Inflation up = crime up. Inflation down=crime down

As some people have been begging for a topic that doesn't have the word 'gay' in it... (Whoops, already I've ruined it! :D )

Today, Stats Canada released a study that found that crime goes down when inflation goes down.

"Inflation in Canada rose between 1971 and 1975 and again between 1978 and 1981.

"Financially motivated crimes also grew during these inflationary periods. Throughout the 1990s, when inflation rates were relatively stable, crime rates declined.''

The study also found that when unemployment goes up, particularly coupled with alcohol consumption, homicide goes up:
The study also suggests that there is a possible link between alcohol consumption, unemployment and homicide. When alcohol consumption and unemployment increase, so does homicide, StatsCan said.

Maybe, just maybe, there's something to what we lefties have been saying: Give a person a decent living wage and a goal in life (whether that be employment, parenthood, volunteering, whatever) and crime goes down.

What do you think?

Except that "lefty" wealth-redistribution policies tend to have an inflationary effect on the economy...

Yeah, but tend to drive down unemployment. So we'd have crime, but no homicides :-p.

That's absolutely right. Give people jobs and crime will drop. But "leftie" policies tend to promote dependence on the government reducing people's reasons to get jobs. They also tend to have a harmful effect on the economy and employer's leading to less jobs being available.

Well, that's why I included the phrase "goal in life". I agree that dissatisfaction (and therefore crime) would increase if people didn't have something worthy to do. That is why I included jobs, parenthood, and volunteerism into the equation.

And for the earlier poster, intelligent left-wing economic choices do not have to automatically drive a country's economy into the ground. The trick is picking the right ones. But there are a number of lefty economists out there -- for example, the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives could draw up some practical possible plans.

This is an old fact of life. People with nothing to do and no money are idle hands. Idle hands lead to nothing good. Nothing new in this study really.

There are three types of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.

Who said that again?
