Just read this interesting article.

Interstellar Impact! (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050626/ap_on_sc/comet_buster_3)

What do you think will be the results if it has a successful impact? Will it be a large crater or small? Will this have been worth the money?

I wonder if they are doing a practice run for a comet on collision course with Earth. Wouldnt take much to mount a large Nuke WH on that probe.

I would think that has much more to do with the whole project than they would lead us to believe. Last I heard neuclear explosions in space were still banned, so what better way to be ready. You can make estimates on the density and mass of objects in space all day long when working as an astronomer, however, if your goal is to effect a minor change in the trajectory of a massive object such as a comet you will absolutely have to verify your numbers. Actually I think they will find the comet to more dense than they anticipated, creating a crater on the smaller end of their estimate. I hope it works as planned.
