Will the Conservatives ever get into power again?

As a conservative, I look on with increasing worry that we will never get into power again. The backstairs bickering has descended already ahead of the upcoming leadership contest and it appears to all that a political whirlwind is approaching. These people do disappoint me sometimes. They can never seem to agree on anything. However, do you think that the Conservatives will ever get into power again? Or do you think we are finished?

in britian... i doubt it.
in america (and im not trying to change the topic) they do have all the power, and are gaining more power each day... the democratic party will die in a matter of years (my prediction, 2 decades tops)

Yes conservatives will regain control at some point. These things work in cycles. After a period of time (seemingly endless) whatever the controling authority is becomes too well set in its positon. They become abusive and basically drunk with their own power, thus slowly at first alienating their own support. People start leaving the party and they start loosing elections on a regular basis. The trend continues until the other side takes control and it will last for as long as they can balance their judgement against their power in a manner acceptable by the people. It is my experience that large groups cannot actually be successful at this balancing act for any length of time. Intoxication of power requires a steadily increasing dosage in which to feed.

The democratic party will not die. It may change it name and it may change some of its basic principals, but there will always be the opposition represented by the minority opinion and at some point, unless they are as misguided and poorly led as now they will regain power for a time.

Probably when the taxes get to be too high and the majority of people want more financial freedom... but it really depends on your people -- if you like your tax/socialism rate, change might not happen.

Well the problem for the Conservatives is that their main support has been taken by New Labour. So the only way to get back into power is to take that base back, and therefore change the current policies.

Also you need to clear out the old guard from the Thatcher and Major Years, as the longer you keep them the more this works for Labour, as the past 3 Labour election campaigns have been based around the 16 years of Conservative Government preceeding the "New Labour Years" and how awful they were.

Finally you need to pick a Charasmatic Leader who will appeal to the people and not the Conservative Party, as many still view the Conservatives as out of touch.

Uhh, I doubt that. right now Bush popularity is declining, his war support is declining. Last I checked, in March, his popularity was 45% as opposed to 51% in November, I wonder what it is now?

Well being they put a big cut in Blair's majority this past election, knocking it down to 66 I believe, if the districts are redrawn properly in 2007 the Conservatives may very well swipe aside Blair's successor if he steps aside as PM or is force out. Anyway they will likely next election assuming they run a semi-competant campaign at the very least cause a hung parliament and if they get the middle-class support back from Labour (especially if Labour attempts to shift to the left to counteract the Iraq backlash) then the Tories may very well come back into power, albeit with likely a smaller majority than Labour has at present.

Since he'd be invading Spain, because of what they did to his father and all the things France did wrong, I wonder if we Americans wouldn't be getting the better end of that deal.

The poll numbers for one individual have no relation to the overall balance of power between the two parties. To actually change a trend in either direction at that level it is necessary to alter the individuals basic belief system, which is a much longer process than one widely percieved bad politician. The democrats came to power only after years of abuse by large companies and a government that had always supported business over the people. It took quite a lot to turn that trend around including the broad daylight murders of many workers who dared to strike for better conditions, and this doesn't include the numbers killed because of those conditions.
By the same token, the democrats did not lose their power in one easy step. It took years and years of abuse to change the american populations mind. But what they do have in common, is that it is seldom what the opposition does to change their minds, it has more to do with what the side in power does to drive them away.
