Why?
Jack used to be 90 proof. Then the price went up and the proof dropped to 86. Then the proof dropped once again to 80. Why should I pay more for a product that's been watered down from the original recipie? I have joined Modern Drunkard magazine in their boycott of Jack Daniels and have emailed the CEO. His response was as unsatisfying as his bourbon.

With an 'e' or without, I'll take it anyway it comes. Either way you're cutting off two countries with some really good products. (Let's see...without moving from my chair I can see bottles of Laphroaig, Glenlivet, Black Bush, Wild Turkey, and Knob Creek...the Crown Royal is in another room...)

BTW, it's spelled s-p-e-l-l-e-d...spelt is a grain. ;)

Well, I can't find my 2003 Webster's 3rd, but my 1989 Random House 2nd says that the standard spelling is indeed whiskey, with whisky being an acceptable alternate spelling especially used for Scotch and Canadian varieties.

Dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=whiskey) says the same thing as your Random House dictionary.

And "spelt" is an acceptable past tense and past participle of "spell (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=spell)". Click the link and look at the definition yourself. You'll have to scroll half-way down the page to find the "spell" which has to do with words, but it's there.

You don't need a dictionary, just ask your local friendly drunk. Whisky is the accepted spelling for Scotch and Canadian beverages, whereas Whiskey is the accepted spelling for those that come from America and Ireland.

Either way you spell it, though, whisk(e)y is the sweet, golden nectar of the gods. A truly sublime melding of earth and water, fit for the homes of king and pauper alike.

Actually, the theory of common ancestory is currently losing out to multiple-evolution. For example, the "Hobbits" of Indonesia. There's also proof of at least some racial mixing with Cromagnons.

But the "hobbits" (damn! I hate that name!) is actually an offshoot of Homo Erectus, a parallel branch not an ancestor to modern man. They were actually displaced by Sapiens Sapiens when they got to the island. Cro-Magnon is already Sapiens Sapiens.

Erectus was very succesful and developed several branches that dispersed across the world, including Sapiens Neanderthalensis and Sapiens Sapiens, the first evolved in Europe and the second in Africa, as far as we can tell. Sapiens Sapiens is modern man and walked out of Africa about 100,000 years ago (EDIT: Sorry, meant to say evolved about 100,000 y.a. and walked out of Africa some 60-70,000 y.a.) displacing all the other Homo species (I think they ate them).

I think that the tracing of mythocondrial DNA has given the theory of common ancestry a very strong backing.

I think the Chileans had someone being born there in case they needed something to reinforce their claim on Antartica later. I'm not sure, will have to find out more.

EDIT: I was wrong. Not a Chilean, but Argentinean:
Emilio Marcos Palma was the first person born in Antarctica (Base Esperanza) in 1978, his parents being sent there along with seven other families.

I haven't been able to find more, sadly.
