Always the Baker! He has the best voice.

And the best scarf.

Christopher Eccleston because I have only seen the new season. I've heard the original series was pretty interesting though.

I grew up watching the original series on my local PBS channel here in the states. So I only saw 3-4 of the different actors involved. But between them I would have to say either Jon Pertwee or Tom Baker. Both were quite good and made the show very interesting. Although Tom's craving for jelly babies and unique clothes definitely made him more memorable. (On a sidenote, I also liked his appearance in The Chronicles of Narnia.)

Patrick Troughton, with this wicked, mischevious wink.

Was Jon Pertwee. Was then a fifty-fifty between Pertwee and Baker. Didn't see enough of McCoy to really say, though what I did see (Paradise Towers), I liked. Ditto Paul McGann (much as I enjoyed him in Withnail & I, and in the television movies based on Horatio Hornblower).

Everything changed with Chris Eccleston, though. No other Doctor Who series, no other actor, has touched me the way Chris' version of the Doctor has. Period.

Rowan Atkinson because he's the only one I've ever heard of. Mr. Bean!!

Does anyone happen to know if the new series of Doctor Who is being aired in the USA or not? I haven't watched that show in years. I suppose it's probably on PBS at some point, but while teaching during the school years I don't usually have much time to watch television. Now that it is summer I could probably watch it regularly again.

Give Captain Jack his own series!

Nope. Canada put up some money for the production, and its being shown there, while Australia and Korea have also bought the series, but there have been no take ups in the USA.

Fave Dr. Who

Peter Davidson
...

Just the one 'D', as in 'Davison'.

Favourite Doctors in my opinion? Troughton, then Davison, maybe Hartnell next or even Colin Baker on the strength of his work with Big Finish. Pertwee comes bottom of the list of the nine main actors for me.

CLASSIC: Sylvester McCoy.
NEW: Christopher Eccleston.

Chris would definately win in a battle of the two...

Christopher Ecclestone is OK, but i don't find the shows as scary as the original series and i don't like his smart alec comments that are not necessary, but thats just me!

Give Captain Jack his own series!
Give Adam and Lynda theirs too! Why did the Doctor leave both of them (Lynda and Jack, we all know what Adam did!)? Lynda could have been a good companion, and Jack, well, let's just say that the Doctor's viewing figures would have gone even further up!

Something to do with the fact that they had both died? Not having died seems to be a prerequisite for the position of companion, no?

Thanks so much for the response. That's too bad. Maybe one of these days I can see what some of you are raving about regarding this new actor, Christopher Eccleston.

BWO, you're sort of spoiling for the people in New Zealand and Australia...

I don't remember about Lynda, but as far as Captain Jack goes,

SPOILER:the Bad Wolf restored him to life. I was all choked up and teary-eyed by that point, did the Bad Wolf restore any one else aboard the station to life?

I think I'll definitely have to pick up the series on DVD when it's available.

'pologies. I had forgotten that the Australians hadn't reached the end of the series yet, unlike us in the UK and the Canadians. I've whited out my initial response - do they same for your quote?

I have yet to see Christopher Ecclestone. Mr. H. says anyone who doesn't vote Tom Baker isn't a "real fan" of the series. I loved him too. I can't imagine a 'new' one. But who knows... I've never seen him. :)

I'm quite enjoying the new series. Eccleston is doing a great job, and Billie is a good sidekick (and very hot, too) :)

But my fave will always be Tom Baker - I grew up on it!

Somehow I can't picture the Doctor fighting himself.

There was one 15-part-or-so sequence in the 80s where one incarnation of the Doctor did, in fact, fight another....

Also, Tom Baker wins for me, although it's been forever since I've seen anything with Doctors 1 & 2, and I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic to know anything about the new version. *sigh*

Have you SEEN the end of the last episode? I mean, if Jack lived (you see him exterminated, then later he is brought back by the Time Vortex and was left on S5 when the Tardis left), then Lynda must have had a chance...

Based on that last “spoiler” and other things I have read on this forum about Dr. Who, this show sounds way to weird for an American audience. I hope no one tries to export it here, because no major American network would take it. The era of prime time sci-fi ended long ago in the US. The X-Files was the last to go on for any extended period of time.

It's a toss-up between Tom Baker and John Pertwee. I liked Pertwee's dapper character - he had an humble arrogance about him. Baker played the fop, but was much more intelligent than his protagonists gave him credit for. His work on the origin of the Daleks was trememdous.

I was just getting used to Ecclestone when the season ended. I wasn't impressed with him during the early shows - he seemed like a spoiled child, but once some of the backstory came out, one could see where he was coming from.

Once the rest have seen the end of the series, I'll post a few more thoughts

EDIT: I haven't seen David Tennant or Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor - I'm not sure if these episodes have jumped the pond to Canada.

Can someone fill me in?

Tennent only appeared for a few seconds so we'll have to wait until Christmas until we can say anything about him.
Rowan Atkinson played the Doctor for Comic Relief a few years back in a story entitled "The Curse of Fatal Death". Was quite funny with the Doctor eventually using up all his remaining regenerations and eventually turning into Joanna Lumley with Etheral Beam Locators (or breasts to everyone else!).

Best Doctor...best Doctor...hmmm

Hard question to answer, they were all good in one way or another.
My favourites would have to be between Patrick Troughton and Sylvester McCoy. Shame we aren't allowed multiple choices...

Thanks - I didn't remember Tennent's name. That hasn't been very well published here in Canada. And, yeah, the jury will have to be out for a while on that one.

BTW does anyone other than me think that Cushing was the worst Doctor?

I didn't find Cushing an altogether awful Doctor, though he's far down the list as far as I'm concerned.

The worst?

Colin Baker. Hands down. If anything killed the original series, it was the season with Colin Baker at the helm.

Sylvester McCoy's wasn't much better.

I did feel sorry for Peter Davison, following two strong Doctors in Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. I don't think they ever really gave him a fair chance at developing his Doctor.

Ahem, yourself...

But to the best of the Doctor's knowledge the pair of them are both dead. Otherwise why would he have abandoned Harkness without a by your leave or thank you.

Strange to mention them, but not mention Hurndall... however we don't want to go too far into this lest we get entangled with stunt-men, body doubles and the faces from The Brain of Morbius.

The worst?

Colin Baker. Hands down. If anything killed the original series, it was the season with Colin Baker at the helm.

If you ever hear any of his Big Finish audios, they are very likely to make you revise your opinion of him as a Doctor: he positively glows in that medium once the JNT visual trappings are striped away from him.
