Good movies for a date

My (recently aquired) boyfriend is coming over tomorrow, and I was wondering if anyone has ideas for a movie we could watch together.

You know, not too serious, not to obvious, not too silly, and of course, good.

Okay, the way I see it, having been a guy for quite some time, you have three options. Fuck him, watch a horror movie and then fuck him, or watch a good comedy - this is the only option, as far as I'm concerned, that wouldn't require sex for a fun night. Good comedies (that are on video) include:

Bad Santa
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Not Another Teen Movie
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python: The Meaning of Life
Monty Python's And Now for Something Completely Different
Eurotrip
Duck Soup
Team America: World Police
Shawn of the Dead
Mallrats
Dogma
Office Space
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

I was instantly thinking Amelie but damn, you're a girl. That's the number one date movie the other way round.

L4yer cake -could be alright
Y tu mamá también -if you haven't seen it yet

How old are you? (boyfriend coming over...quite young I'd assume) Station agent if my guess was wrong.

As for Bad Santa: God, damn it, are you fucking with me? Bad Santa is one of the funniest movies on that list. You just have to like sarcastic and dark comedy.

As for Jay & Silent Bob: Yes, that's the one with Eliza Dushku... why that is what you remembered from it, I have no idea.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck, mother mother fuck, mother mother fuck fuck, mother fuck, mother fuck, noise noise noise, one, two, one two three four, one, two, three, smokin' weed, smokin' weed, doin' coke, drinking beers, drinkin' beers, beers, beers, rollin' fatties, smokin' blunts, who smokes the blunts? We smokes the blunts. Smokin' blunts and rollin'..."
"Can I get a nickel bag?"
"Fifteen bucks, little man, put that shit, in my hand, if that money doesn't show then you owe me owe me o'... my jungle love, o-e-o-e-o, I think I wanna know ya, know ya... yeah, what?"

Right... I've seen that movie too many times... I didn't have to look that up... and I could go on... and on...

any movie made in 2000 on wouldnt fit any of those catagories. Since 2000 apparently they are going down the list of what they made in 1930-1999 and either remaking them or adding a number after the title. and they all suck.

Well, is this a movie to watch as a prelude to (or while) cuddling or a movie to watch as a prelude to (or while)...um...y'know?

If the former, I agree with previous posters that funny is good. Any Christopher Guest movie would amply qualify there (This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind).

If the latter, personally, I'd recommend Secretary. It's by far the sexiest movie I've ever seen, without question, and deeply romantic to boot. Of course, it's a very specific sort of sexiness and romance, and if you're totally not into that sort, then you should probably skip it.

Or maybe something else by Jeunet(Caro)? Delicatessen is brilliant too.

Yeah near on anything by Jean Pierre Jeunet and Audrey Tautou.

Sleepless in Seattle - good old sap!
Sabrina, the old version - even older sap!
Picnic - now this is hot - Ava Gardner and William Holden what more could u want... unless its:
Top Gun - macho to the max if you want to pander to that side of him (remember in Meet the Parents, you can be Iceman he can be Maverick - or vice versa)
Comrades (Almost a lovestory) - lovely romantic Chinese movie
Chungking Express - this is so cute and romantic even QUENTIN TARANTINO loves it!
Picture Bride - a sweet story of Japanese emigrants to Hawaii and how one girl becomes the 'picture bride' of this older guy.
Moulin Rouge - of course
Strictly Ballroom - where it all began with Baz, this is great fun - heck near on anything with Baz is great fun!

Then again it depends on WHAT kind of date you're planning... good luck!

Two Words: Fight Club. Edward Norton trumps Brad Pitt in this movie. And it is dark and comedic at the same time. One of the best movies in the past ten years, in my opinion.

I've never been on a date before, but ideally- a war movie or action!

If the thought of more thought provoking drama is in mind then go rent a Schindler's List DVD!

Please note that I hate chick-flicks. Although I love a good laugh, I just don't feel that it's worth going to the theatre to watch a comedy, unless it's a Jackie Chan film.

How about: Chocolat, Bruce almighty, Truman Show, Bringing down the House, K-PAX , or, of course, Love actually

If you want something less funny, I'd go for Donny Darko, Sleepy Hollow and From Hell... not very romantic, though....

If you want a war movie, make sure it was made before 1990. Try one of the cool oldies, like Bridge on the River Kwai or the Great Escape. Alternatively, try a nice romantic one like Platoon or Apocalypse Now. :sniper:
For a comedy, try either the Marx Bros. (still hilarious after all these years) or something by Kevin Smith (Dogma, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob etc.) or the aforementioned Christopher Guest.
A few episodes of Scrubs or Family Guy would work too. Good Luck! ;)

Bridge on the River Kwai is a fantastic movie. So is The Great Escape. But I don't think that they're the type of movies you would watch if you were in her situation.

