Alsace Lorraine

It recently occurred to me that it would be, on the grounds of linguistic uniformity of the various countries concerned, a good idea if Alsace Lorraine were returned to Germany.
Anyone agree with me?
yes
no

uhm. linguistic uniformity? People in Alsace speak French, some of them speak a dialect in which German and French are mixed (sounds hilarious, I love it :))
so if you want to move Alsace to a new region, on grounds of linguistic uniformity, I think they should get their very own country :p

I think that this idea is about a hundred or so years too late.

There was a big problem the last time that was seriously debated between the two countries. Don't think anyone will consider it again.
I don't think there's any real reason for it at this point.

There's a problem here.
Althoiugh the people of Alsace and Lorriane may speak German, they think they're French.
Ergo, the Teutonic Bundesrepublik ain't gettin' them.

Yes, I think another war is not what anyone reall wants.
You really don't want to start this up again do you?

Noop, been there often, the people like to stay French, altough most feel themselves "Alsacien" like the Flemish (Flanders) feel Flemish instead of Belgian first.

German speakers are a tiny minority now in Alsace-Lorraine. Most people speak French. And even when the region was part of a German state (pre-German unification of the 19th century), it was still of mixed language.
I guess you have never been there. And you haven't consulted recent information on this region. Drooling in front of a mighty Holy Roman Empire map?
Besides, the border between Germany and France has been very mobile through History... so why not the current border.
You'd also want Savoie to become an independent kingdom, aligned on Italy.
Avignon would belong to the Vatican.
Bretagne, the Channel Islands a a small chunk of England would become independant and speak Breton.
Oh, and don't forget to give Porto Rico its independence, while you're at it.
And how about pushing Poland back to its original location, now?
It's such a happy happy happy fantasy world...

Why on earth would the people there want to rejoin Germany in the first place?
It's a nice and rich country, but then, so is France...
So, when is california being given back to mexico?

What the hell would happen to poor Switzerland under this plan? :D

Guess that was directed to me instead of towards "Oppresinby".
Euh, unlike you, I visity the region almost monthly, I have a ount that has a ferme/auberge (http://www.tourisme.fr/office-de-tourisme/masevaux.htm) (it is the Gresson) near the ballon d'Alsace, and pass a lot of hollidays there. 2 weeks ago, I bought some great Riesling Vendange Tardive at Riquewihr at Hugel (guess you even don't know this great place or most famous winehouse from the region: http://www.hugel.com/
Next weekend I will be drinking some cooled Edelzwicker (another great thing of one of our regions that you don't know) with local friends near our small fishingspot in the area of the col de la schlucht.
In winter we also skid often at La Bresse or walked with snowshoes the "route des cretes" before moving to the Alps.
Unlike, you, I am almost a local and live at only some hours of Colmar and know the region and it's history by hart, like I have the reagion and it's culture in my hart.
Beter have some modesty before talking so uninformed and instead of spreading your nonsense, my family wan'ts to stay French and feels Alsatian, at school my cousins learn French, German and English and in their free time they are member of organisations that wan't too sprad the Asatian languaga and culture at their best by giving language lessons and history classses about the region.
Try better next time.

Were did you find all those assumptions? As a Savoyard, I am highly amused with those assumptions about our cultural and political habits/ opinions. :D

Of course I was extra-kidding...
But for some time during the 17th-18th centuries, Savoie was part of the kingdom of Piemont-Sardaigne.

Off course, I never would dispute that, just like the whole Bearn, Ariege, Ht Pyrenées departements did not were French before the treathy of the Pyrenees.BTW, even Scicilly was a part of Piemont during a while.
And the city of Nice is one of the last places to join France after the 100 year ago referendum in wich they prefered to join France instead of Italy.

Yep. Some regions of Europe are really pieces of a bigger puzzle.
By the way, you live in a wonderful place. I have friends from Nice and around, and my next trip to France will be to travel from Marseille (including the Camargue area) to the Jura (where some of my ancestors are from), stepping into the Alps on the way.
I've seen the Alps on the Austrian side; now it's time to look at the from the west. :)

All the people that I have spoken to in Alsace Lorraine speak French, as far as I know they are not any less happy about being French than any other region. They have a different accent, but all of the regions do. When I was in Alsace Lorraine with a German friend, most of them did not seem to know German or pretended not to at least! He said that he found more people that would speak German with him in Lyon that in Alsace!

How about we put Germany and France together into one country. We could call it Frermania...or just stick to EU.
Who gives a shit who that land belongs to? These days no one actually gains anything, economically or politically, from owning a strip like that.
And one doesn't have to look at a Holy Roman Empire Map...a map of Germany 1872 will suffice.

Texas will be allowed to seccede long before California is "given back to Mexico."

Why the ""? Did Mexico not once own large areas today associated with the US?

Can you say random and basically off-topic?
