What makes the Natalee Holloway case so special?

Not trying to sound heartless or anything, I sympathize with any family that has a member missing, but out of the hundreds that are missing in the US alone, what makes her special enough to garner the attention of National Media? When I watch the news, I want to see NEWS, not the legal proceedings going on in Aruba. For god sakes, let the authorities in Aruba do their job without the Media putting intense pressure on them.

Natalee (what a silly spelling) who?

She's a girl that went missing in Aruba, most likely dead. The media here in the US are going bonkers over her.

she's white and her case involves the usual senior trip taken by thousands of schools all over the country

Yeah that makes her unique alright. This is exactly why I'm getting BBC.

its a mystery how a girl can utterly vanish from such a small island. so it fascinates us

and its a tropical paradise where reporters can work 10 minutes a day then spend the rest of the time drinking and gambling. so they all want to be there.

1. She's blonde, white, and attractive.
2. She was on a trip that thousands of people go on each year.
3. She was in Aruba.

Her parents have attorneys, and all kinds of investigators, other officials, etc., pressuring the gov't down there. It seems to me, the family must be quite wealthy. They have hired all kinds of experts, etc. I think it's due to the refusal of the family to stop pushing the media. Her parents said as much in an interview.

She is from some Birmingham suburb, all exceedingly wealthy. Mountain Brook for her.

Exactly, this is the kind of glorifying crap I can't stand. What about all the people missing in Africa right now? Or the people who are still MIA after the tsunami?

Do you think the family wants all this media attention? Did anyone ask them?

Same kinda crap with Terry Shiavo. The media found a cow and they milked it...Idiots...

PS: I send my regards to all who are aiding in the search. I send a big F.U. in the direction of mass media.

She was on a senior trip (just a drunken orgy, really) in Aruba and ends up dead. It's the mystery in paradise that keeps this going. I doubt anyone would care if she vanished in Siberia.

I still like the theory that she was kidnapped and sold as a sex slave in Venezuela. It's the only really good explanation... and it's happened before.

Otherwise, SOME clue/someone would have spilled the beans as to where her remains are.

2....
#1 she is wealthy.. in a paradise island (young/rich white female went to drink alcohol and party with the black locals)

#2 the US media showed local black people as suspects...

young white Female likely raped by foreign blacks...THATs is the ticket...thats what all fuss is about...enough to break a Media Orgy never seen in Aruba...

other tourist have disappeared before...and will still disappear...just don't expect the US media to make a show if its not a US white female likely raped by dark guys.

First of all, you dont have to be wealthy to go to Aruba, a semi-modern tourist destination. High school grad trips go there all the time, my cousins go their regularly, and their by no means wealthy.

Second, I dont think any of the suspect have been black. There is the primary European son and father, and two ?Indian? men (Brown complection, but not black-African)

Its becuase a sexy white girl went missing, and sex sells.

He might be refering to the two friends of the boy. The father and son are arubans.

The fact the father is a judge kind of suggests they are closing in.....

Here we have a major vacation spot, which people seem to think is beautiful (I can't stand the idea of it, give me cold and rainy anyday). So there is the element of hell in paradise (horrible things go wrong in a wonderful place).
Then, we have this involvement with some high legal whatsit, so there's elements of the classic conspiracy/cover-up (and there is nothing America seems to like more than a good cover up story). Next, there is the bizarre little details that keep turning up.
Finally, Natalee (Is that really how her name is spelled?) is an empathetic victim. Most people can look at her and say, "damn that could have been me." Well, except the men, but that's just 48% of the world's population. In this case, its the fact that there is nothing majorly different about her that makes the case so interesting.

Edit: H. N. Fiddlebottoms VIII would like to apologize for a misconception that may have been inferred from this post. It has just come to H. N. Fiddlebottoms VIII attention that there are some men who might drive off whilst necking with an aruban, and I apologize for any alienation they might have felt when they (and their aruban-related desires) were ignored by someone from the otherside of the Internet.

I'm sorry, I try not to blind myself to the obvious. She was rich and white, and the general situation really bolstered the news set up. When was the last time a black person made the news, not for a murder/rape/robbery? When was the last time a black woman made the news for disappearing?
