Insomnia

Anyone else have it? I tend to suffer from a more mild version of it, where I normally can't fall asleep before 2 or 3 a.m..10:30, if I'm really bloody tired. Whenever I'm sleep deprived, songs get stuck in my head insanely easily. Just mention a few lyrics from a song I know, and it'll get stuck. Right now, "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" is in my head, and before that, the damnable new song by Backstreet Boys. *twitches* What do you lot do when you can't sleep? How do you busy yourselves?

I'm still up at 2:25 I wonder if I should just stay up all night so I have to go to sleep at a decent hour.

Im an insomniac. Whenever I do dream I have lucid dreams or falling dreams and I end up wishing I was awake. Apparently im anxious.

I stay up late if I want to or need to move music around on my comp. (To WMP and my iRiver)

Most of the time, I can sleep as long as I'm tired enough. That doesn't happen until very late however. Sometimes however, I lie there trying to sleep and experience something right in between dreams and hallucinations, (combined with that my short term memory doesn't work as it should and I can't think clearly, since I'm half-asleep, so it can take an hour or two before I realize what's going on after "waking up" from yet another one of those short semi-dreams) which make me unable to fall asleep. If that happens, the only thing I can do is to get up and stay awake for a couple of hours and then either keep staying awake or try again.

The latter happened the last night, in a somewhat mild form. I kept turning around in my bed all the time, unable to relax completely and truly fall asleep, or think especially clearly for that matter, while what was going on in my head was an uncontrollable gigantic mess of images and events that I found myself visually experiencing, floating together. (I remember a few random fragments in extremely bad detail) I did finally fall asleep however.

The latter also happened this morning, after waking up and trying to fall asleep again. So I simply gave up trying to sleep until 14:00-15:00 (I think I fell asleep sometime around 6:00-7:00. Now it's 10:25)

If I (simply) don't get tired at night, I stay in front of my computer until I can't think clearly enough to type fully coherent text, (without spending an hour or so correcting it) or concentrate on programming or gaming anymore. Then I read instead, until I cannot remember what I'm reading anymore. Then I can finally fall asleep.

Either that or I have some fun while watching a hentai, (that is more-than-slightly-holy according to my belief, because I SAY SO! Mwahahahaaa!) after which I usually get tired and find it easier to relax quicker.

But then, if I get excited enough, (happens mostly when programming and getting hyper over some rapid progress combined with the pure awesomeness of my fluffalicious code ;)) I can often sit in front of my computer throughout the night and morning without getting tired, without even needing any caffeine to do so.

I have chronic Insomnia, and I am lucky if I get one hour of sleep each 24 hours, and even that is rare. it does not matter what I have been doing, how tired I am, etc. The joy of it is I can get more done in a a week because of it, but it tends to drive others crazy when I call them at 330Am

I've had those weird semi dreaming states last for over a week before. Not fun.

It takes at least a few days of being up nonstop without any rest for me to be unable to coherently type. My ability to type whilst nearly asleep is kinda scary.

I hate hentai/anime, so that's out. ..Did you just make up the word "fluffalicious"..?*blinks*

It's now almost 4 a.m...m'thinks I'm gonna try to sleep. My internal clock's been screwed to hell since last summer when I went through 3 vastly different timezones in less than a month. I think it committed suicide.

Edit: LG..This just further proves you're even less normal than I am. Which would scare my friends, and impresses me.

I only sleep about six hours once every three days or so. I simply don't need it. I don't know what kind of freak that makes me, but I think we already established that I'm already several types of freaks all rolled up in one. :)

WHich is for the best because I have a lot to do.

My internal clock is screwed up as well. The main problem is that every day is a few hours too short for me, which causes quite a few problems, as I simply cannot stay adjusted to a set, "normal" time. As a result, I always get too little sleep when having to get up early, and when allowed to sleep freely, my sleeping pattern fluctates greatly at varying speed.

I'm currently having more problems staying asleep than falling asleep, but when I had trouble falling asleep, I'd start daydreaming in the hopes that it would turn into a dream, hence I'd be asleep. It usually took a while, but it worked.

I don't suffer from insomnia, but my internal clock's bonkers.

My day lasts about 20-22 hours instead of the normal 16-18. But I need just as much sleep as everyone else. It's a bitch when I work, as my sleep rythm naturally shifts just about 24 hours in a workweek. Usually I look like I'm made of wax every 3 weeks. Then I'll spend a weekend in bed, often with a low fever from exhaustion. After that I'm good to go for another 3 weeks before collapsing.

I really wish I could find a decent 3 shift job somewhere. I seem to be designed just for such a job.. But alas.

Anyway, I try not to work more than 8 months a year and live off the savings, and right now I'm enjoying my summer without work :)

Ambien, available by prescription. For when you really need sleep.

This (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8889107#post8889107) thread I started ages ago has some good ideas to help insomnia.

A combination of Ambien (http://www.ambien.com/index.asp?&PALT=&AMPM=6/25/2005%2010:21:23&Detection=True&OriginalHTTP_REFERER=), Xanax, and/or Tequila (100% agave only).

Then put on my Bose headphones and listen to music in the dark -- usually with at least one purring cat laying on me.

I'm similar. I've always been a bit of a night owl. Even when totally exhausted I find it difficult to go to bed before midnight. If I go to bed before that I usually toss and turn and then don't sleep until 3 or 4am.
Force of habit I guess. I can't wake up early in the morning either. I could probably count on one hand the times I've woken feeling really refreshed and energetic. I start feeling more and more lively as the day goes along. I can't go to the gym in the morning. I just feel like crap.

I even cut out caffiene and chocolate for a few months to see if that would help. Which it did for a little while but then the not being able to get to sleep until 1/2 am started up again. I've been like this since I can remember. Makes it a pain in the butt having to get up at 6.15am like what I do nowadays. I feel like crap for most of the day then start feeling more and more energetic and wanting to exercise towards the end.

What's kinda odd is that when I moved here to HK it continued. I had hoped that moving to a timezone 4 hours behind the one I grew up in, my body might get tired at 9 or 10pm and I'd be waking up at 6am. A perfect time really. But no, still went throught until 2am before feeling really sleepy. So it's not just a body clock thing. It's tied to the day/night really. I guess my body just doesn't want to shut down until 6 hours after sunset. And start up until 2 hours after sunrise.

:( Insomnia...where to begin? I've suffered from this forever. Those that never have had it...just don't get it! :p I've always been a night owl...but which came first: night owl/insomnia or chicken/egg? I currently work at a mill doing 10 hour shifts of grueling labor. Up at 4 AM five days a week...yet, for a week per month, I'm unable to get to sleep until 2/3. This is actually very dangerous as by the 3rd day I'm loopy...and working around equipment that like to eat humans! I've tried all the drugs, meditation techniques, rythm & habit procedures...heck I've lost sleep trying to deal with insomnia! Nothing seems to work for me...If you feel the same way, you are not alone.

My doctor is paranoid and only will prescribe eight ambien a month. Which means I sleep twice a week.
And I don't find sleeping with cats conducive to sleep. Possibly because as many as six will get in bed with me, and at least one will always decide my face is a comfy spot.

It's understandable that many don't want to take a sleeping medication like Ambien. Consider though, the cost of and risk of medication (low) versus the effects of going without adequate sleep.

Taking an occasional Ambien is better than sleep deprivation. I don't notice any side effects from using it occasionally. It doesn't mix well with alcohol for me, though.

Whilst I only have 2, one always tries to sleep on my head, so I sympathise.

I've had all the pussy jokes, they are never funny.
