The following is likely to be highly biasedand may be laden with anti-Christian sentiment:

This nutcase comes to NYC to talk about Jesus this and Jesus that. People say how they were saved by his speeches. Saved by believing in some schizophrenic bastard(the real meaning)? Sheesh, they have 2 Billion followers and they want more? You don't see rabbis walking around asking people to believe in God or else they'll go to hell. No Muslims say Believe in Allah and go to paradise. What's the point. Hey look its Jesus's image on my pancake! All worship this pancake and be saved!

Just curious - why do you mock a man who teaches a religion?

Why do you mock his faith?

Why do you mock his faith?Same reason why people mock the guy who sends an e-mail saying he works in the bank of Nigeria and will send us $10,500,000 from some dead guy's abandoned account as long as we send him some money first. Same reason why people mock the guy who sends an e-mail saying he'll pay us $5000 to stuff 20,000 envelopes as long as we send him a security deposit of $60. Same reason why people mock the guy who says he'll teach you how to make millions of dollars on the real estate market if you attend his really expensive class.

2 billion is a bit exaggerated, especially if you consider how many of those are Catholic (oooo, but that can be discussed another time and place)...

But even if it were 2 billion, what's the harm in trying to win more? You are aware of what Christ Commissioned us to do? Generally, we don't want you to go to Hell.

And how exactly was/is Jesus/Billy Graham a schizophrenic? Bearing in mind that the word doesn't mean split-personality disorder?

Sorry to spoil your fun, but hey, that's what I like doing :p :)

I dont mock faith, i prefer to mock ignorance. Those two usually go hand in hand. Evangelicals like Billy Graham are the worst, because they follow a derelict without personal thought. Passive christianity isn't problematic, because it usually doesn't conspire ignorance.

Amen.

Jesus speaking to his followers in John 15:18-21 (NIV)

“18. If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19. If you belonged to the world it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20. Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you, also. If they obeyed my teachings, they will obey yours, also. 21. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.

You know, I'm no great fan of Billy Graham, but I have to say that he's far from the worst. Assmunchers like James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and my all-time favorite Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps are way worse, because they're actively evil, while Graham is just, well, a true believer.

I mock people who call themselves christians but have no idea of what christ stood for. I mock people who call themselves christians who worry more about who is sleeping with whom than about the number of poor and hungry people in the world. And most of all I mock people who call themselves christians who are so utterly convinced that the bible is absolute fact that they lose sight of the real and beautiful message Jesus preached, namely, that we should love one another.

Jesus was a righteous dude and deserves all the love and respect in the world. Most christians are fucked up, and they deserve to be mocked for it.

It is. But then again, I'm not a christian in the traditional sense of the word. I don't believe in his divinity. I do believe in his message, a message that has been perverted by organized religion pretty much since it came out of his mouth, because it's a message worth believing in.

But the vast majority of christianity is a plague on humankind, as far as I'm concerned.

There are--considering that there are nearly 2 billion who claim the faith in one form or another around the world, there are bound to be some good ones, and I know a number of them. But they're not necessarily religious people, which is the point I'm trying to make here. Religion and belief in the teachings of christ don't always go hand in hand--in fact, I would argue that these days, you could make a very general rule that states "the louder a person claims his or her faith, the more likely he or she is really a douchebag with no idea what jesus actually taught."

Modern day christianity--the religion part of it--has far more in common with the pharisees than it does with the teachings of Jesus.

Oh, I've studied the teachings of Jesus for most of my 36 years on this earth, so yes, I'm a bit of an expert on what he said. I've also studied a great deal about the history of the various sects of christianity, from the early church before they became the state religion of Rome, through the various schisms, the Arian crisis, the arguments over the divine nature of Jesus, the iconoclasm of Byzantium, the Coptics. I've studied the history of the Catholic Church and their attempts to stamp out heresy, which they defined as anything that threatened their political power. I've studied the Reformation, and the ways in which the various protestant religions became as power-mad and bloodthirsty as the church they claimed to be reforming. I've studied and been a member of a millenialist religion in the past, a group that claimed ot be able to calculate the end days based on prophecy. I'm reading the Gnostic Gospels right now and I've read both the Gospel of Thomas and the Q text. I do it because I find it fascinating as a study of the human condition throughout history.

My reading has also taken me into both archaeological and exegetical examinations of the middle east in relation to the Bible--where it holds up and where it dissipates into myth, even as concerns Jesus.

I have the greatest respect and love for Jesus. I absolutely despise what has been done to his teachings and the way he gets dragged into bullshit by people who claim to follow him.

So if you think you can take me, Chewbaccula--bring it. But be warned--I will eat you for lunch if you think I'm a pushover.

Gotta share...

So I was sitting in the park on 45th (Manhattan, NYC for those of you out there), minding my own business, which was a roast beef hero and an America's Best Iced Coffee.

Anyway, a mid 20s woman comes up, and first speaks to the old guy next to me, then the couple next to him. I heard the conversation, so knew what to expect once she got to me.

Basically, she was handing out literature and trying to get people to go to the Billy Graham Crusade here in NYC this weekend. It was a bit amusing, though, since I befuddled her by being (drum roll....) a practicing Catholic.

(Keep in mind, this isn't meant to be offensive, but just to get her away from me, as I was really grooving on the roast beef...)

"So, why would you not want to hear this great spiritual leader"?
Me: Well, there is no true church except the Church of Rome.
"Church of Rome? I'm not familiar with that one..."
Me: You might have heard of us, we've been around for awhile... Catholics?
"Oh, right! So... that's great, since we believe in the same God and all. Why not come listen to Mr. Graham? He's a great leader in faith."
Me: Well, you see, we have our own called the Pope, and since he's infallible in matters of religious dogma, there's no reason to listen to anyone who's not a Catholic Priest.
"Well, he's a good religious leader and all, that's good. But... why is he infallible"
Me: He was chosen by God.
"But anyone can be chosen by God."
Me: Right, but we *know* he's chosen by God. Mr. Graham may or may not be, but we know that Christ laid the foudation of his Church on Peter. And that's an unbroken line. There've been four in my lifetime, and about 300 since the beginning. You've heard of St. Peter, right? He was the First Pope. History tells us that.
"You mean he was the First Christian Preacher..."
Me: Wouldn't that be John the Baptist?
"Oh... right... hmm. You've given me some things to think about..."
Me: Not at all. Have a nice day.

I've had similar conversations with Jehovah's Witnesses, too. Now, I don't mean to disparage any faith, but if you're going to try to convert me, at least be fluent in what you're trying to convert me to!

Thoughts??
