Metallica vs. Megadeth

Okay, at the sad expense of this possibly turning into a horrifying fight, I will ask, which do you prefer. Metallica or Megadeth? Why?

I am a Megadeth fan, though I like Metallica's albums up through Load. They went downhill with Load. I don't mind if a metal band goes mainstream for a few albums like most people seem to.

I prefer Megadeth because I like Mustaine's personality and guitarplaying better. Too bad the Gigantour isn't coming anywhere near here. :(

As a former basse player, I liked both.

Megadeth for pure fun playing fast and kicking in the air (because it's not too complicated). Also you can play and drink at the same time in "Symphony for destruction" and other songs, it's 0-0-0-0-0 half of the times.

And Metallica for the subtle basse play in some of their earlier works. But you need to stretch the fingers.

I liked Metallica up to and including the Black album, but I like the idea of Dave Mustane getting kicked out of the band and then coming back with an "in your face" band like Megadeth.

I'm a Metallica fan; Megadeath is just too heavy for my palette.

I'm not really fond of either.
In fact, i hate what metallicaa has become - some kinda monster indeed. A self-righteous monster, that apparently, enjoys sucking. Oh and making crappy, unoriginal music :D

I fear, megadeth is just a bit too corny for my tastes. especially some of thier mid 90's stuff...it's pretty cheesy if you ask me.

That's not to say, that I don't ever rock out when one of either of thier older songs come on at a party or on the radio - but on the whole, i' don't really like either of them..

This more applies to megadeth fans - there is a band that is based near my home city, called "mastodon" that you may or may not like. pretty rockin' stuff.
I think they have a video on thier website somewhere, but i can't remember the url so eff'in google it.

As for megadeth being corny - i guess i'm a bit of a hipocrite - mastodon's last album was a concempt album about moby dick...

but it still manages to blow your ass outta your chair.

Both. Dave Mustaine is the best guitarist I've ever seen. And as long as I pretend that Metallica died in 1995, they're freakin awesome. I learned to play guitar emulating them.

It's sad to hear that middle-aged guy who can't sing pretend he's James in that Metallica tribute band. I think they're called 'Metallica' too, but it's written in a different font. If they only had a better singer, they could fool me.

Of these two, I pick Megadeth. I never did really like their stuff, but when they went full corporate pig during the Napster mess, then after the black album... Makes me think this guy has the right idea: :mp5:

Megadeth, as long as Dave stays out of Politics, we're fine. His last album blew chunks, for me.

Metallica...

...simply caus Megadeath could never write a 'Master of Puppets' or 'Ride the Lightning'...

...granted Metallica went south recording wise with Load (apart from Fuel, simple but good song). Live, they still put on a damned decent show.

yay a decent thread! :D

i've seen em both live, and they both kick major ass, musically. but for stage presence, excitement and sheer power Metallica rule the live show for me.

but for albums, i'm divided. on the one hand metallica is more "easy listening", easier on the ear, easier to get into; wheras megadeth is a fury of awesome riffs that often spins me out when i'm toasted :p
metallica's music is more technically proficient - as a band. megadave may be an awesome guitarist, but the music, songs and structure of metallica just fit together better to make the songs easier to listen to, and, in a way, better.

that said megadeth have some fantastic numbers in their repatoir (Holy Wars springs to mind first) that totally redeem them; and when you have a choice of the two and you want the more aggressive choice, you go for megadeth - there's just more attitude to megadave.
unfortunatley it swings back towards metallica when you consider (pretty much) every single song on their albums before, and including the black album (metallica) are masterpieces. fuck em afterwards - they really do suck after the black album.

so overall i'd have to say metallica have more going for them when i think about it (sorry this is a rant but the number of times i've had this arguement with flatmates  )
however i enjoy listening to them both pretty much equally, so i voted equal :)

I have to say Metallica. While Megadeth is better per capita, Metallica is better overall. Metallica has the best albums from the two, but also the worst ones. (Yes, Risk is bad, but nowhere near as bad as Reload.)

Too bad the Gigantour isn't coming anywhere near here. :(Wow, where do you live? Things often don't come here but that ones is. I'm not sure if I'll go, though, I'm not fond of the venue.

I live in North Carolina. Closest the Gigantour is coming is Atlanta and Reading, Pennsylvania.

Oh, wow, that's pretty bad. I get upset when tours come to Cleveland but not here, and it's only about 4 hours away.

In the "Ride the Lightning"/"Master of Puppets" stage, I would have answered Metallica...

But then Metallica became the washed up, sold out POC they are today, and I have to answer Megadeth.

Metallica's slide was steady and ugly, though their concerts still sound like the old stuff no matter what they're playing.

Queensyche, OTOH, just went to total crap. Like Dave, Geoff Tate needs to keep his opinions to himself and just sing.

And the music industry still doesn't like this genre... But ask them and they'll tell you how it's all those downloaders killing their business instead of the crap they turn out as "music".

I would have to say Megadeth because even today "Hangar 18" and "In my Darkest Hour" sound great. I don't care for either band's new stuff but Metallica is almost bad in a cartoonish way now.
