What should happen to Karla Homolka?

Karla Homolka, the most reviled woman in Canada, responsible for the murder and rape of four young women including her younger sister, has been released from prison after serving only twelve years. What should happen to her now?

Exactly what is going to happen. She'll be set free, and driven out of every town she tries to live in.

The deal never should have been upheld. Once they realised the extent of her involvement, the deal should have been null. We clearly need to revisit the practice of making deals in order to get convictions. Though it would have been worse to have these two get off scot free...this 'pact with the devil' has really come back to haunt our judicial system. Any ideas on how we could stop this sort of thing from happening?

Let her live in peace. Of course that's not going to happen. She'll be let free but with an ugly-looking scar on her reputation. I wouldn't mind if she were my neighbor. Karla paid up, just let it go.

Rapists should have their balls chopped off. Wait a minuite......

We already have at least one current and a couple of recent threads where uninformed bloodlust can rant about Ms. Homolka.

She got a just sentence, has shown remorse, has done everything reasonably asked of her since the crimes, and has been fully rehabilitated.

She was a victim of severe domestic violence. Mulitiple independent experts and the authorities conclude that her participation in the crimes was due to battered woman's syndrome and compliant victim syndrome. She also suffered from other mental illnesses, all of which have now been treated.

She cooperated fully with the authorities and was the star witness against her husband, the primary perpetrator. As a result of her cooperation, she was given a plea bargain for a 10-year sentence. She pled guilty and actually received a 12-year sentence. She has fully served that sentence.

Nonetheless, she will have to live with her guilt and remorse and is subject to extraordinary legal restrictions -- including regularly reporting to law enforcement -- even though she is not on parole or probation.

No reasonable, informed basis can be given for demanding that to violate the law and impose more punishment on Ms. Homolka -- let alone execute or torture her -- would serve justice.

You do know that there were some 10-months or so when the deal could have been nullified after the police and prosecutors found and reviewed the video tapes?

They knew about the full extent of her participation when the deal was sealed.

Justice was served here.

And likely that lookalikes will get the same treatement, as what happened to Maxine Carr lookalikes in the UK.

Don't be so quick to use the phrase 'most reviled'. We may only be 1/10th the population of the US, but that's still 30 million Canadians. Women comprise slightly more than 50% of the overall figure, so that's still 14, 999, 999 women to bear in mind.

As to what should happen to her now? Whatever the Universe holds in store for her, surely. As to what should happen to the rest of us? Same thing. Those with axes to grind ought to take some time and think about the things they want out of their lives. There must be some greater ambitions to pursue than to be a member of a lynchmob, n'est-ce pas?

I don't agree...but that's a personal opinion, not one based on the particulars of the case. It's a gut feeling that she wasn't as 'battered' as she made out. But gut feelings don't count here.

And no, I didn't realise the deal could have been nullfied. That was something the numerous exposes and spotlights on her release have failed to mention.

Wikipedia appears to have a fairly accurate and balanced account of some of the relevant facts. Clicky. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karla_Homolka) (Warning: does give some fairly graphic descriptions of the crimes)

Isn't a funny "coincidence" that the percentage for letting Homolka go on with her life has the Devil's number? Perhaps some sort of a devilish connection? Nah, maybe not. Anyway, Homolka will probably still live a miserable life...beyond bars. Serves the bitch right.

Please note that most major reliable news sources and the Associated Press have used that or very similar terms.

Oops. I didn't see The Cat-Tribe's post.

(Mental note when viewing the poll)
-1 from life in prison
+1 for going on with her shitty life

As much as I love Canada and all the libertarian and liberal ideals I value so much, the nihilist in me says that you shouldn't have wasted all that money in rehabilitating her...

...but then the liberal in me says you should have. Aaargh!! I'm so conflicted!! Give my an Emmy.

I hate that bitch. I hope the rest of her life is hell. She deserved to serve the rest in prison but she got a bit of a gift and is now outside those safe walls. I'm glad she's not moving to my province.

The bloodlust I witness on these forums sometimes is quite frankly disturbing. I'm sure this thread, like the others on this subject, will attract every "we should torture her to death" advocate on the internet.

Just as sickening as the crime itself.

By all law, Justice was served in this case. Let her get on with her life.

Anyone who drugs their sister with animal tranquilizers, has their husband rape them and then has their sister choke on her vomit? Normal people deserve normal lives, Karla Homolka isn't normal.
