How can humans stop killing the earth without killing ourselves? Or are we all screwed?

I believe we can pull ourselves back from the cliff in time -- I just don't believe we're going to.

A paradigm shift in human awareness is the only way out that I know of. It's happening, but far too slowly, IMHO. :(

Yes.
We just have to sterilize every human on the planet.
Give it, oh, eighty years, and the problem is solved.

We can't kill the Earth. It'll be fine. We can, however, kill ourselves.

ANd to answer your question; Probably. We're probably all screwed. But it'll be an entertaining show on the way down the drain. :)

Look, it is possible to keep the earth alive and well for many years while keeping the human race alive as well. I will admit that overpopulation may cause problems but the wars will end that problem. Really the concern about the environment is more about making sure mankind does not screw itself over. Because no matter what we do nature will either recover(evolutionary theory) or God will do as he desires anyway(theistic idea).

I dont believe its possible for us mere humans to effectivly kill the Earth...

We'll kill ourselves long before we kill the planet. Either we reform and the environment comes back, or we die out and the environment comes back. Either way, nature wins.

I honestly do not believe that people are so foolish as to believe that we have some sort of control or could affect the earth to even a measurable degree on the grand scale of time. Sure, we have the ability to destroy each other and a number of species of this that and the other thing, but to make a long term change in the earth is so far above our ability it is laughable to think so highly of ourselves.
Frightening people is the most effective way that governments have in controlling their populations and building an entirely false sense of dependence on them. It is as old as man. It is also good for business. It keeps would be scientists well stocked with government grants for "studies" and "research". It serves to bring churches hoards of those in need of salvation. It provides new ailments for drug companies and medical services to expand. It provides additonal markets for insurance companies to jack rates on. Lets not forget how much politicians increase their worth with all the legislation it brings in. It is a never ending game that is recycled time and time again and by the time most figure it out, it is time for them to die of old age!

Humans are invincible! One day we will be able to win this long war with nature. Then we'll show "Mother Nature" who her daddy is.

Summed up beautifully with both of those early comments, basically after that, everyone is just twisting around the same idea.

Literally, we cannot "kill" the Earth. Killing the planet is something we cannot truly affect, because as a race, we cannot survive long enough to both sustain/increase our strain on the world and.. well live. After we pass, the world will simply "heal" in a sense through a slow and long process that will make our time here seem insignificant.

Whether in our time we can cause it to go to such an extreme that it becomes inhospitable for a great many people on it is a potential that I will not live to see I believe, but is a possibility. I have great confidence in the human spirit, regardless of race, religion or creed and believe we will stretch ourselves onward, on this planet, for many long generations to come.

In our own measurable time (on a human scale, not as people living today), I'm sure we'll see the downfall of "Western Society" and watch the rise of other powerful cultures and thoughts prevail. In the transition it may seem stagnant, but will be dynamic once a new system is accepted internationally. This will rise and fall again I'm sure, though in a more creative fashion as the more "attractive" land-masses are taken. Then again, maybe some will open up. Apparently in fifty odd years, according to some, the Bering Straits will be open to walk across, so who knows.. one hundred years from now could prove some interesting times.

The world is doomed, well most of civilisation is, as it will suffer a major nuclear catastrophy soon, when the US, Russia & China, Ukraine, N.Korea, India, Pakistan, Israel, France, Britain(do they have nukes?) and every little tinpot Islamic movement, fire all of their nukes at each other.
The only thing worse than dying in a nuclear war is surviving it, imagine if you will, u and ur family walking around with severe rad poisoning, bits of burnt flesh hanging in strips off ur bodies, and blood flowing out of every orifice.
Sorry but were all screwed, and theres nothing we can do about it.
