It's not a hoax, and it's happened accidentally to humans before too. There have been a handfull of cases where humans who were plunged into icy cold water and rescued some time later were resuccitated even though they'd been clinically dead long enough for their brains to die. Somehow the extreme cold preserves the brain tissue and allows the animal to be revived. There's actually a species of frog that does this every winter. They freeze solid, their cells protected from rupturing by a chemical that prevents the formation of large ice crystals, and then thaw out and get to mating.
