Have you ever been mistaken for the other gender on the phone?

I tried my second time today. I was calling a government hotline to ask about the opening times of a museum, AND THE RECEPTIONIST CALLED ME A 'MISS'! I didn't expose him outright, but I hinted seriously. Muahahahahaha.

The other time was a few years back, when I called a restaurant to book a table.

LOOK! IT'S NOT MY FAULT IF MY VOICE SOUNDS A LITTLE HIGHER BECAUSE I'M TRYING TO BE POLITE!

*sobs very loudly*

I think it may have happened to me when I was younger (I had a very high voice).

LOL. It's never happened to me, but apparently my mate sounds like his mum on the phone...

Yes, lots, but I think it is my accent. I get seriously pissed off when Indian call centre people call me Ma'am especially when they have my details right in front of them. I am a very hairy white african and to look at me there is no doubt that I'm male.

No but most people think I'm a lot older than I am. I have a deep voice, so a lot of people think I'm an adult, even though I'm 14.

No, but very early in my career, my principal called the house and so did my assistant principal. My father fielded both calls as I was ill with 105 fever and he thought both were the opposite gender from what they really were.

Hint: smoking really deepens and gravels out your voice after 20-30 years of doing it.

I was once mistaken for a dog by a particularly insane telemarketer, but never for the opposite sex.

I look 6 years younger than I actually am.
I don't book tables cause every time I do they complain about me yelling in their ear and hang up on me. I don't yell. That's my normal voice.

When I was young I'd get mistaken for my sister on the phone. It used to annoy me.

It's okay madame, just realize that your most likely never going to talk to that person again so it's not like it matters. :p

LMMFAO

I've had that problem before. When I call auto parts stores. I get the NO I'm sorry ma'am we don't have that in stock. It's only because I speak very softly on the phone. It pisses me off. Or telemarketers. Ma'am I'm calling on behalf of (insert name here) and we would.. blah blah blah.

*rejoices*

YAY! I'M NOT ALONE!

Next time, I'll deliberate raise my voice, so when they call me Miss I'll shriek and say, "it's a 'Mister'!"

OR THE OTHER WAY ROUND!! *following typing to be read in the low C note* "It's a 'miss' to you, dammit!"

HILARIOUS!! :D

Get a video phone - if they still make the same mistake, then consider seeking help in another forum...

When I was a kid I used to crank call people on the phone. People would always think I was a woman. I used it to my advantage in fooling and humiliating them.

Yes, I've been mistaken for what is technically my opposite gender on the telephone. I've been mistaken by others in person, as well, for many years, even before I made up my mind that I wasn't one thing or another.

But it never bothered me greatly. It's just part of who I am... part of who I've always been.

Me.
