I did liberty spikes once. I took forever to get them up. Rave #4 didn't work. We tried some Afro-hair product that didn't work. In the end, it was pipe cleaners and Elmer's glue. That sucked to wash out. But, mind you, it was really tall. Sucked trying to drive like that.

a friend once used super stiffy gel and an iron and that seemed to work for him

Unflavored gelatin is the key to good liberty spikes.

Lol! Yeah ... best to have a convertable with spikes.
Elmer's glue?! Yikes ... that stuff's worse to wash out than Brilcream!
Gelatin. Knox flavorless is what I used to use. Mix it into a paste with water, and smear on hair, then use hand to form the spikes. Dries quickly and hardens and washes out super easy.
