Guitar God Poll

Freudotopia
30-06-2005, 05:05
A few of my favorite hard-rockin guitarists. Who do you like more? Who belonged to a better band? Who is the better soloist? Who has the catchier riffs?

OBVIOUSLY NOT THE ONLY GREAT GUITARISTS, SO DON'T START BITCHING OR I'LL KILL YOU FASTER THAN YOU CAN BLINK. IF YOU HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR A TRUE AXE MASTER THAT SHOULD BE ON THE LIST, POST IT, AND I'LL GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT.

Now that that's out of the way...

Slash, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoades, Jimmy Page, or Angus Young?

As you may be able to tell from his prominent placement, Slash is my personal favorite. He may not be the best guitarist ever (what does that even mean?) but his style really moves me.

http://usera.imagecave.com/mobrule132001/Slash2.jpg

This is bullshit! Eric Clapton is the greatest Artist with a guitar ever, PERIOD.

I certainly agree that Clapton is one of the top three greatest guitarist ever, but if you read my post, it states specifically 'hard rock' guitarists. Clapton, as I'm sure a fan like you already knows, was much more of a blues artist than hard rock. He did do his fair share of rock n roll, though, so he really does deserve mention. Don't get me wrong, I do this with no reluctance whatsoever.

Clapton is God.

Good choices but if this is a category for rock guitarists then maybe Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction, Carlos Santana and Robby Kreiger from the Doors should be included.

Adding Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath, Alvin Lee from Ten Years After and Pete Townsend from the Who.

Malmsteen is def. a guitar god, no matter what anyone says. And is this just electric guitar? Even if so, I think Flea should be in. For those of you who aren't fans, Flea plays Bass for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and, even if you don't like their music, listen to Around the World or Californication sometime, listen to the bass part. Face it; Flea is a god.

Young, Van Halen and Rhodes are not in the same league as the others you mentioned or about 20 others you didn't. There's not a single jazz, blues or classical guitarist on the list and everyone on the list is a hard rocker from the 80s except for Hendrix, who is the standard favorite of the tired old music media (Rolling Stone, for instance.) For technical skill, the Delta bluesmen blow any rock and roller out of the water (I still prefer rock, but that's a different story.) As far as favorite, that's personal preference, but I like Pete Townsend. He has the most distinctive style in rock and has influenced many great bands.

The blues obviously is the basis for almost all American music. However, I must limit this to rock music, as I've said. And for those of you who want to include bassists, I could make another poll...maybe I will. My vote would be big John Entwistle.

I don't like "death metal." I like to think I have a fairly broad view of music, but I can't think of any "death metal" artists that really should be on the list. Mainly I think this because in my opinion, "death metal" is just taking Sabbath's stuff, mixing in some of Ozzie's other stuff, and making it slushier. I don't think they've contributed very much in originality.

There are too many guitarists, but out of what was in the poll, I had to choose Hendrix, because he was an inovator and did things never done before. (Trust me, I just had a boring class about it  )

But there are classical guitarists, Spanish style guitarists, etc, who could probably blow these guys away.

Again, there are too many excelent guitarists to ever choose one!

A good question that I might be able to answer would be more like this:

"Which 100 guitarists do you think are the best." I might be able to answer that! :)

In response to the recent ignorant broadening of the topic, I would like to bow to the demands of the people. Instead of taking the poll, list the 10 guitarists OF ANY STYLE you think are the best. I'll refrain from listing mine until everyone else gets to have a say.

Then at the end, we can tally the votes each guitarist gets, and then make an UBERLIST. I'll call it the "People's Choice Award."

No, wait. Fuck that idea. Why would I even think of that? Terrible. List your top ten NOW!

EDIT: Or you could just take the poll and say why you like the guitarists I actually wanted to compare, instead of just bringing in a hundred names that I don't really think could be in the GUITAR GOD category. Your choice.

Micheal Angelo Batio, fucking amazing makes a lot of guitarists look like idiots.. also plays a twin neck guitar, but not like Led Zepplins guitarist... he also has a quad neck guitar,

John Petrucci
Samoth - not brilliant, but his style is awsome
Abbath - again not brilliant, but has one of the hardest styles to master,

and if we are to include bassists also my vote goes to either the Mudvayne bassist, and Primus's bassist, Les Claypool, makes flea look like a complete muppet

well im kinda late to the party here, but it really depends on what is "better." Like Van Halen and Malmsteen can shred like mofos, but they've got nothing else, whereas Santana would be killed in a guitar-off but he's got much more feeling and soul instead of notes. I think the best guitarist, combining technical skill and feeling, would probably have to be Eric Johnson. He can bust out insane licks when he wants to and it doesn't sound crappy like two-handed shredding. I saw him (and Clapton, Cray, and tons of other guitar gods) front row at Crossroads Guitar Festival last year. It was badass. :D

Of the present, I would have to choose Jimi Hendrix....

Contributions made on the larger global guitar scene though, are so numerous and diverse that there is no single one "best".

To the departed I say "Thanks..." and to those still around "Rock on..."

has anyone mentioned Alexi Laiho yet?

I will!

Alexi Laiho :p But seriously, he's fantastic.

To all the people who said Malmsteen has no emotion, does that include all his classical/neo-classical music? Because, to me at least, that side of his music has emotion in.

Kurt Cobain
Joe Strummer
Johnny Ramone
Jerry Cantrell
East Bay Ray
Noodles

Kurt Cobain was a great song writer not a great guitarist. Joe Strummer played rhythm guitar. If you can play three chords over and over then you're as good as Johnny Ramone. I don't know who Noodles is. East Bay Ray is the only good guitarist you mentioned.

Randy Rhoades, for his tasteful use of high level technique without ever losing a sense of melody. That way you can happliy tap along, throwing in pinched harmonics and dive-bombs left right and centre without people wondering what happened to the music..

But I'm a big fan of SRV too. Bring back the blues!

Proper Metal Guitarists:

Slash (GnR, VR)
Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Dimebag, RIP (Pantera, Damageplan)
And the guitarist out of Chimaira, the name escapes me! (the drummer out of this band is God himself!)

Best Rock guitarists

Hendrix
Brain May (his solos are amazing)
Guitarist out of Pink Floyd (again name escapes me...)

Best ever has to be Hendrix, best living is Slash PERIOD.

May I ask, where is Tony Iommi? The creator of the "Iron-man", "Paranoid", and "N.I.B" along with other instant metal classics.

I voted for Hendrix, just because its an undeniable fact that he is THE guitar god. After him comes Jimmy Page and Clapton. Jimmy page may not have wrote a ton of music or anything, but he FREAKING OWNED. And Clapton is also a given, but since I am a hardcore Zeppeleptic, Page had to come first.

Oh ... and Muddy Waters, too.

... and T-Bone Walker

Damnit ... do you people even know what a guitar is?!

I presume you were going to mention B. B. King? :)

:headbang: Oopsie.

For King Graham IV - Pink Floyd's guitarist was Dave Gilmour.

And we can't forget Steppenwolf's guitarist from whom the term "heavy metal" derives.

Billy Gibons.

Hendrix aclaimed Gibons as the best guitarist alive.

he didn't get any worse.

I particularly like Robert Cray. Very percusive style.
