Live 8 - The Long Walk To Justice.
Ya know, I think a lot of us right vs. left, or whatever political stand you take forget some really important stuff. While we all seem so consumed with the war in Iraq and justice in the world, we over look more important things than the stupid war in Iraq, like how many people a day die in Africa from simple things we take for granted.
It's something all of us in 1st world countries should be ashamed of. I realize that Africa is not a super power, they don't have oil and strategically they don't mean much. Nor do they have impressive armies. However they were on our side in WWII. Yet we forget that, don't we! But as we daily talk about world justice and liberating people we always seem to just ignore the people who suffer the most. Why? Because it's not in our national interest to care? After all they are just human beings like you and I, who's only sin was having the unfortunate fate of geography.
Today something pretty special went down, Live 8! The concert was free, the who's who of the music business were there to bring awareness to the plight of Africa. If we care so much about liberating people, why aren't we in Africa? Why aren't we forgiving debt? Why aren't we putting pressure on our elected officials to do that? Or to make free trade fair trade for the 3rd world.
I have a lot of questions and sadly, I'm not seeing anyone except these fine people from Live 8 doing anything to answer the call for justice in the world. To end poverty. Hell most of us don't even care about our own poor. I shake my head.
Then people have the nerve to call themselves Christians, or any religion that "says" they care about people and yet do nothing but build their own wealth. How or why are we so complacent? It makes me sad.

Maybe it's time to use our voices as one, no matter what country you call home, get on board, tell our public officials that we are not going to take it anymore!
Peace,
Stephanie.

i have always been a supporter of ending poverty but i dont think a concert is a very effective way to do it.

Live 8 this Live 8 that, you know if you bands/singers taking part in the concert gave £1million each - something I'm fairly sure they could afford - it'd go WAY further to helping Africa than singing about it will.

You are missing the point.. they volunteer their time (which is worth a lot to give a free concert) to bring public awareness to the masses so that everyone gets up off their ass and does something. Like lobby our governments for fiscal and social justice for the 3rd world. Sadly some are just too self centered to care about anything except themselves. Sadly that seems to be the kind of world we live in. We close our eyes to what is going on around us and pretend it isn't there. I guess it helps the selfish and greedy sleep better at night.
Also on a side note, many of these bands give a hell of a lot more than a million dollars of their own money to these causes.

Bullshit! They "volunteer" their time because it's a HUGE PR stunt for them to be seen doing it!

it seems as if you assume that we are "to self centered to care about anything except ourselves" jsut because we arent in support of this. i have never in my life closed my eyes to what is going on and i still dont think that a concert is gonna do any good.

Wow, were you not held enough as a child? That's pretty fucking cynical and perhaps true of some, but certainly not most.. Is that what Bono is doing? I think not!

What, you think people are going to go "OMG, POVERTY! I never knew!"? Maybe you were held too much as a child?
edit: I assume also that Bono didn't profit from his iPod ads?

I never assumed anything...
But you said it right there, you don't support this, thus saying, you support 30,000 African children dying daily? Then tell me, I assume?

true of some? true of all, every single one of them is gonna profit.

The ignorance is mind blowing.. Do you really believe that? It's simply not the case, none of them profit a dime.

I'd hoped they'd have picked up on that notion from my post, though. Apparently not.
