General info on fair use

A lot of us, myself included, post articles or sections of articles from news sources or other resources to start discussions or to lend credence to our points of view. I don't know if anyone else has ever done this on this forum, but what the hell--we could always use a reminder or two at times.

Forgive me if this is covered elsewhere and feel to ignore it if it is.

Fair use rules basically allow people to quote copyrighted work from other sources as long as two basic rules are followed: 1. You have to credit the original source and 2. you can't quote the article in its entirety, i.e. you can't reproduce it without permission. You can quote extended selections, but as a general rule, I wouldn't excerpt more than 50% of any article without adding generously to the content in terms of your own work.

The reason I bring this up is because there have been some news sources recently who have taken exception to critical work done by bloggers and who have demanded that they take down some of their work because they didn't receive permission to reproduce work. The bloggers have fired back with fair use arguments, and in the cases I've seen, have had reason. It's instructive to note that in those cases, the newspapers in question have backed down because only excerpts were used, although in one case they were lengthy.

I just don't want to see this site get tagged for any unnecessary legal issues for failure to follow fair use copyright law and have the forum administrators decide to disallow what is a useful tool in our discussions.

Feel free to do what you will with the rest of this thread. :D
