Who will host the 2012 Olympics?

As you know, the decision will be made on July 6th. With Abuja (Nigeria), Cairo, Hyderabad (India), Budapest and Toronto having pulled out, and Havana, Leipzig, Istanbul and Rio de Janeiro having failed to make the shortlist, there are five cities still in the running:

* London
* Madrid
* Moscow
* New York
* Paris

Who do you think is most likely to win it?

I would like New York to because I live there so I'd be able to get there easy enough. I hope New York does, but it will probably be London or some crap like that. Man I hope New York gets it

London and Madrid don't seem like they can handle it and Moscow is too risky. Paris has been most aggressively campaigning but I think people might be tired of it since it hosts so many other things and gets so many tourists. I'm betting on New York (yes it sounds hypocritical but Paris does actually get much more tourists). Too bad Havana pulled out, it would've been funny to see uncle sam's reaction if it won.

*London- My vote, they seem to have a good plan in place, and it is about time they host something major.
*Madrid- Still reeling after the train bombings I fear, they won't let them host.
*Moscow- Yes, and watch as Israel, America, England, and others, boycott them.
*New York- Haven't the US hosted enough olympics for a lifetime? In fact, I appear to remember (96 or 92) was in Atlanta. Give someone else a chance.
*Paris- Not sure about them, might well take it, but my votes with England.

I dont think London would be able to handle it. No offence, but having visited during the summer I can say that during standard tourist season its crowded enough. I havent been to Madrid, but considering Spains 'slight' terrorist problem, I dont think it would be a good idea.
Moscow MIGHT work, but the Russians have the same problem, only with Ukranians AND Muslims.
If it was held in Paris, I think there would be massive protests in the US which would result in some sort of wierd boycott thing :P
Beijing might be good, but with North Korea right there on the boarder, although they would think twice about attacking China, Mr. Dear Leader isnt the most...stable person on the planet, you know?
New York is...well...New York, it has the capacity to hold enough people, but its still New York :P

Overall, I think that the Olympics should be held in Tucson Arizona, so I could actually go to them for once. AND I want to see those athletes sweating like pigs in our wonderful ozone-free summer ^_^

Me personally, I think they should be held in Tel Aviv. Now there's a perfect location for an olympics. And there's no terrorist threat anymore (or next to none, one suicide bombing every six months or so, and even Hamas aren't dumb enough as to attack lots of foreigners intentionally) especially with Israel's ridiculously good security forces. So Tel Aviv 2016!

I am saying New York and not because I'm American.

New York is the only major city that has yet to host these Games. London, Madrid, Moscow, and Paris have all hosted the games. New York has not. I would love to see New York get it.

Moscow won't get due to security concerns
London won't get it due to not enough space
Madrid just had a terror attack last year or so
Paris well.... Its France! :p Though if they do get it, the US will go there and just grab the most medals! Just like we're going to do in Beijing.

New York's plan is actually workable! Besides, who'll notice the traffic disruptions anyway :D

The Olympics in New York seems unlikely, considering NY turned down the offer to build a new stadium for the NY Jets which would have held (if I'm not mistaken) at least half of the Olympic events.

AHHH!!! Someone here hasn't kept up. They want to build a new stadium for the Mets and turn Shea into Olympic Stadium.

Gotta love ESPN bottom Line :D

I think it's a competition led by London and Paris, personally. I think that Paris is slightly ahead of London simply because of their transportation. Without some serious investment London simply would not be able to handle the influx of people the Olympics would bring. Hell, London can't handle the people who already live there; subways are more crowded than sardine tins, the roads are completely locked up even with the congestion charges, British trains are a subject of jokes... Paris has its problems, and I won't say that it'll handle that many people with ease, but it stands a better chance than London does.

However, the team pushing London are trying to make some shrewd deals and they have a decent amount of momentum behind their campaign, so they could just clinch it. I don't know.

I don’t want it to be in New York. You Europeans can have it. If you want to throw away money, fine. The Greek citizens will have higher taxes for the next ten years to pay for the recent Olympic games in Athens. Anyway, I voted Paris, ya’ll figure that out.

Paris, if for no other reason than that they have "Dieux du Stade" (http://pprfilm.com/show/dieuxdustade/)*. They got their national rugby team to do it - imagine if they could get all the Olympic Athletes to do one of these calendars (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/2951592841/402-9884619-9889718)?** :D

I think, the people choosing should just put all them names of the "safe" cities/towns into a giant hat, and randomly choose one.

