Besides, they are the biggest European car manufacturer, also owning Audi (German), Seat (Spanish), Skoda (Czech), Bugatti (Italian), Bentley (English).

I like Volkswagen and would almost always chose their cars over any others!

But Bus' are cool, right? At least mine is :)

Porsche has indeed won a championship in F1 in a 'sorta' way-they where the engine supplier for I believe McLaren with Senna.

The first Porsche sold to a private citizen was raced the next weekend and won. They've been winning since introduction. 17 Le Mans, the next highest is Ferarri with 9. Paris-Dakar with the dominant 959s.

Porsche is really where it is at.

Mercedes must be the best, considering that their reputation dates back before the Nazis.

Despite the Chinese market being dominated by locally produced Volkswagens (more German cars are being built in China than in Germany), the Chinese would easily pick Benz or BMW for class.

What the hell happened to those East German car makers? I heard that all they produced were clones of Soviet models.

I dunno, Kombis, Beetles, they're much of a muchness. Just not my cup of tea.

I wholeheartedly agree about the Porsches though. Their racing programme improves their road cars, which in turn feeds back into their racing programme. It's like a vicious circle, but good. :)

So does BMW (at least as engine makers) and Audi (as Auto Union). Ferry was an engineer before making the VW and the Porsches. Diamler Benz goes allllll the way back to the first cars, but I still gotta go with Porsche. (though the 57 300SL Gullwing is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.)

VWs are still second class like the Opels, they just don't have the reputation for luxury and class like Mercedes and BMW. Rich people in China don't drive around in their Santana 2000s. I've seen pictures, has the car been released yet? Cayman is the name I heard.

I wonder if they could squeeze the GT3, or even GT2 engine into a Cayman racing variant? That would be something to think about.

I don't think it's a performance issue, but I think the fuel consumption of the GT2 at full noise is too great for them to rund with the Astons, etc (I may be wrong here).

Definitely they should spec up the Carrera to LMP, I mean that was the point of the car in the first place. I'd love to see how it would go.

I just want a race at the front of the field, something we haven't had since the heady days of GT1, and even then it was still pretty close to a CLK-GTR lovefest...though with the Penske/Porsche LMP2 I think we might see a LMP2 take overall...(true fan, you see).

On the Porsche website they compare the Cayman S to the 64 904 GTS. That tugs at me a bit, I love that car. I would hope that the shape was closer-but I loved the 904 highlight reel they put up.

I think the cafe that I'm sapping internet from is getting ansy, so I should motor...and pretend I'm in my own 904...(an illusion quickly trampled in my bus...)
Leonstein

I think the Cayman is a pretty good addition:
a) There is only an "S" - no standard soggy version here.
b) It's cheaper than the 911.
c) It's positioned as a hardcore driver's car to get prestige buyers not to move down from the 911.
d) It lapped the Nordschleife faster than the 997 Carrera S apparently...

What the hell happened to those East German car makers? I heard that all they produced were clones of Soviet models.
They build models which could compete with models from the early 60s. Volkswagen cooperated with Sachsenring and there were a couple of Trabis with a Polo motor produced in the early 90s.
The monetary reform happened and the money that would've bought you a Trabi could buy you a 3 year old 2nd hand "real" car from West-Germany.
Sachsenring had their own design made out of fiberglass, so did Wartburg, but they used sheet iron.

While you're at it - wouldn't it be better to point at the Veyron? Turned out the W12 didn't sell very well. No one wanted to spend hundreds of Ks on a VW.
So now they build the "Bugatti" Veyron...

Gee, I always thought the W12 was only considered a concept car which eventually broke a whole bunch of world records. I didn't even know they were sold regularly?

It's said that there is an unoffical autobahn hierarchy:

Porsche
Mercedes
BMW
Audi
Volkswagen
Sachsenring

I got a feeling German Nightmare's not going to like this... ;)

Ah, well, that's okay with me. As long as I don't have those others tailgating me I'm fine.
Fastest I ever went in a Volkswagen Polo (http://www.catalog.auto.ru/images/17ec6349.jpg) was 197km/h downhill with tailwind and a warm-up distance of several kilometers fueled by 100 premium... I could feel every single little bump on the road. Actually kinda scary 'cause a Polo doesn't really have much of a deformable zone with that kind of speed.

Oh dear god.. a polo doing over 120mph!!! Your crazy! lol!

German cars are great, the Mercedes McLaren SLR is a masterpiece of Anglo/German engineering and just an incredible car. BUT and here is the big but, nothing can beat the sleakness of the Aston Martin DB9, the Aston has something that German or any other make of car just cannot get, it has class, a presence, beauty. An amazing car, which i can vouch does 160mph no problems (ironically on a German autobahn!).

Auf der Autobahn?

I got my Peugeot 306 over 200kmh on the open highways in the Northern Territory. That was a hoot. Felt pretty stable too.

Auf der Autobahn?
Yup. To quote Kraftwerk on this topic: Fahr'n, fahr'n, fahr'n auf der Autobahn!
Haven't gone beyond 180/185km/h lately. Way too much traffic. And you know how those people are: They pull in front of you when you need it the least... And the premium costs way more. That personal speed record (stunt?) was done about 2 years ago :D
