Political Correctness

I hear a lot of people complain about being forced to be "PC", now while I am no fan of it (How the hell will eliminating any reference to the word 'negro' end racism?) these people just really piss me off.
Case in point-

The “ethical bank” as the Co-operative Bank likes to call itself is forcing a Christian lobby group to close its account because the Co-op doesn’t like its bold and “politically incorrect” stance on same sex relationships.

(Just so you know, they reference political correctness four times in the article- nice to see they've got such great writers at the BNP HQ)

What annoys me is that these people aren't 'politically incorrect'- they're intolerant shits. Why are we trying to protect their rights when they could care less about ours?
It seems to me that all these people on the far right who call themselves "pro freedom of speech" should really be called "pro racism".

Sorry if this isn't well set out, I'm tired and slightly annoyed

I view political correctness as a form os censorship. This allowed, but not that. A term is only as offensive as a person allows it to be. If you do nto react to the term then it will lose its impact and quite possibly its use.

Well, I wouldn't justify reducing free speech because some people use it to talk bollocks, but I agree that people with "politically incorrect" stances on relationships should just butt out and worry about their own relationships.

"Political correctness" is a dead term, loosely defined at it's origin it has been worn down to its nub by over and mis-use to end up as meaningless chatter by people who want the easy road to outrage...

It's on the checklist of things that indicate the person talking has nothing really to say...

I consider it a form of censorship, too. I frequently find myself tempted to just spout various racial slurs and anti-whatever insults, but then, I really, sincerely wouldn't want to offend anyone.

I completely agree. Another's social relationship(s) are no one else's business.

Untill the Un has legislation that would revoke the old resolution, while replacing the old chemical weapons resolution, you must vote no! Otherwise for that breif period chemical weapons are legal.

I am afraid you are mistaken, there is no discussion about resolutions.

I've never really seen it as a banning of speech, but rather ironically a politically correct way of call someone an intolerant bigot. You know, instead of saying "That's a damn ignorant thing for you to say, kinda bigoted of you" you say 'that is politically incorrect.' No more soft sell-call an ass an ass, meeting them halfway didn't work.

Just occoured to me, so that's probably not the best way to look at it yet, but that should get a ball or two rolling...

I do not mean to be so blunt, but do you mean a 'Mr. Rogers' version of speech? I have a tendency to be rather direct in situations, so I am called that all the time.

I'll do it in an example. I was trying to explain to my brother why what he had in made in a game was a racial caracature and tangentially racist in a way. He was infuriated because he did not consider himself to be racist, which is more or less true and I certainly wasn't trying to call him racist. But he couldn't get past the notion that I might be calling him racist. So how do you explain how something might be read to someone without saying they're a racist? You invent a term.

And then it gets out of hand and used to characterize those who said it in a different way.

That's my half-ass off the top of my head notion of the moment on pc, but now it is nothing more than generic crap people parrot out when they know they should be against something (party line) but don't know why.

I propose a simple change to this matter ...

No longer will it be called "PC" ... it shall be called "PPC".

Publicly Politically Correct.

Nobody is forced to be PC in their homes or private life, only in public.

So .... be PPC because it's common curteousy. Be PC if you choose.

Sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like criticism... by "this" I meant that I agreed with you, but then i added the rest when I realized that a one word reply didn't really add much to the discussion... much like this post :p

How about the anti-fishing group that tried to forace Fishkill, NY to change it's name to "Fishlive". "Kill" is Dutch for creek, i.e. Fishcreek

The term Political Corectness came about in the early 80's and was used in the right wing media especially in the UK to denegrate any kind of developement regarding equal opportunities. Unfortunately there were a number of people who worked in positions of power in local government who took concepts of what is and is not acceptable social behaviour and language to extreems.

Why did they do this? White middleclass liberal guilt in the main and a complete lack of understanding about difference and culture. This left any kind of step forward open to abuse from the right wing media. You only have to look at old copies of the London Evening Standard or The Daily Mail to see what I mean.

The Co-op Bank was one of the front runners in taking on issues of equality in the work place and has had a policy for community group banking that states quite clearly it will not support bigotry in any form. This was why they closed this groups account.

I think it is a very brave financial institution that turns away business on principles. Because of their stand I am going to change my account to them. :D

Political Correctness is a subtle form of mind control if you're enough of a sheeple to submit to it.