"In a strange turn of events, the 2012 Olympics will be held in....Ace of Diamonds, Florida? Where the hell is that?"

I hate them all.

But I have the perfect Candidate for 2016...

Boston, Massachusetts!

Yes, if they were to hold them in Boston, it would be uber. It's nicer than NY, has more space, is prettier, has cleaner water nearby, has WAY too many stadiums, has a better climate(the Summer is just right), and it would help Boston continue growing(it's still growing and it's relatively rich, but the Olympics would make Boston even better)!

It would also give the people doing the Big Dig to hurry the hell up and finish!

Madrid - The whole train bombing dealyt hasn't cooled off enough yet, they won't win it.

Moscow - Don't seem to be organized enough from what I've seen.

New York - America has already hosted too many recently: Atlanta Summer Games 1996 and Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002.

London - Has a decent shot, but again, I don't thinkk the bid is organized enough.

Paris - Strongest bid IMHO. I was there recently and the whole city is going nuts over it. They have giant signs on everything, including the Eiffel Tower, and are campaigning like mad.

Dude, London ain't crap. We've got one of the best cities in the world, as well as the best bid. We're building new stadiums, pools and areas all over the city. We're even building a special rail network. It'll also help regenerate a deprived area.

It's also a great cultural centre, with a great history and people, and it's getting better all the time.

Brilliant. Hold it in New York. In fact hold it in the US every time. No wait...every year. We wont come and then you can win all the medals and tell yourselves how great you are.
A bit like the "world series" of baseball. There's one a US team always wins.

The US has held the Olympics far too often. they always turn it into an advertising circus (they invented the advertising circus and do it so well).
Assuming no African country is quite safe enough it's got to be France or the UK.
The French had a public service workers strike on the day of their inspection which shot them in the foot a bit but they have a lot of stuff in place.
The UK (yes it's not just London where events will be held you know) have got a good plan and the investment will drag some really crap areas out of the slums.

So I vote London and the UK. It really was a while ago that we held it.

Actually, I don't think Madrid has...

I'd love it to be Paris, since I live very near there - and yes, there's banners up all over the place there to work people into a frenzy. ;) Paris has a strong bid, and London is in with a fair chance too, but I don't think we should count Madrid out too quickly. Not only have they never hosted it, but during the IOC's initial assessment their bid ranked second best (after Paris) - ahead of London! Now, it seems things have changed since then, but don't dismiss the Spanish too quickly.

Oh, and... Funafuti, Tuvalu for 2016! :) Oh, wait, they wouldn't have enough room even for one stadium... :(

All the other countries have held either a Summer or Winter Olympics in the last 25 years. While the UK hasn't held anything since 1948.

For the record, the Jets stadium on the Upper East side was not rejected. It was the notion of using $600 million tax payer dollars to help build was. The Jets still own that land and can throw in the over $1.5 billion they were going to use. Its just that more of it is going to be their own money.

I like the idea of rebuilding Flushing (the area where Shea Stadium and Arthur Ashe stadium are). It already hosted a World's Fair, so there is plenty of room to build.

The Yankees are also getting a brand new stadium set to open in 2009 (more or less the same time as the Mets new stadium).

We'll have the sports facilities. we already have the best mass transit system in the world and have more than adequate living facilites. And both of those are going to be expanded if NYC gets the games.

Besides, its the Greatest City in the World. Anyone with brains, beauty or brawn comes here to make it big. Why haven't we had an Olymics yet? If some backwards little burg like Atlanta or Sydney can hold them, you know we can.

That being said, I don't want them. Really. Athens spent more on just securiyt than Sydney did the whole event. And Barcelona, Sydney and Athens all whored themselves out to the corporations. I'd hate to see the City do that (just kidding: we're almost as big whores as those other towns). In my opinion, its just not worth it right now.

I live in Connecticut. I DON'T want it to be in New York or Boston. It'd just be way too many problems trying to accomodate them and all the people that would eventually come. Plus there's also the security risks, I really don't want something happening so close to home.

The Mets and the Yankees re both getting stadiums, and the Jets are going to build one, they just have to figure out where.

Oh, and the Meadowlands is being reconstructed. And the Nets are building an arena in Brooklyn.

Facilities will not be an issue for us.

And if we are trying to DQ the Captiol of the World because Atlanta and Salt Lake City hosted, we should DQ all EU member nations because of how often one of them hosts it.