I do like war movies that are thought provoking, but they can't be romantic (Casablanca is not a war movie). The occassional sex scene (although few) in some cannot count as romance. LOL!

Speaking as a guy, I thoroughly enjoyed Jean-Pierre Jeunet's latest movie, "A Very Long Engagement". It's set in WWI, so has enough fighting to keep the average guy interested. My g/f was crying by the end of it (I felt a bit teary too to be honest).
This is a good thing if you want to have a good reason to snog without being too blantant about it. If he's good any sense, seeing you teary-eyed should propell him to give you a good hug.
If he doesn't notice, dump him.

Shame you're not a guy, cause I'd have recommended "Boogie Nights". And when Dirk flops his manhood out, you could have turned to your g/f and said "My dick's exactly like that", and when she asks "That big?", you reply "No, that dirty."
Trust me, she'll love it. ;)

Actually women at that time were impressed by the marches of endless men and Hitler himself attracted many women (he had a hynotic air that reached women also and he used his marital status to his political advantage).

No, can you believe it? That's some Arab mufti from Jerusalem reviewing Waffen SS troops in Bosnia, in 1943. Whoever's anti-Semitic could be used by the Nazis, just as they had incited ethnic violence by Slavs on Jews during their occupation.

Plus you get Right Wing Nutjobs denying it ever happened and the other side saying look at the Nazis Look at them while they convienenantly hide their crimes of the same type yet not scale although Stalin gave it a good Nudge.

Dont hold it over Germany and dont get all baby faced about Germany wanting to attend D-day landings and dont believe German lies about them wanting to be liberated.

Comeeon people!

Little Women stars Winona Ryder and is about during
and after the ACW its boring as sin and a waste of time.

At War with the army is crap as well it stars Dean Martin(Maybe not him but one of the rat back...)and Jerry Lewis it is a shit arse muscial with little to do with war and apparently....

The navy gets the gravy
and the army gets the beans!....

Knights Tale is excellent.

For music there are a few choices. If you just want to get laid, go for the Stones. For something thought-provoking, try good ol' Mr. Dylan. As a background to conversation, classical music works best.
By the way, consider my earlier suggestion of a few episodes of Scrubs. One of the funniest shows on TV, and pretty romantic too. Sometimes. Oh, and for the record, when I called Platoon and Apocalypse Now romantic, I was joking. Those are the most unromantic films I can think of.

Bad Santa
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Not Another Teen Movie
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python: The Meaning of Life
Monty Python's And Now for Something Completely Different
Eurotrip
Duck Soup
Team America: World Police
Shawn of the Dead
Mallrats
Dogma
Office Space
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

If you want him to think you have an ounce of good taste, not to mention, maturity and good sense, then avoid most of the movies on this list (particularly the last one, which was completely tasteless). Dogma was kind of funny, but maybe a bit too silly. The Monty Python movies are kind of fun, but I'm not so sure about them being good date movies. The only one I'd really agree with on this list is Office Space.

Ah yes, how could we forget the rat back. Sooooooo much better than the Rat Pack. Actually, there's an idea for music: Sinatra or Dino. It's perfect! I'm a genius! An insane genius!

Finally somebody mentions a movie that's actually worth the effort of watching!

Yeah, but Schindler's List probably comes under the category of being too serious, don't you think?

You want to get off the WW2 movies? Why not go with a Bond film. From Russia With Love for example.

Bond is just a subtle Rambo with class. Bond films are so unrealistic.

I listen to classical music all the time, I must say, it's very thought provoking. It's either that, or I listen to the soundtrack of C&C: Generals, perhaps females would enjoy that too. LOL!

How can war films be romantic? Pearl Harbor is an example of trying to romaticize a war film. The results spoke for themselves.

I've never been on a date before and I don't compromise over something as expensive as seeing a movie. When I go to the theatre, I expect to see something I would enjoy. Not some chick flick or animation (unless there will be another South Park movie).

By the way, if there's a movie involving war or the Nazis, I'll be all over it like a fly on muck (if I'm ever relieved of my academic duties in time).

I think I know why you've never been on a date...

Anyway, along the same lines as you, George A Romero's Land of the Dead is a good date movie...

Here's a pickup line from Maoist China:

"Hey there, female comrade. Why don't we go out to a state-owned mess hall for dinner tonight, catch a showtrial and public execution, then come back to my commune and hump like pandas?"

(Please note that this is a joke.)
