Electronic Music

Okay, so its always going to be fashionable amongst certain groups (sheep for instance) to hate on Techno and any other form of Electronic Music, but the truth is its a vast and incredibly varied genre. From the dance music sounds of Ed Rush, Jeff Mills or The Prodigy to the Industrial angst of Skinny Puppy, Front 242 and (shudder) NIN to the amazing compositions of Ktafterwerk, Tangerine Dream and The ORB and everything in between, Electronic MUsic is here to stay, whether you like it or not.
I wear my bias on my sleeve (and in my signature) and I'm wondering what the rest of you here think of electronic music. Love it, hate it, don't care?
Obviuosly even those who love it have sub-genres that they prefer, and ones they loathe, you can list those in your reply if you so feel. You can give your reasons why you love it or hate it, or you can state your opinion and leave, so long as that opinion is your own.

Techno and stuff makes me a sad panda, and people pointlessly hate on rap without knowing more than the shit they hear on the radio

I don't love or hate techno, but I appreciate, enjoy, and respect it.

The best of any genre genrally doesn't get played on mainstream radio. I hear your pain.

What no mentions of Jean-Michel Jarre, or Wendy Carlos? Devo? Brian Eno? Men Without hats?
Apply Sturgeon's Law. Add in personal relativity, and you've got a big ol' electronic mess. Synth swamp. Techno-bog. Best to just forge your own path, or get stuck knee-deep in ooze and cabling.

Lesse... Krystal Method and Juno Reactor are about the only ones that I know by name and will listen to. That's not to say I won't appreciate other techno artists, however.
I used to listen to the local techno station, but it has since then become more of a "party" station, of which I rather dislike.

How about a definition of "Electronic music"?
Is it music that has
a) been created entirely by the use of synthesizers
or
b) been created with some help by synthesizers?
Mike Oldfield is a renowned, talented musician who has been writing electronic music for 30+years.
But nowadays any ID ten T can whip up an average beat, one bar long and repeating in infinity, and call themselves a musician.
Bah.

I have no problem with electronic music, but I'm not big into. I've though of checking more of it out, though. The only totally electronic music I listen to is Kraftwerk. I find their stuff interesting.

I consider it to be something created iusing mostly electronic intruments and tools (incl. a computer) I hate loops myself, and refuse to use them in my music, though some people do make interestoing and awesome music using them, but those are the same ones that use the loop only as a starting point to be twisted and mangled until the overal piece becomes very much their own.
I've been offered money to put loops from my tracks (I sequence/compose/play everything from scratch) onto sampke CDS, but the thought of anyone else using the bones of my creations to "create" their "music" horrifies me.
Dobbsworld I didn't mention Brian Eno, Wendy Carlos or JMJ because I was being lazy, plus I needed to keep things relatively brief. If I started listing all the geniuses and founders, it would be a long time before that list was finished. Personaly, I love JMJ, but Brian Eno puts me to sleep and Wendy (formerly Wayne) Carlos has gone to far into the side of Electro-Acoustic Music that I'm just not properly wired to appreciate. Rythm, give me rythm (or complex textures and melody)
I came into electronic music first through bands like Skinny Puppy and Throbbing Gristle, then I got heavily invovlved in the rave scene, so my tastes are very much shaped by those experiences. Mind you, one of my all time favourites is Klaus Schultze, who is obviously not of the same gneration or philosophy as the artists I cut my teeth on all those years ago.

I like most kinds of music, its the lyrics that get me mad.
If I could listen to a rap song without hearing a solid string of pointless profanity interspersing a song about killing hookers, I would like rap. The music is often quite good (unless its a looping drum recording).
Thats one reason I like classical :P

I love it. I've always like electronic music, but since I've started raving I really like that basic as fuck electronic bass and bad singing, I listen to it all the time now.
Gabba is still a bit eh with me, but when you're peaking there's nothing better to have a stomp to for a little while. But I quickly go back to happy hardcore stuff and be all lovey and dancey.
And my Hearbeatz just like a drum and my heartbeatz, it goes boom boom boom *dances

Hehehe, EEyore, excellent track. I prefer Frequenzberater and Anthony Rother myself. Electro rules. I switch my loyalties between (old skool detroit) techno and Electro, depending on my mood. Catnip, Legowelt and Bangkok Impact are amongst my faves, though Bangkok Impact and Catnip describe themselves as Electro-Disco.

Sorry, but I just don't care enough about the genre to catalog the pigeon holes.
Techno or not, trance bites the big one. It's OK for kiddies (and 30-something professionals trying to recapture lost youth) popping copious amounts of psychoactive drugs, but to me it's like bad videogame muzak. I've been to a couple of raves, and was bored shitless every time...

Yeah, I dig out my vinyls of Bombers, Cars and Me, I Disconnect From You at least once a week. The man was/is a genius. Ranks up there with Kraftwerk and Wendy Carlos for firmly entrenching Electronic Music in the popular psyche.
As far as raves g0 (as mentioned them in an earlier post) IMHO, they no longer exist. It was a time and place, impossible to recapture. Mind you, I started going back in 93, so I have HUGE bias in that department. Raves, as commonly perceived and misperceived, only ever happened between about 89 and 96, had to be in a warehouse or some other, preferably illegal, venue (like Cherry Beach in Toronto) You'd probably enjoy certain club nights, especially ones featuring (based on your posts) Electro and pure Techno (the bestTechno being American[detroit] English and Swedish) Generaly an older crowd (well, it's happening in a licensed establishment afterall) with *usually* far less chemical type drugs. A good house DJ (Kevin Yost, Frankie Knuckles) can be a real treat too, for people not especially into the entire scene.
I sometimes wonder at my continued invovlment in the scene, being 31 years old...am I just trying desperately to hang onto/relive my youth? I ask myself. But since I'm actually making the music, other Djs are actualy playing my records and even occasionaly getting paid (not all that much BTW) to play it live @ parties, its a healthy creative outlet, rather than a desperate grabbing at times from my mis-spent youth. There will, I'm certain, come a time when the party side of things will just become to ridiculous for me to continue going to them...probably when I''m 70 or 80 and to arthritic to dance anymore ;)
