I can't beleive the Kansas Legislature is willing to close down all the schools in the state just for some cash, some Casinos and an Arena

Seriously

students might not have a school to go back to after the summer if these idiot politicians have their way

Well, to get rid of the schools would be irresponsible. The government has the duty to teach our students the necessary skills that they need to succeed.

Well that may be true but Kansas has to have something in order to get the money. Unless they export religiousness or something.

Actually the Kansas Legislature is not willing to shut down the schools for cash, Casinos and Arena or anything else. It is the Supreme Court of Kansas that is willing to shut down the schools if the Legislature doesn't come up with the amount of money that a single consultant decided was appropriate despite the fact that Kansas already pays one of the highest amounts per student, per capita in the United States.
The fact of the matter is that they and the State Attorney have already arranged to provide financing for the first 6 months of the next year even if the Supreme Court does freeze the distribution to the school districts.
This entire case is nothing more than the state supreme court attempting to usurp the legislative powers (financing eductation) from elected representatives. They have completely overstepped their authority according to the constitution. Since there is no way to get it to the US supreme court it is just another test of will that we will have to watch play out. It used to happen every few years on other issues, however it has been a long time since anyone has tried it.

But everything that's happening here isn't under the control of Sebelius. That's right, hi, I'm Kansan....you're all pretty poorly informed, comparitively, at least judging by what we're being told. And it's not like Sebelius was just randomly one day like "ooooh, shut down the schools, that sounds like it's good for a few kicks". Our schools are getting royally screwed, same as the Missouri side of the Kansas City region. Furthermore, they're not actually going to shut down our schools. That would go directly against the laws already set forth that children must have education provided to them; in my opinion, an opinion widely shared, it's simply a threat by the Court to get the legislature's asses in gear. And so far it's working, so kudos to them.

Really, why don't we research a little bit before being like this?

I see no reason why it can't be taken to the US Supreme Court.

I listened to a couple of attorneys talking about why it would be next to impossible but didn't really see their legal logic. The bottom line they both agreed on was under the circumstances about the only way they could get it into there would be if they were to actually shut down the schools.
This is a very unusual state when it comes to politics. When one hears of corruption and power games among them they think of places like California, New York etc. The truth is, those folks know nothing about corruption. Kansas is literally owned and operated by a couple of corporations and the insurance industry. Our politicians are all but appointed by them. We even have a corporation who's main business is the buying and selling of politicians. (Koch industries)

The US Supreme Court potentially could straighten things out.

Ah well, nice to meet you. Right down the street. I met another once but being a conservative and an american here, your life expectency is rather short. How'd you like that little addition to the order that said we cannot add funding to our own school district on top of the state funds! Is that sick or what?

Well, being a recent SME alumna, I don't know exactly how to go into this issue to begin with -- in the next 10 years or less, the Shawnee Mission District wants to shut down East anyway. This news, riding swiftly on the back of my own school (and the IB pull as well as the main Special Education program for the area) being shut down rather muted my response. However, if the Districts WERE allowed to seek funding from the students and their families, at least the Johnson County schools would still be in business, as well as probably a good deal of Sedgwick County (around Wichita, Park City (BTK PRIDE), Derby, etc) and maybe a few of the Lawrence schools....

I know what you mean it is a tough one and the biggest problem is trying to figure out who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing an increase in addition to the additional 148 million they added, but the con artists in Wyandotte County have left a bad taste in my mouth for too many years, and I really smell a rat in all this.
Now that the legislature has decided to esclate things by pushing for an amendment to limit judicial powers, maybe someone will find a way to work out an equitable deal. Although, with past experiences in dealing with the State Supreme Courts god syndrome, I have to admit, I would love to see their wings clipped a bit.

Goddard has some of the best schools in Sedwick County (Maize would like to argue that point, of course it is Baised since I'm from Goddard, we were however in the top 7)

I apologize, I don't know the politics behind the Sedg system very well. I went to school last year at WSU before transferring back home to UMKC for the rest of college, so that's my limited experience. As a matter of fact, I probably only know where the hell Derby is because for our sorority we did some community service out there.

I think Wyandotte's actually been winning out the past few years. However, I'm willing to forgive them recently, because it was because of the loose WyCo laws that I was able to patriotically blow a large chunk out of America this past 4th....too bad it's not allowed in Johnson, I really hate taking 635 home through the smoke cloud at midnight.

Well congratulations, I know that was fun. Actually if memory serves me correctly the only problem with the 4th in Wyandotte county was knowing the difference between the fireworks and firearms. (used to live there long ago!) In fact my old house was just torn down in the latest rebuilding of 635. Fortunately for me I live right by the Milburn Country Club, so I had front row seats to their display, complete with smoke cloud right in my own front yard. :D

Lots of rappers live in ATL.

True but we also have alot of country singers from GA. Rap isn't the problem the problem is that GA can't evolve past a backward state like Mississippi. They elected a Repub Gov. To bring back the old confederate flag and then later got pissed off when the Gov. decided not to put the flag in the election because major corporations said they would leave GA if they did and trust me GA isn't a graet state for jobs unless u like working for minimum wage.

We need to implent a new system that allows people to go from Pre-K to undergraduate education and provide jobs for these people!!!
