What do you think of Oklahoma?

I was just readin' on the "If you could get rid of a state?" thread. I noticed that just about nobody said anything about Oklahoma. It was generally either Texas or California that people wanted to boot out of the union.

So that got me to thinkin'; what do people think of Oklahoma? I know we're picked on on TV sometimes, but other than that, I really don't know what y'all think of us.

So, tell me.

I don't have any personal issues w/ Oklahoma. In fact, my favorite teacher of all time is Oklahoman.

I wouldn't get rid of Oklahoma, because there's simply nothing to get rid of! It's mostly grassy plains. Really vacant and boring.

1. Wyoming

4. Kansas (only because of Wizard and the Oz, ya hear that Kansas?!?!?!)
5. Maryland (c'mon, people only pay attention to it because it surrounds D.C.)

I've not checked that thread, but it seems like the right wingers would want rid of Cali and liberals want rid of Texas (Am I right? xD). So I'd presume that most of the rest of the union simply isn't offensive or stereotyped enough. I mean, I can't even think of stereotypes for Montana or Oklahoma or Missouri. The Midwest has soccer moms, is kinda bland, and that's about the worst of it. It certainly doesn't do anyone much enough harm to be worth wanting kicked out when there's Commie or Nazi HQ for the bashing :p

Having never been there, I can't say a lot about Oklahoma, but I'm sure it's a pretty decent place. If I ever go, and if I remember, I'll let you know. xD

Um... oklahoma's terraine was thousands of years of adaptation to the most beneficial forms for that climate. Trees did indeed plant themselves, and died when the climate changed. In 1988, I retired from the US Air Force. My wife and I saw an add in the newspaper for a position in Tulsa, Oklahoma that fit my qualifications perfectly. I told her I would not send a cover letter and resume because I had been stationed in Burns Flat, Oklahoma before and there was no way I would go back to Oklahoma.

The wife told me (remember I was unemployed at the time and we were living with her parents) that I would send both a cover letter and resume or she would and forge my signature.

Well folks, like the wise man I did as my wife "suggested." I got the job. She was happy and I was happy with the job. Since we moved here in August of 1988, she has had four sinus surgeries and one lung surgery. She has had chronic sinus infections and hospitalized with pneumonia two or three times.

Unfortunately, we cannot get out of here until I retire and I can't afford to do that until 2009. Then we will get the hell out of Oklahoma and move to Alabama.

The people of Oklahoma are very nice, friendly and warm. The climate in Oklahoma leaves a lot to be desired, to hot in the summer and to cold in the winter. I will miss the people when we leave but not the State of Oklahoma.

Nice territory. It was actually a kind of interesting relief from the mountains and trees and winding roads of western Washington. Because it's like a smaller version of Texas. Why kick out Oklahoma when you can attack Texas, which is the same but so much bigger. You accomplish a lot more. I for one can't stand the scenery in the west. I've never been to Oklahoma, but I have been to Texas and a few midwestern states, and it's nothign but highways and strip malls for miles on flat ground. It also lacks major cities, although Oklahoma City looks good.
I don't see why people think it's flat! There've been many times I've been on the highway and couldn't see the horizon to one side because there was a hill in the way! It's not flat! It's hilly!
No, this (http://www.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/b/b1/445px-Catskills.jpg) is hilly. That's the Catskills, which is very close to me. I'm not sure about Oklahoma, but scientists once set out to determine if Kansas was as flat as a pancake. They took a pancake from IHOP and compared them on a flatness scale. 1 was perfectly flat (not sue how they did it, but it might have had to do with a regression coefficient). The pancake was about a .992, Kansas was about a .997. If Oklahoma is anything like Kansas, then it is ridiculously flat. Maybe a few bumps, but basically plains.

I know we're picked on on TV sometimes, but other than that, I really don't know what y'all think of us.I found, when announcing to friends/family/whoever, that I was going to Oklahoma for college, their reactions were limited to 1) Oklahoma, don't they have a good football team? and/or 2) Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plains...!

Then there are certain people who think we're all redskins and ride horses to school.

Because it's like a smaller version of Texas. Why kick out Oklahoma when you can attack Texas, which is the same but so much bigger. That, I hope you know, is a grave insult to all Oklahomans...

I for one can't stand the scenery in the west. I've never been to Oklahoma, but I have been to Texas and a few midwestern states, and it's nothign but highways and strip malls for miles on flat ground. Yes, Oklahoma is flat. The midwest is boring. But New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, are all very pretty. I much prefer the scenery of the west to that of the east, which is all scrunched in and over populated.

Look, Texas is much better than oklahoma. Our cities are much better and do not have oil derricks scattered throughout town(like oklahoma city, the capital of oklahoma). Texas is better but I do like oklahoma because that is the land of opportunity for national merit scholars.

