A quick thought

It seems that everyone who truly believes in a heaven, or pleasant afterlife, believes they are going there. Just food for thought.

Rare is the person who would say she is going to hell. With that said, I'm going somewhere myself...to bed :D

I think mormons have some belief where it is extremely hard to get into heaven, and only a few actually make it. OR so I have been told. Something about the more suckers you convert the better the odds or something like that, which is why they are always knocking on your door giving out books. I could be completely wrong on that though.

Hmm...the only thing I could think of to contradict myself would be Calvinist predestination, but even then, most might think they will be the predestined ones.

They seem to often think they're among the "Chosen Ones." And there's usually a list of people who are NOT going to heaven. Usually these people are not liked by the heavenly ones. And as often as not, the people on that list... have their own lists, only on theirs THEY are going to heaven and the original list-makers are going to burn. All seems pretty convinient to me...

I am looking around for my copy of Edith Hamilton's Mythology but I can't seem to find it. I know in Greek mythology most people believed they would go to dreary old Hades, but there was also a kick ass heaven for great heros and warriors which normal people could never hope to achieve.

Anyway there wouldn't be much of a point to subscribing to a religion if all it's going to get you is eternal damnation anyway. It'd be kind of a waste of time I would think.

More accurately, they believe that 'Heaven' is a multi-level system. It's really hard to get to the highest level, reasonably easy to reach the second, and practically everyone can hit the third. And then there's a sub-level for a certain class of utterly evil people - I believe the qualification is having absolute proof that God exists, and still acting against him.

As for how one attains the highest level... I don't /think/ it's through converting people, what with the 'We claim the privilege of worshipping the Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may' thing (Articles of Faith 11, and yes, I looked that up), but I may be wrong. I don't claim to be an expert. Not yet.

You point shows that most people who have faith are so caught up in the assurance of faith that they ignore their own problems and continue to beleive in their ignorant, idealist afterlives. Why can't people just realize their actual afterlives and try to fix them. This would remove all actual guilt, concious and unconscious, and lead to a freer soul.
