Seriously. me, I'll probably celebrate it by working, and letting all my co-workers with children spend the day together.

Some people cheered and one person said "GO FUCK YOURSELF YANKEE!" Yeah I made a lot of friends that day. That was when I decided to leave the hotel early.

On a personal note, we will be barbequing in mass quantity, and then off to watch the city's fireworks display.... What a day indeed..

Let's see.
USUALLY, when I'm back in the states for the summer, I will go to one of my uncle's houses, play outside for a while, play baseball, have a BBQ, launch fireworks(even where it's illegal, like Massachusetts and West Virginia :) ), then go home and sleep. However, since I'm overseas this summer, I may or may not go to the embassy 4th of July party, play Halo 2, have a small BBQ at home, and then sleep(Panamanians don't usually light fireworks for gringo holidays, although on November 3rd, Panamanian Independence Day, THEY WILL NOT STOP!)

My favorite holiday next to Christmas! The best part about the 4th of July is that it's an entire weekend holiday, parties and BBQs all weekend long with several smuggled fireworks from PA. I bought 24 shells of a firework called "Uncle Sam's Answer", 500g of powder :p
Also, if you haven't seen the fireworks show on the National Mall in DC, you haven't seen a fireworks show. Not as big as New York, but instead of of watching it from accross the east river, the fireworks explode right above your head and shake you to the core.

Pfft! Nothing compared to China.
Last 4th, I was in Army Basic Training...we all went to the Chapel and watched The Patriot on that big screen that comes down from the ceiling. It was a good 4th of July movie. A loud HOOAH permeated the chapel when Mel Gibson was killing those one guys that were marching down that one road. He was a total badass in that movie. Then we got the day off to lounge around the barracks and pretty much do nothing between meals. We entertained ourselves with pushup contests, leg wrestling, making fun of the scrawny kid going in to work in military intelligence (who fucks up at everything...including tying his boots) and various other things you can find to do in the barracks...write letters, read letters...stuff like that.
Good Times.

Well when the Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence (approved 2 days before) it technically founded our nation. We didn't become totally free till the Brits were tossed from our shores but on July 4, 1776 we were a legal nation. If you want to get technical, when the French Recognized us as an independent nation was when we really became a nation on this planet. That's a technicality though.
Anyway, yes I find it impressive that since the foundation America has had its elections rigidly on time every 2 years/4 years. You're also probably the only country that would have elections in the middle of a civil war. That's pretty damn great.
That's because we are a civilized nation :p
in turkey, high school and primary school students do some shows in the stadiums all around the country.. also we do national stuff: singing the national anthem, speeches about the past, speeches of prime minister, speeches of students.. we watch these on T.V. or in the stadium.. apart from that, we celebrate the national holidays also in our schools.. in my high school, we used to listen to the speeches of the president and students, also we watched videos and short theater plays(most entertaining part :) )

1777 with the Articles of Confederation :D
They were drawn up on June 7, 1776 (also happens to be the same day when the motion to declare independence was introduced)
Adopted by Congress on Nov 15, 1777. However, ratification by all states wasn't done till March 1, 1781.

But the Articles of Confederation didn't create a nation called the United States of America. Since each state was a STATE, a sovreign nation, the Articles were more like the United Nations charter than anything forming a new nation. September 17, 1787 however saw the birth of the Constitution, and the creation of an actual nation.

True but it still grouped all 13 states under the Articles so you can still make a case that it was still a united nation (no pun intended) because they still had to answer to a central government (albeit a very weak one)

In four days the United States will officialy be two hundred and twenty nine years old, which is pretty good for a nation which hasnt had any (successful) rebelions since its first government was brought to power.
Now I realize that somebody is going to jump in and go "ZOMG WHO CAREZ? US R ST00PID!" and I ask you to kindly go make your own thread so that it can be closed for trolling without bothering this topic.
That said,
How do you celebrate the 4th of July? If your from the US, that is. If your not from the US, how do you celebrate your Bastille Day, or whatever the local equivalent is?
Well. Happy Birthday USA. Hope all the Americans here have an awesome 4th of July.
I'm sure someone has already mentioned how Canadians in gerneral celbrate Canada Day on July 1st. Personaly, I spent this one watching a surprisingly impressive fireworks display @ a small town in Manitoba, with my mom (my Dad never went for that kind of thing, we left him @ home watching the telly) I sang Oh Canada along with everyone else, inducing many winces and funny loks, as I have a terrible singing voice (can't hold a note to save my life)

Happy birthday US, and us too. Although technically the Civil War was a rebellion that came dangerously close to succeeding... but thats a quible.
I am lucky enough to live about two blocks away from an annual major fireworks display, so we eat our BBQ and then sit in our front yard and watch.

I will honor my country's 229th birthday by going to work, deployed in defense of freedom at an undisclosed location. The daily can of whoop-ass we open on insurgents and Talibans will provide enough fireworks!

Albuquerque is turning 300 next year, so we're not impressed.
This 4th of July I am heading into town for Fair St. Louis.
Its a huge fair, there are airshows and if I am not mistaken, we have the 6th biggest fireworks show in the country, which is impressive since we dont have the population like Chicago or New York.

Ding Dang DAMN!
The last BBQ I planned (in April) was canceled because of predicted rain that ended up not happening.
Today's* is cancelled due to rain that wasn't predicted.
(*Yes, today - tomorrow's a working day in the Land of Wa. :()
Well, I spoke too soon yesterday. The BBQ ended up going on afterall. :D
The report:
Out of 30-40 who were invited, 8 decided to showed up. The Brits outnumbered those from the States. "Mike the Marine" (my co-host) got a well deserved ribbing via E-mail for his wimping out.
Much meat was eaten. Great quantities of beer were drunk. And a few firecrackers were blown up. Watermelon was avoided due to cost (when a very small watermelon costs US$15-20, I'm usually going for more meat or beer....)
The local park rent-a-cop got sent off in good style. I almost felt sorry for him when he rode over on his bicycle in the pouring rain to tell us that BBQs are a dangerous fire hazard, and against the park rules. He tried hist best, but somehow all of us had forgotten our Japanese (and "all of us" included two Japanese nationals, and a number of highly skilled Japanese speakers. ;))
We did try our best to ply him with beer and meat. And, after a minute or two, he told us, as the park cops do every time, that this time he'd let it slide, but we are not to do it again.
Today (my Fourth) was spent trying to working.

I live in North Dakota, so I'll be wondering over to the rodeo later this evening. It'll be a great party, and I'll get to laugh at all the drunken cowboys.
Happy Birthday USA:) We had ours on July 1st, and it was pretty great. So, enjoy!
