A more bitter NS?

Is it just me, or are people more bitter than usual today? The pools of sarcasm have soaked my shoes through, and even I am fighting the urge to tell everyone to go and take a big flying leap...what the heck is going on? I've never seen so many personal attacks and just plain angriness among our regular posters...

Actually, I'm feeling quite good. I think that's because I haven't entered a single political debate. I feel this would be a good opportunity to plug my website's forum where we never have political debates, but no-one would join so I can't be bothered.

we're humans, and humans get angry. I know that I have, several times, typed things that i'd never say to anyone... these were things that came to mind first and BAM I typed them... upon review, I felt ashamed and issued apologies (or hope I did) or explained tht i was not nearly as worked up as my post might have made me seem.

also, we can't see each other... so in-person accepted modes of behavior go out the window. there is no threat whatsoever to saying what's on your mind, other than being banned... nobody's gonna punch you in the nose, for instance.

Telling me I have PMT is not a good thing. It suggests that I am not in control of my emotions, and that all of this is in my head, which just pisses me off even more:)

And the worse thing is, the ones who have pushed me over the edge today are posters I usually enjoy debating with. I wonder if I'm just at the end of my NS rope.

24th of June is midsummer fest in most of Northern Europe. Of course, it's centuries old tradition that we act bitchy in internet forums, but recently our communist governments decided we have to be bitter towards other nations the whole summer long. This is the day our bitchyness is in its height. Just bend over. It wont hurt a bit.

And as for not taking people on the internet seriously...okay, fine, random people, whatever. But on a forum like this, you end up making connections with people. Are they quite as immediate as the connections you make face to face in RL? For some people, very much so...for others, pretty close, and for other others, not at all. I'm in the middle. I DO give a shit about posters I have a 'history' with, and who I've gotten to 'know'. Which is why I get pissed when some of them turn out to be phoneys, or when they suddenly go insane. SHOULD I give a shit? Ah fuck, don't talk to me about should...I'll do what I do, and that's it. No shoulds.

If I were drinking gin right now (a bad idea. I no longer drink, but I went on a binge last weekend, after 6 years of sobriety, so I can at least remember what I get like...not pretty) this above rant would be the precursor to a sobbing, "Aw, I love you guys"...

...but since I'm not, forget it:).

Ah ... well that's problem one, ain't it? The internet is a sea of anonymity. Any one person can claim any number of things and be pretty much whomever they want to be. In the long run does it matter? To some, I suppose it does.

But it shouldn't.

If you talk to someone on the internet for years and you develop a "friendship" with them and then come to find out you've been talking to a very complex Eliza program or some 12 year old kid locked up in juvie, then who is really to blame?

It's the internet. A :fluffle: will never replace a real human hug. Devoting yourself to getting that close to someone you have never seen, smelled, touched, or experienced the simple act of sitting on the couch next to them and chuckling at the same silly commercial on TV is your fault and yours alone.

There were more "clubs" and "bars" and general fun. People falling in love. Shrines and drama of the social type. Then I started noticing more and more anger threads, more hurtful comments outside of social drama - poltical angst, current event wars, etc. I think that this now has just become the norm as most of the fun threads have been marked "spam".

I've been on NS longer than anyone on this thread. Don't let my start date on this nation fool you. I assure you that the political threads have always been here, right from the start. Back when we use to have to wait 20 minutes if we were lucky to load the fourms before we moved to jolt.

The only real difference I see personally, is that we have lost some really good people over that time, some really bad people too.. and gained some really cool new people and gained some really not so cool people. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Do you not think I include myself in that? I can claim anything I like, too.

Okay, I've been beating around the bush on this one long enough. Yeah, you can go ahead and claim to be anything you want. Any of us can. But you know what? A surprising number of us DON'T BOTHER PRETENDING. Oh, there may be omissions, slight fabrications I'm sure...but down and out bullshit? What's the fucking point? And don't give me that, "It's your fault it you believed it". No. You fucking lied, and no one trusts you anymore. Period. Fun and games? Fuck that. Not when you use your lies to give your arguments some sort of validity. Not when you pretend to have the slightest idea of what it is to be part of a group you only understand on a book level. No. Not fun and games, because I didn't go into the roleplay forum, I came here. So don't get surprised when people want nothing to do with you from now on. I give everyone a chance...but you lie to me, you're done. If that doesn't matter to you, that's fine. It matters to me, and I don't need your blessing, because I do actually give a shit about some of the people here, face to face meetings or not.

Very bitter and less tolerant. I agree.