Er, no, Texas sucks, I think any Oklahoman would agree with you on that. But anyway, are you National Merit? I am, but I got some offers from Texas schools for it as well as OU.

Well, not officially. But everyone of knowledge believes that I am certain to make semi-finalist(due to knowledge of past scores) and 90% of semi-finalists become finalists(my older brother became one so I think I will as well). OU gives the best deal anyway. Out of state gets full tuition and ultimately only has to pay 3,000 a year. Texas is truly awesome(I have been to oklahoma city and tulsa and they both look like crap to me).

I guess that I could be considered to be counting my eggs before they hatch but I have not been given any idea by anyone not to do so. As well, Texas is not the best but I still think it is much nicer looking than oklahoma.

I agree, Oklahoma is crap. I'm not originally from there, but that doesn't mean I like Texas any better for admitting that.

You don't even have to pay 3k. My bursar's bills come out to less than 2,500 and I have a corporate scholarship (which I got through NMSC in the first place) that covers it all.

I don't like OKC, Tulsa, or Norman, but in the end, I love OU and it's without a doubt an excellent school. The campus is beautiful and nearly everyone is very friendly and nice. It's not hard to find things to do or make friends, and, money considerations aside, I'd recommend going there.

Most Sooners are from Texas anyway. :p

Thanks for the information, I just came back to Texas from visiting OU. It did seem nice. I will admit that Texas is not the best of all places but it is not all idiot republicans(the idiots here would be no matter what). Most of the people there are alright and the cities are not that bad(Washington D.C. is in my opinion the best looking city in America that I have visited). I like living in Texas, so I disagree that it is the worst place in America but I can most certainly accept that it may not be the best.

I was born in Texas, but I disowned it as soon as I was old enough to figure out what being Texan meant. :p

Just kidding, mostly, but my relatives who all still live in Texas don't do much to change my opinion on that matter. Nor do a lot of Texaners who frequent this forum - to say nothing about you personally.

DC is the prettiest city I've seen in the entire world. (If you stick to the tourist spots and ignore the rather... er, iffy parts of the city.) Then again, I've only been to two continents, so my viewpoint may be a little narrow and biased...

Well, it sort of depends on the continents you have been to. Europe and North America are the safest continents from most points of view(assuming that you avoid the 3rd world nations anyway) and they have some pretty places due to the fact that they are successful and have much history. Texas in my opinion is not bad: we have TI, Rice(which I may not get to go to due to an e-mail I sent), Lockheed, and many other businesses.

Ok, Texans are not all idiots. Many that I have met are very intelligent. I am an intelligent Texan. I have made a perfect score on the math section of my SAT and am in the 99th percentile for my composite score on the ACT. If I am stupid, millions of people across the states are complete morons undeserving of the right to live. I like Texas but I have heard good things about Kansas.

Well, I did say kind of. :D

You're quite correct, of course, especially about the eastern part of the state between Tulsa and the border along the Cherokee Turnpike. But once you get west of OK City on I-40, it's pretty flat, especially as compared to what comes once you get into New Mexico and see the Sangre de Cristo mountains.

Okay--I don't hate Oklahoma, but as for a reason why it's not the best state in the union, it's simple.

It's not near the ocean.

For me, that's enough to take it out of the running for the best state, and potentially out of the top twenty. And besides, you've got two of the nuttiest Senators in all history from there--Inhofe and Coburn. Those guys shouldn't be let out of their homes at night and they're Senators for crying out loud.

But in the end, it's the lack of beaches and by extension, truly fresh seafood that's the main problem.

Henry, I think--Brad Henry? Saw some polls on the Daily Kos today that have him comfortably ahead of a couple of Republicans--J.C. Watts among them. That's good news.

My opinions on Oklahoma can be summed up as follows:

1. The Oklahoma tourism board commercials aired around here are terribly stupid, and also appear to imply that the entire state does nothing but engage in Native American tribal dances 24/7. However, they're still a thousand times better than the Iowa commercials ("Iowa...it'll make you smile!") and about a hundred thousand times better than the Kansas commercials, which have a tendency to accidentally suggest that Kansas is boring as hell. So, heck, you're more interesting than Kansas or Iowa (not that that was a tough contest).

2. "Oklahoma!" is a highly tedious musical, which features a song about my hometown which I despise so much that if Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein III were still alive, I might consider hunting them down and beating them with sticks while yelling, "Gone about as FUR as we can go, have we? I'll show YOU how FUR I can go!"

3. It's been somewhere over a decade since I was last in Oklahoma, and the only impression I recall was "too hot." Of course, that was in August, when it is also indisputably too hot here.

So, in short, Oklahoma is...well...OK, I suppose. :p

Saw a bumper sticker that said exactly that--"Oklahoma is OK!" Not exactly a resounding endorsement until I saw one from a local town that read "Springdale--It's not that bad." And no--I'm not making that up. :D
