My overall favorite alcoholic beverage is red wine. Right now I'm on a run with this one:
Menage a trois by www.folieadeux.com

It's a blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet and Merlot. So, it's not too dry, not too sweet, very juicy. It's easy to drink and actually suits a hot summer day when everyone else is drinking overchilled whites.

My favorite that I've had so far is Stag's Leap Cabernet.

Another favorite is Schug Pinot Noir.

Then, if we're not drinking wine, I'd have to say a porn-star dirty Ketel One Martini straight up with blue cheese stuffed olives. (Yes, I know that officially this is a Vodkatini, not a martini which is always made with gin. Very few others seem to know this, though)

If we have to drink beer, I'll gladly have a Murphy's or a Beamish. (This is notable as I'm a distant descendant of a very large German beermaker.)

Lol, well I've never heard of any of them drinks!
OK, then I'll have to explain a bit.

Spanish and Portuguese red wines:
They strike the perfect balance between heavy, sweet wines of the south (Australia, South Africa, Argentine) and the northern wines, more acidic and fruity. So a good Portuguese wine can be matched with about any food (especially red meat or anything with cooked tomato). Italian wines are good as well... but they're usually wayyy too expensive if you want to get the same quality level. So go Portuguese or Spanish.

Alsace white wine:
This if France's BEST KEPT secret. Forget the expensive Bordeaux, the boring Beaujolais, the overrated Bourgogne or Chinon. You WANT to drink Alsace wine, because EACH ONE of these is a gem. They're all white wine. Each is made with one of 6 raisin types, having their own personalities:
Riesling - the best known; slightly acidic, greenish, good with seafood
Gewustraminer - tastes like pear, good with appetizers
Tokay Pinot gris - soft like velvet, oily texture, delicate taste; good with cheese
Pinot blanc - just like little white flowers, fresh and happy
Muscat - very sensual, sweet, a wine for two
Sylvaner - (I haven't tried this one yet)
NOTE: these wines are a bit more expensive than the other white wines, but it's well worth the prices. At 15$-20$ a bottle, it's a good wine for that "special meal with that girl".

Spirits:
Grappa: It's a 40% strong italian alcohol, which looks like water. It's made from distilled wine... usually good quality Toscan wine. It's very strong, but with a pleasant aftertaste. In Spain they add it to coffee sometimes.
Pisco: The Chilian version.
Palinka: Same thing, but made with any fruit alcohol (usually prunes), distilled. Made everywhere from Hungary to Albania.

Canadian Alcohols:
Fine Seve: Pure maple alcohol, distilled. Tastes a lot like a good scotch. 40%.
Sortilege: Same thing, but mixed with brandy.

Pinot noir - the everyday white wine; good with anything.

Pinot Noir is a red wine!

Tokay Pinot gris - soft like velvet, oily texture, delicate taste; good with cheese

Same grape as Pinot Grigio; they are often very similar. Good wine for a hot summer day. Easy to drink, fruity, accessible.

I'm not as much a fan of the Alsatian wines; I find most of them to be too sweet.

For me it has to be a pint of real ale.

I was a lagerboy, but converted to the good stuff and now I can't even fathom drinking lager. Yuk. The good thing about real ale is the variety (Hobgoblin is my fave though) and the taste is great. Also, the hangovers are no way near as bad as when you've had a night on the lager.

Any form of bitter or cider. Lager makes me feel sick (probably due to drinking it too much when I was younger), and it's generally too fizzy for my tastes.

Alcopops and a lot of other stuff I think are far too sweet, so I generally stay away from them (some notable exceptions though, such as Sambuka).

I generally try and stay away from spirits since I tend to, umm, "over indulge" (;)) and frequently wake up the next morning with no memory of the previous night past 10:30 :(

Though I am partial to the odd Gin and Tonic, and vodka over ice.

#1: Water
#2: Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice, with 80% pulp filtered out

No longer drink on a regular basis, but when I do its often beer. usually Warsteiner, a Black & Tan @ the local, or a shot of Grappa and a glass of homemade italian Red wine, and a nice cup of esspresso. The grappa and espresso are best consumed in this order: a half shot of Grappa followed by a few sips of espresso. repeat until finished, option 2 is to keep refilling and repeating until very drunk and very hyper. I do this every 2nd month or so when I visit my Italian ex-girlfiriends father & grandpa, ostensibly to work on one of our (italian & vintage) cars, but really to trade war stories and get happily hammered. I get along with the old boys much better now that I'm no longer a prospective son-in-law. ;)

Here's a *secret* recipe for a shooter that kicks some serious ass.

FERRY DISASTER
- 2 oz white rhum or vodka
- 1 red maraschino cherry
- a few drops of juice from the cherries
- 2-3 drops of red Tabasco sauce

Pour/drop it all in small a shooter glass.
Drink it in one shot, catching the cherry with your teeth.

(The name comes from the newspaper headlines I was reading when I first prepared this drink!)

I was bar hopping with two friends. We went into a bar and I stepped into the washroom. When I got back there were three shot glasses of somekind of frothy conconction. I didn't know what it was so I was reluctant to try and waited until my friends downed their drinks before picking up the glass. I was in the process of drinking when one friend asked the other what the drink was called. I choked when he replied it's an "Orgasm" and ended up inadvertantly spraying the friend who had asked what the drink was called. After a chuckle the other friend remarked "I take it you don't swallow."