I seem to recall an earlier slump, around the time Zep and Steph left...though I didn't see it as so negative at the time, I also wasn't involved in the same threads. So I'm sure some of us see it now, and others don't and it will cycle.

Ah .. well unfortunately neither of us have any real information to go on, now do we? First, you'd have to define "real indian" and that varies from tribe to tribe.

I don't wear feathers in my hair nor wear the trappings (except the haircut) of tribal life, but our traditions and way of life were stripped away by the Spaniards three hundred years before your tribe ever even dreamed of a white man.

We don't have special Indian ID Cards, we don't have a real "Nation", we don't have casinos (those were given up in place of recognition by the Republic of Texas and, subsequently, the State of Texas), we rejected the Dawes Rolls, and there aren't any pure bloods left among any of the Caddo tribes.

So ... shrug. Wouldn't be much of a duel. I'll just concede it now. If it makes you feel better to think me not Native, then you go right ahead. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

The forums have been like this ever since 9/11 if only everyday could be just like the day after 9/11. When what government party you were in did not matter, people helped each other out and did not insult each other or argue who's fault it was or fight over who is the best president. If only everyday could be like that minus the deaths and moruning.

Two years ago, the Blue Man Group had an amazing show that ended with footage of papers and everything else falling from the WTC on 9/11. I cried all over again. People forget so quickly. If only people treated each other respectfully, that would be a great step in the right direction.

However, the mourning itself is what creates this feeling of brotherhood, unfortunately. Everyone comes together in a crisis, but it seems like it can't be done without a tragedy. :(

I've seen a couple of regular posters just tearing into one another, and I felt decidedly under attack earlier, so I fucked off for a while...and then I realised that I was in a pissy mood because of it, and I needed to come back here and let it out so I could go home and not be a total bitch.
There really is no need to get upset. One needs to have thick skin to debate here, as there are those that would prey upon the more sensitive ones.

Sometimes people will take cheap shots at me, and sometimes I will be a little less kind in my reply, but all in all, I really don't care if they have a problem with my opinion. If they want to help me to understand their side of the story, they can do so by presenting themselves and their arguments in an honest manner. Anything less is uncivilized.

You should perhaps consider that some posters do have deep seated problems especially on the emotional level. Some are full of hate and anger and use these boards to release it, even though at the end of the day, they still own it. Hopefully, they will find a solution to their problems and learn to enjoy life.

Cheer up, and keep up the good work. I do for the most part enjoy reading your posts.

For the most part, I do agree that it is very difficult to do so. However, there have been times on here where another poster and I disagreed, and yet through honest discussion, and without resorting to personal attacks, we have been able to have agreement in principle. Those moments are special and foster a better understanding of others.

As I stated in an earlier post on this thread, some people are full of anger and hate and take their frustrations out on others. Through past unpleasant experiences with those emotions, I have learned that some things are just not worth getting myself into such a state. If some people want to foist their ego on others (which does nothing to prove their point), then so be it, but if I am not receptive, I don't have to play.

Many people will post their opinions on here, but at the end of the day, it is cold, hard facts that tell the truth. That is all anyone can hope for in an "honest" debate?

The only bitter thread I've seen on NS today is Eutrusca's... And I've even forgotten its topic!

This is because I was busy on MSN earlier today (11 AM to 3:25 PM), did the dishes, played some songs on my dad's acoustic guitar (Ever Fallen In Love, God Save The Queen, Anarchy In The U.K., quite poorly, I might add), added to my already massive nation on Civilization 3: Conquests, flew some Bf-109's on Aces High II, and just finished a long sitting of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

If I would've been posting on NS all day (as usual), I probably would've been bitter. But today? Not so much.

Sinuhue, I wouldn't take it personally. There may even be an astrological phenomenon at work here. My mother, who's into this kind of thing, tells me that lotsa folks get a kind of PMS when Mercury is in retrograde -- meaning that it appears, every so often, to be moving in reverse through the astrological field.

Of course, I think astrology is beyond crap, but it's one possibility.

Another is that summer means that it's hotter and muggier and therefore meteorologically more irritating than usual. Add to that the boredom of the mass contingent of student voices of all grade/collegiate levels on summer holiday, and you've got a mixture guaranteed to cause more than the average amount of bitchiness.

I myself just unloaded on Texas (or as I called it, Tex-Ass) in another thread simply because this summer is the second anniversary of my Great Tex-Ass Mistake.

So it's just a part of life's innumerable cycles. As my mother would say: bless it and release it.
