That's right. Oklahoma and Arkansas, not California, is the root of the 'fruits and nuts' in CA to this day.

Why, you ask?

Simple!

In the Great Depression, over a third of a million Okies and Arkies immigrated to California seeking economic opportunities and suntans. They found both, of course, and have been living and multiplying in CA ever since.

And it goes without saying that Arkansas and Oklahoma are more nutty than California, especially back in the 30's. Now of course, AK and OK are more balanced and CA has all their exported nuts.

My theory is 100% infallible. CA is innocent. It's the Midwest's fault.

Ah, but you neglect to account for the many times more that went there during the 60's for safe haven to smoke dope, get their big break and hide in universities. Granted many moved north some, but they are the root of California's woes, and they came from out of the woodwork not just the dust bowl.

Arkansas and Oklahoma are not midwestern states. Arkansas is *very* southern. Oklahoma can be classified as either a southern state or southern plains state. There is nothing midwestern about it.

It's a historical term. The area we now call the midwest was just the west before the Louisiana Purchase. After that, what was once the west became the middle west and land on the other side of the Mississippi became the far west. The far west lable didn't stick (since we kept moving west), but the term midwest did.

It's sort of like Asia and the whole mid east thing. The middle east used to be called the near east. The middle east was India and the rest of south Asia, and the far east was China, Japan etc. But in WWII the British Foreign Service moved its middle east headquarters from India to the near east. Ever since then the near east has been called the mideast.
