Politics Today: How low can it go?

Today's political world consists of 3 groups of people: Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. It has always been such during this country's history. But never before has it become so hateful and evil that it rivals the Pre-Civil War era. George Washington once said, "I fear the spirit of party". Now, yes, political parties are needed, but Washington was right. It is not about representing the people anymore, it is about having more power, on all sides.
Now I'm not saying we should do away with political parties, but they need someone for each party. Someone who will say to the opposing party, "Now listen. We don't agree on this issue, but we agree on this related issue. Let's work out a compromise and see what we can come up with." If only politicians were like that.

Yes, if the world were only perfect. The fact is that people are morons. I do not like the fact that there is so much idiocy but there is that much idiocy and more.

It hasn't always been that way. You just knee-capped your own argument be stating something patently false as truth. Further more in this sentence: But never before has it become so hateful and evil that it rivals the Pre-Civil War era. The statement that such things have "never before" occured and then the pointing to an pre-existing era where such things did occur are mutually exclusive.

Why would you write like this? Do you hate America?

True.

A. This is the way it is in america, not the world.

B. It hasnt always been this way. Only since the 1850's or so. Can I get a shout out for the Free-soilers, the know-nothings, the democratic-republicans, the federalists, etc?

Besides, the republicans and democrats arent that split. At least in congress, many senators/congressmen vote against the party line, on personal beliefs.

I don't hate America. I love this country with all my heart. The only things more important than it are God and my family and friends. I'm a jingoist, actually. Independence Day is my 3rd most favorite holiday due to its importance.

I know, but I'm just making a generalization.

And hitler made the generalization that all jews were evil. Not to compare you to hitler, but generalizations are a bad thing.

When people don't recognize a little splash of farce, the terrorists have already won. Besides, you clearly admitted to "hating America" in post #4, I called no take-backs, so you're stuck with it. What kind of Jingoist has the 4th as their 3rd favorit Holiday (A communist one I bet)? The 4th is my second favorite holiday, behind Thanksgiving. Halloween is 3rd. Just as it should be.

When i said true, i was replying to someone else because I hadn't seen that post that asks if i hate america yet. Also, the only holidays i like more are Christmas and Easter for religious reasons. I'm Catholic.

That was a close one. Though Jon Stewart and the Comedy Central SWAT team may be preparing to vertically envelop you as we speak.

You are right, except for several things.

In the US, and pretty much only the US, is there a monolithic two party system. Most other democracies have three or more parties, generally representing all sides of the political spectrum, not just Quadrant 1(from Poltical compass).

This nation has been more divided. The civil war is a good example, as you pointed out, but before that, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists, espececially in the 1800 election, were animals to each other. The fighting today pales in comparison to that. When was the last time a Democrat challenged you to a duel to the death?

I don't like the Party system at all. People should vote for whom they agree with, whom they like and whom they think will do a good job, not just vote for your own party. But, as power is the main issue, political parties are not going away, as they allow for more organized grabs at power.

Oh, and Holy Paradise - Jingoism is NOT COOL MAN. :(

Jingoism is for people who can't be bothered with critical thinking.
You have to be able to think to make the decision "I agree with my government on item A but think it's full of crap on item B."

Criticizing your country doesn't mean you don't love it. It means you are capable of exercizing your own judgement in hopes of improving it.
