Rise of Nations

Recently acquired the game. What does the NS community think of the game? What should I do with it?

I tried conquering the world with the Russians. Eh, I lost interest because of having to wait 15 minutes for defending, and having to build up an army for 30 minutes everytime I wanted to capture a territory.

That expansion pack looks sexy.

I haven't played it, but isn't that game meant to be RTS?

Anyway, I've recently acquired Generals.

RoN was GOOD - especially the graphics...

I've created scenarios for World War II European and Pacific theatres, and the Roman Empire, and of course conquered the world with the Chinese....lol.

It’s alright. I’m not a big fan of RTSs, though. I guess it is one of the better ones.

...I suppose it's nice for killing time.

I played it and it was OK but I expected it to be better and was disappointed. I would suggest Victoria, Hearts of Iron, or Europa Universalis 2 instead.

It's excellent, although I haven't played it in a while.

Multiplayer was great, although Gamespy is always a bitch.

Mmm, I remember getting in long debates over at Rise of Nations Heaven over whether or not the US should be included as a nation. Good times. Now I feel nostalgic, and might have to go play it again.

Should I feel bad? I kinda do...

But the U.S. shouldn't be included. Much as I love the U.S., we weren't really around in the classical age.

I have played rise of nations quite a bit. I quite like it but I dont really play that many games so i dont have much to compare it with. The expansion pack does make it for more challenging gameplay and the historical scenarios are quite good.

Meh, I really couldn't care either way. I usually argued for them though. Probably because I was more nationalistic way back then (what was that, a year, two years ago now?).

Ah, and there were good rushing v no rushing arguments. Those were a lot of fun too.

I concur. Paradox=the best. :)

Rise of Nations is the only game that has successfuly, in my mind, done what I really wanted to do with Civilization:

Make it RTS.

Bwhaha!

...the only other game that is remotely like that is Empire Earth, to which I go BLEH.

The fantasy Rise of Kingdoms looks to be okay, but they went stupid with the demo ;_;

As for Paradox's stuff... hell yeah. Its good, but at times a bit too slow.

Brilliant game, better than any other game of that type. w00t for RoN.

Great game, the only thing I can really complain about is that you have to rebuild your army EVERY SINGLE territory you want to capture. To that end I personally feel the Total War games are superior. Even so, the whole conquer the world through every time period was down right awesome.

They could have Native Americans. LOL!

The game is shit, it won't work, as soon as I get my new computer, if it works on that, the game will be awsome, until that point, its crap!

Thrones and Patriots has the Lakota and the Iroquois, along with the Americans (who are incredibly good, almost as much as the English or Germans) and the Dutch as new civs. I don't know if the Inca were in the original or are only in the new one. It also adds a cool Cold War CTW campaign.

Hmm, is it just me or are the Romans only good once you get the unique Heavy barrack units? That's a pity...

The Inca were in the original.

The original had the Maya, the Incas, and the Aztecs alone in the Americas.

I never ended up getting T&P.

I must be the only person who was extremely disappointed with this game. I found the animation to be far too crude for something that took so long to make, the "click" and "woosh" sounds units made instead of spoken dialogue was very annoying, the civilizations were too identical to each other (from the previews, I was expecting diverse, unique civilizations like those on Empires: Dawn of the Modern World), and the gameplay felt bland.

I played one random map... And, if I didn't have the will to force myself to complete it, I would've quickly turned it off and gone to bed (it was only 3:30 PM --- that'll tell you how boring it was).

I loved the original game and the expansion only made it better in my eyes. I personally adore the Cold War conquer the world scenarios. But if you don't like waiting so long to conquer your enemies in the CTW game, it might not be the best game for you. I was able to play it for hours though...
