Azerbaijan, because it's used a lot in the first Splinter Cell. Latvia would be my second choice.

Best name? The names of countries do not appeal to me. A nation is worth what a nation produces and that will be how is nation is judged.

What about the Russian Federated Soviet Socialist Soviet Republic?

I voted Kyrgyzstan...

...the only reason for that is that, unlike every other former Soviet state, I have NO idea how to pronounce Kyrgyzstan.

Would it be "Keer-geh-stahn", "Kair-jis-stan", "Kyehr-gyez-stahn"??

The possibilities are endless... :p

I have to vote for Uzbekistan as I've just spent 3 months of my life there. Which is actually Oz'bekiston in Uzbek/Ozbek. Uzbekistan is the russified version.

And having talked to an Uzbek, a Kazak, a Tatar and a Tajik, but not a Kyrgyz, I can tell you it's pronounced something like cur-jiz-stan. Well not quite like that the 'r' is hard and roled. Not an easy sound for an english speaker.

edit: and I can tell you most american's pronounce Uzbekistan something like 'oozebekistan'.

Yeah, but never part of the union I dont think. They took over most of eastern europe but I dont think the USSR grew

Poland was a Kingdom in the pre-1917 Russian Empire, it wasn't a part of the USSR.

Yes it was. Poland was the first to declare independence(or was it something else???) within the USSR I believe.

I actually like all of the names. They feel so exotic and many are places I would love to be able to travel to sometime if I ever had the ability to do so. The region of central asia has a great calling for me, for some unknown reason.

You're wrong. Soviet Russia never laid claim to Poland as a whole. The USSR annexed a good part of it in 1939, that's a fact - Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia are former Polish lands.

Why do you people find these names so hard to pronounce? It might be easier for me cause I'm from a -stan but it shouldn't really be that hard.

Two points. 1st, Russia's official name is now the Russian Federation, not the Russian Federated Soviet Socialist Republic. There is no such thing as a Soviet Republic, and there hasn't been since 1991. 2nd, Poland, and the rest of Eastern Europe were USSR satellites, but were never part of USSR. BTW, I vote for the Russian Federation, because that's where my girlfriend is from. :)

I voted for Kyrgyzstan because that's where I live at the moment. I'll return to Seattle for the summer but then I'm back for the next year or two (or as long as I can stand it).

I was living in Jalalabad, which is in the South near Uzbekistan, but in September I begin a year in Bishkek, the capitol in the North.

Teaching English, if you really must know.

Cheers, Nemo :)

And they hail from little villages near Afghanistan as well (which means their family is very strict!)

It's not "Moldavia", it's "Moldova". :D

And this tiny, elongated state manages to have a separatist region, further slicing it up -- Transdniestr. A secessionnist state that's 15 miles wide.
http://www.marisha.net/transdniestr/PMR.gif

Transdniestr rules!!!! LOL

Anyway, any place with "mold" in its name deserves a special mention.
And any place ending with "-str" is sure original enough to win a triple gold medal.

Kyrgyzstan. Wales must have owned it at some point, with that vowel/constanant ratio. :p
