Islam- against violence?

I don't understand how groups such as Al-Quaeda can call themselves Muslims. In school we have been taught that Islam is against violence, but over the past few years we can see how many of these cold-blooded killings have been done in the name of Allah.

I know these people are fanatics, but can someone let me know exactly how they justify this behaviour?

P.S. I'm not saying that horrific crimes haven't been comitted in the name of other religions, by the way.

They believe they are doing gods work, therefore they have to go outside the conventional rules. Like we did in the crusades

They have the right to call them selves whatever they want. Does it make it true? No. Besides, everygroup has a crazy group that makes them look bad. For Islam it's Al Quaeda. For Christians, it's Fundies. For geeks, it's script-kiddies and a few LARPers.

maybe, they're using Islam as an excuse. Like religion gives them a right to do something radical.

It's just like those who blow up abortion clinics and call themselves Christians. No difference.

There are schools of muslim legal theory and theology that justify such behavior. Most muslims don't want to blow shit up, but some have been indoctrinated into violent forms of Islam and would love to blow up those that they see as enemies of god.

what are fundies?
F--ing undies.

No, really. It's a Christian sect. The term "fundie" is used also for any radical Christian. The term "fundaments" means buttcheeks, so that's a good description from where they're pulling their justifications from.

short for fundamentalists.

not quite.

for me, fundie = one true way-ism. The 'do it ONLY my way or go to hell' philosophy.

not all fundamentalists are fundies. As long as they realize that others have a RIGHT to their own opionion, and can do the "support your right to say what you will, and will fight to protect your 'right to say' but respectfully disagree...' they are not fundies.
