As some people have been begging for a topic that doesn't have the word 'gay' in it... (Whoops, already I've ruined it! :D )
Today, Stats Canada released a study that found that crime goes down when inflation goes down.
"Inflation in Canada rose between 1971 and 1975 and again between 1978 and 1981.
"Financially motivated crimes also grew during these inflationary periods. Throughout the 1990s, when inflation rates were relatively stable, crime rates declined.''
The study also found that when unemployment goes up, particularly coupled with alcohol consumption, homicide goes up:
The study also suggests that there is a possible link between alcohol consumption, unemployment and homicide. When alcohol consumption and unemployment increase, so does homicide, StatsCan said.
Maybe, just maybe, there's something to what we lefties have been saying: Give a person a decent living wage and a goal in life (whether that be employment, parenthood, volunteering, whatever) and crime goes down.
What do you think?
