Sounds good. I can safely say that I'd rather be out doing things with friends, but I don't know anybody, because I'm forced to stay in the house with my dad all day long. The internet's all I've got.
Ugh.

The first step to curing an addiction is realizing you have one. The second step..bah, screw it. I love computers/the internet. There is no second step!

wow. my mom's always yelled at me for spending "too much time at the computer" and being an "internet addict", but i always laughed at her and said that it wasn't possible.
i really only spend lots of time on computers when i'm at home with nothing to do and no people over. that's either a lot of time or a very little amount of time.
but now i'm scared... it's a possibility... i refuse to admit i have a problem  ;)

Hey, I'm the same way. What else do we have when there's nothing else to do? Seriously.

I spend some time outside and on the computer. I know when I've had enough. If i spend more than two hours on the computer a day, I will become depressed for some reason, especially on a Sunday

Meh, I used to do shit outside when I got tired of my computer... Up until earlier this week, when my dad told me not to ride my bike anymore.
I know it sounds fucked up (it is), but there's nothing I can do about it. 'Tis a shame for him, because I like him even less now.

And that's why I play NS only in moderation...
Ok, so maybe forty nations and dozens of other things related to NS aren't exactly "in moderation". :D

Its where you go to get help when other players aren't behavin themselves. Otherwise it has no meaning! :D
A number of factors have driven young people indoors:
1. Muggings. Nobody likes getting robbed or pickpocketed.
2. Extreme heat waves in summer.
3. The world's worst air pollution (one day of breathing Chinese air is equivalent to smoking a whole pack of fags).
Due to the above factors and the low cost of broadband internet, addictions would be emminent. This also makes a deadly combination during periods of holidays where students and employed adults alike experience the brief freedom from intensive work or study, where the outdoors activities no longer present appeal, the internet becomes the only recreational outlet.
I may not be living in China, but I do admit that prior to my next semester starting, I shall spend all my waking hours on the computer, either gaming or NS. I've had a very busy and frustrating semester, so these three weeks will be either on the computer or reading books for me.
Bah! All these years in front of the PC screen, I must have the same level of social skills as my favorite cartoon character- Dilbert. The artist who drew Dilbert described his social skills as equal of a mouse pad, which is not true in my case.

[ahem] hi, my name is Junii... I've always been shy... though high school, college and even when I entered the working world... I never went on a date in the real world.... so I tend to spend 7 to 8 hours on the internet... especially on Nationstates.

I think about the thread topics when I'm not on line... I linger on the Mod sites to check rulings... I'm a regular at... [sob] the PARADISE CLUB! [choke] When I found myself considering gravedigging some old threads... I knew, I just knew I needed help [sob]

Ah, but then, you don't know about the situation I'm in!
1: Going for walks is out of the question. My dad's over-protective (even though I'm a nice 5'9.2" and 150 pounds), and he states that "Some Mexican will abduct you". Oh, did I mention he's somewhat of a bigot?
2: Can't go to the library, because it's about a mile from my house. My dad won't let me walk or ride my bike there, and when I ask him to take me there, he says "No.". Wonderful, eh?
3: Can't get a job, because if I did, we'd lose our food stamps. Even if it was a minimum wage job that couldn't pay for a month's worth of food for two of us (there are three total), we'd still lose the benefits.
4: Read? I'd read, but my dad thinks books are a waste of time. I read a book once, and he yelled at me for it. So, we don't have any books in this house.
Such a lovely situation, isn't it?

Reading anything but historical reference books is a waste of time, as far as he's concerned. He simply won't allow any sort of literature.
My grandma got my brother the Complete Chronicles of Narnia, and my dad wouldn't let us read them. He threatened to throw out everything we owned if we did.
Oh, and one time, he was talking to his cousin, and she had just put down a novel. He asked what it was, and it was some romance novel (forgot the name). He yelled at her, saying, "WHY ARE YOU READING FICTION!?"... The man has mental issues.
What factors make NS so addictive? I'm an RP'er, but that can be boring at times, so I keep that in moderation. The general forum may seem like some nonstop social function but it's not exactly a real place.
I don't see how NS can be extremely addictive. I know the nature of RPs can sometimes intrude on one's life (the opportunities of catching an opponent by surprise can be very demanding) and I admit that sometimes I've been lured away by it.
Why has this thread fail to mention China now? Internet addiction happens everywhere, it's just that today's Chinese culture is very weary to hear the word "addiction", they think it requires help like those hooked on drugs (which is a very sensitive issue in China).

Looks like that man's got some issues. What does being trapped at home with a madman feel like?
I've lost interest in reading fiction, although I'm still interested in reading some of Dan Brown's works if the opportunity comes (they must have stirred up a lot of media hype and controversy). I was never a big reader of novels.
Currently, I largely look forward to non-fiction books about WWII, the Nazis or Hitler. I'm beginning to read Beevor's highly acclaimed Berlin: The Downfall 1945. I'm also reading this:

I presume you've taken English classes in school - how did he deal with that?

Yeah, I take English. And he's fine with it, because it's educational.
He's a hypocrite that way. I spend a lot of time on my laptop, and he's okay with it, even though a lot of the things I do aren't educational. However, if I were to read a novel... I'd probably end up with a black eye (and he'd end up with much worse, after what I'd do in self-defense).

How bizarre.
Incidentally, ever read the Roald Dahl novel Matilda? Your father sounds a little bit like the main character's. If you haven't, sneak out to the library and read it sometime - it's a children's book, so it's not that long, and it might give you some...ah...creative ideas about how to deal with your father. *evil grin*

Haha, I've not read the novel, but I've seen the movie, and I assume they're pretty much the same... I assume.
No, no. There's absolutely no dealing with this man, especially in my position!

How old are you Potaria? If you old enough just make arrangements to leave and strike out on your own. Losing food stamps is not a reason not to get a job im sorry. But you have control of your own destiny. Im suprised at your admission of this condition since you seem bright.

2: Losing food stamps isn't reason enough to not get a job? Ah, so I should let my brother and dad starve, then?

1: No, I can't make enough money every month at the best job I can get right now (read: minimum wage) to feed all of us.
2: Yes, my dad is unable to work. Wouldn't that seem obvious, seeing as though we're on welfare?
3: Well, I'll say this: You're not helping much, and I doubt you'll be able to help any more than you already have.
