Have you ever heard of Mecca-Cola?

I had heard about the idea of creating a coca-cola-like soft drink when I was back in Germany, but I only today found some cans of Mecca-Cola (http://www.mecca-cola.com) in an Asian store here in Dublin.

It does taste a little more like Pepsi, though, but I like it, and I like the idea of 20% of revenue going to charities (half to Muslim charities, half to others)...

It's a really nice idea - i think one of the original aims behind it was also to use something which is so widely regarded as a symbol of globalisation and fat profits and turn it on its head. Haven't tasted it myself, but a question to anyone who'd know - is it Hallal?

My god I dont know whats more shocking. That there is a cola giving half there money to Muslim charities or that there are ASIAN's running convenience stores in Dublin! Is there a mass conspiracy of Asians taking over all our convenience stores on earth?! I thought the US was the only country being overrun by these overcharging minions.

Erm... what's Hallal?

simple translation is "allowed" / "permissible"

as opposed to "haram" which is not allowed. for ex, pork is haram.

other meat products are also haram unless the meat is obtained by cutting the head in an islamic ritual by a muslim. IIRC, ya have to say a verse b4 cutting the head and voila the meat become halal. :D

"mecca cola" is just a reaction to the "imperialistic western infidel" coca cola and it sucks in taste.

Actually, I have heard that the jewish kosher meat is indeed halal for muslims to eat, although this is not a shared universal opinion.

You have to realise that muslims are not monolithic and range across the whole spectrum in issues like these.

It's not a conveniece store, rather a speciality shop. Groceries and all that. There are several in Dublin, and I enjoy shopping there. There's always so much you never heard of before, fruits, vegetables, spices... There are similar shops by Russians and Eastern Europeans, and some Caribbean shops. You have to know where to look, though.

It's true, Hallal and Kosher methods of slaughter are virtually identical and it's permissable for a Muslim to eat Kosher ment, but not for a Jew to eat Hallal meat because one of the conditions of the Jewish laws is that the slaughter has to be carried out by a Jew.

Like Hallal, technically Kosher only applies to meat, HOWEVER many of the artificial additive in products are animal based, therefore cannot be used in kosher products.

yes kosher applies to meat mainly, but it is also with, milk,
you may not drink the milk with a dish of meat.

I didnt mean that hallal is not kosher, but it is not the same as kosher.

but really come on lighten up with the kosher, they cant eat anything?

Cola is just cola to me, whatever the brand. I'll just buy whatever is cheapest and is sold in the shop closest to my house. I hardly ever drink it anyway.

I kinda ends up like that - it gets bloody annoying, you can only eat things that are on the approved list or which have a stamp on them. I'm having to get used to it now I'm back in the UK.

On the other hand, it does make for some exploitative/hilarious 'kosher' objects which overly neurotic and ignorant people buy...kosher toilet paper, kosher water, etc etc
