I didn't get the job I was hoping for.

I applied for a position back in the classroom, in the school I have always wanted to teach at, close to my mom's place, and I hadn't heard anything since I submitted my resume last week. So I wouldn't live in suspense all weekend, I phoned the school to ask if I'd been shortlisted for an interview, but I hadn't. I'm really bummed. My husband and I really want to move to that area (this town was just a way back into Alberta after our stint in the NWT), but I need to get a job around there first. So now I'm looking at another couple years here, in a place I don't really want to be. I was so hoping this was my chance:(

I know how you feel. There is a local school that I subbed at that really wanted to hire me but couldn't get funding for another teacher/aide.

My condolences. As consolation, allow me to offer myself to you for your own personal use in any manner you see fit.

It's less than likely:( A nearby school division just layed off 23 teachers, and it's near impossible to get a job in the city, so most will either leave the profession, move elsewhere, or look in 'my' area. Plus, rural schools being so small, few positions come up, and when they do, people tend to retire there. This is the first opening at this school in TEN years. *cries in frustration*

I guess I need to look at changing our plans for the future. We have a lot riding on me getting into that area as a teacher, but it just might not be possible. Perhaps I need to change professions.

You're too far away love, and I don't have the cash or the babysitter to free me up for a flight:)

You should move to Massachusetts. Ever since the Statehouse started offering tenured teachers early retirement packages, there has been a vast shortage of qualified teachers. Plus, it would give you easy access to me.

I'm still going to keep trying to score a salaried gig in motion-graphics. I've been doing this for too long to change now.

[sarc(?)] Maybe you were discriminated against for liking AIM folk. [/sarc(?)] :D

But seriously, there aren't openings up in the villages? I know it's cliche'd, but isn't that one of the main themes of Canada's Favorite Comic Family (For Better or Worse)

It kind of sucks to think that if I really want job opportunities, I have to leave my country. I did my travelling...and now I need to settle down for a while with my kids. Both the US and the UK have severe shortages...but I just want to get back to where I grew up, and it's looking nearly impossible. Then again, I'm discounting the real possibility of teaching on the Reservation school, and I know that's bad, but there are just so many problems there I'm not sure I want to take on...at least while the girls are young enough to need my time. *sigh*

I don't read it much:)

There's no money to hire teachers, and the ones who have the jobs hold onto them until way past retirement. WAY past retirement. The teachers who were old back when I went to elementary school, and taught ME, are still there.

And education is one of the few professions where being an aboriginal is desired, as there are so few of us in the field, and most schools in the rural areas have a fair amount of native kids.

But my last name no longer reflects my heritage, and there would be no way short of me stating it on my resume that I am native. Nor do I really want to play the race card...but I think in this case it would have helped if I did. Now I'm torn.

That's terrible.... Perhaps they weren't ready for you yet? I hope that something does turn up for you... I suppose the only thing to do is to keep trying. Ack. I don't know about employment and stuff, I just know that that's stinkeh.

A resume says so little...usually if I can just get an interview, I'm in. I didn't get the chance though. Oh well. In a lot of these jobs they have to advertise even if they already have someone in mind, just for legalities. It happens at my job a lot too, but I think it sucks. People get their hopes up. Anyway, not sure if that is what it was (or if my current boss gave a shit reference to keep me here:)), but I'm glad I'm not waiting to hear about it.

Have you tried things like commercial institutions that offer tutoring like Sylvan learning centers?

I hate those places. I worked at Sylvan, and another privat tutoring company. It's $15 an hour, very limited amount of hours and no benefits. I currently make about $25/hour on salary, with benefits. And Sylvan isn't teaching. It's following a program of exercises. You can't stray out of that...not to do tutoring, for example on how to write an essay. They have to wait to get to that exercise. There aren't any in the area anyway:).

That being said, to all my fellow Canadians, have a great Canada Day tomorrow, and a wonderful long weekend!

Hang in there, something will turn up.

Now I'm torn.As much as I detest "hiring preferences" (they have killed my job hunt - since I am the dreaded Middle Aged White Male) I think you should take advantage of them whenever you can. They are there, so use them until they are not. I'm only "allowed" one "preference" and that's my Veteran Status, but that's only good on Government jobs anyway - and there it's required to tell the truth or suffer "falsifying documents" penalty.

I say, Claim what you can. This is coming from a Usian Libertarian/Conservative. so It should be doubly valid for a Canuckian SemiLiberal! :D
