La La", "Stay With Me", and shirley you remember "Stay With Me"... Heck, The Faces, The Stones, The Beatles, The Dead and The Airplane formed a large foundation on which modern rock and roll today. And you should know by now that nothing cannot be built on the ground without a strong foundation...

If you don't believe me, ask your dads. Even your moms. I bet a large percentage of them had crushes on Rod Stewart... and I might go so far to say that several have you were conceived to "Someone Like You" or "Reason To Believe"...

As a big Maiden fan I have to agree that their more recent stuff isn't as good as their older stuff.

well, in the 80's, Metallica was at least as influential. Look at their albums from that era - I mean they had so many killer riffs that they didn't know where to put them. They then ended up using about eight of them in the same song, which made the albums very fresh, innovative and even progressive, in a sense.

Bruce is definitely the best vocalist Maiden has had. I didn't think Paul was that bad though. He was a different sound but he wasn't horrible. Not so good live though.

Blaze was the worst IMO. After seeing a few tracks from X-Factor and Virtual XI, I almost had to rip my ears off. He's crap.

Kraftwerk, anyone?

The Beatles were influential and whatnot, but they were simply innovating on a style that was already a decade old. And most of their innovations were applying to rock'n'roll/ pop music things that had been done before, ie. tape manipulation, synthesizers, orchestral arrangements, sitars, etc. Kraftwerk's style of electronic pop was completely unprecedented. Without Kraftwerk, there would be no Techno, Electro, House, Trance, Synth-Pop, Industrial, Hip-Hop, IDM, Glitch, etc.
