4th of July-For Americans, a celebration of the birth of the nation, freedom and independence, and all that crap. Also, in my family, an obligatory family holiday. So, we invite some family members over. Five. All five are from one of the richest suburbs in the area. They are all caucasion. They are all Christian. Two conversations were brought up that showed racism and bigotry. This is not an exaggeration.

First conversation topic: Relative #1 on the jury of a local case. Here is an exact quote from the conversation:
Relative #1: She was on tape pawning the jewlery off.
Relative #2: What color was she?
Relative #1: You know what color she was. I just couldn't let someone like that go, she'd probably just do something else.

Second conversation topic: Tax increase due to the reconstruction of the local middle school. An exact quote:
Relative #2: Well, they were getting too many kids coming through, they said they had to expand.
Relative #3: It's those damn Mexicans.

You can thank my family for reinforcing the rich white bigotted Alabama stereotype so strongly.

I say other on the poll - It needs a better plot, its not solid enough for me. What if relative 1 was having an affair with relative 3, but relative 2 doesnt know about it? Then you can have the jewellry thief as a character later on when the reader is bored.

It was obvious that the defendant was guilty. There was videographic evidence There shouldn't have been any need to mention race in the first place. Relative #1 also happens to be the most rabid Christian extremist in the family, and the most uptight. He sings in a local choir and crap.

I lived in the south (albeit not Alabama) for several years, and during that time I had one friend whose job it was to follow black customers around a franchise of a major store chain and make sure they didn't steal anything.

I'm not kidding, that was his job.

Why did they have to do that: BECAUSE THEY LIKE BUILDING SCHOOLS. NO shit, not only do they just like building a new school every 5 years but the neighborhoods around here are EXPLODING with stupid white people like those, WHITE people, NOT mexicans and they have to go SOMEWHERE and seeing how the districts are drawn by stupid blind people, alot of kids end up going to the same school.

But seriously, I thank a death for rational my views on the issues in life. It made me question everything, and find my own answers-not the common ones, or the accepted ones. I can now accept that prejudice exists within my friends and family because they simply don't know any better; it's the way they have been taught. They have never had to analyze and question every aspect of their existance, which is a good thing for them. Sometimes the conclusions are far too much for a person to handle. When I hear racist and biggoted remarks, I try not to let it confuse and hurt me as much as it did when I was younger. Yet, all the hate surrounds me, and, sometimes, nearly suffocates me.

Honestly, no one seems to realise the only reason people go into houses with guns is because the owner might have one too. Dont get nearly as much gun crime in good ol' sunny England. We dont let anyone shoot much anymore either...but I think chavs should be the exception.

Well in my experience the south is changing, Everyknowledge is but one example. Though I dont know much about Alabama, other than its pretty in places, I have lived most of my life between Arkansas and Louisana,(Little Rock, New Orleans, and out in the boonies), and I've come across many enlightned people that come from horribly close minded environments. Hell the Ozarks are overrun with hippies,(especially Eureka Springs, cool town you should check it out :) they outlawed helicopters from overflying the area under the guise that the noise would hurt tourism but it was really so they could grow bud lol.) :D Anyways, I'm proud to be from my region of the south.
