Spain?

I guess it's old news to most people on here, but then again, I saw no specific thread about it: Spain not only "legalized" gay marriage, but did what every progressive reformer and equal rights activist had wanted: Put heterosexual and homosexual marriages to the same standards, without differentiation.

The real shocker was that, according to today's NY Times, 55 to 65% of the Spanish public supports the passage of the bill that allowed this step forward to happen, despite the fact that 80% of Spain is Catholic.

Now, I'm sure many of you know my view on Catholics (while they're religiosity isn't as bad as other Christians, their reluctance to use birth control and disregard for fellow man as a result of having many kids appalls me), I'm quite "proud", or at least overjoyed at this statistic. Even within the margin of error, more than half support it.

Then again, I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised... I mean, it's the logical thing to do. "Seperate but equal" or "no rights whatsoever" never made sense to start off with.

...So, does this move make Spain the most socially progressive country in the world? Or is its stance on other issues enough to counter this achievement?

Crap. Now I see it. *smacks head*
I only looked at the first page of search results.

Never mind. Carry on.

Hey fellow Americans.
Time to update your opinion about Catholics! ;)
In many countries (Canada, Spain, France for instance), Catholics are very moderate and progressive.
Let's drop the stereotypes...

I'm aware of that, but while tolerance and acceptance is all fine and dandy, my main issue of concern is world population, something which shunning birth control isn't to helpful with. (Not to mention AIDS, but I digress).

I didn't mean to stereotype, some of my closest friends have been Catholic.
