Yesterday I saw a very interesting spider, so today I took my (newly bought and still very enjoyable to muck about with) digital camera to take a pic:

Unfortunately I couldn't get a photo of it's front, as it was on a tree up a slope and I couldn't climb round it. I didn't really want to push it round cause I figured something that colourful is probably pretty poisonous. It also got pretty pissed off cause the wind destroyed it's web - hence the fangs being extended in this pic. The picture is about life-size btw.

Anyhow, anyone here know what it's name is. Scientific name that is. I don't want any smartarse posting that it's name is "Brian" or something similar.

In case you don't know already - I live in Hong Kong. So it's some sort of South Asian spider I'd guess. Narrows it down a bit.

Thanks in advance. I like finding these things out.

It looks like the Golden orb-weaver, or Nephila pilpies , in my opinion

Wow, good call. I just checked the web (excuse the pun) and you're 100% correct. You certainly know your spiders. One of the other photos I took had the tiny red male sitting next to the female. The wind blew him away though.
Cheers for that. Big thank you and fluffle :fluffle:

Kein Problem!

Thanks for the fluffle, and here's one in return. :fluffle:

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

Just one - are they poisonous? And if so, how poisonous? The website I went to that had almost identical pics didn't say.
