Salsa Or Swing?

Hi all!

I have been trying to decide which type of dance I like more; swing or salsa. Which is your favourite, and why?

(If you do other types of dance, go ahead with those, too. I'm curious about all of them!)

I really enjoy all the sumptous moves in salsa, but swing has really fun moves, too. Although... I did drop my teacher the first time I tried to do a slide in swing (And the whole class was watching! How embarassing...).

Well salsa, for us here, is a green dressing rather like parsely, and swing is a non monogamous but married lifestyle. So swing sounds much more interesting (There is nothing very interesting about parsely).

Swing :p

I'd have more fun. I enjoy watching swing dancers more than salsa. Salsa's cool too though.

I picked swing over salsa, but I enjoy ballroom dance, too. There's just not a lot of occasion to waltz, but I like to do it. (I also find watching those competitions a bit odd, too -- they're just a little too overtheatrical for my tastes)

I've only danced east coast swing; don't know much about the other styles. I just love that you can dance to such a wide variety of music with swing. It's probably a good thing I was born when I was, beacuse if I was young during the 1940s, I'd have been out all night.

Salsa is okay, but a little Latin music goes a long way for me. And the whole 'attitude' with tango is a little much for my tastes.

Really? I've only ever done West Coast (Despite living a stone's throw from the Atlantic).

Tell me, is there an East Coast move that starts in a cuddle but where the gal unwinds and the two end up side by side before coming back together? I have always wanted to learn how to do it, but my teacher tells me that it does not exist in West Coast Swing.

I took 5 years of Hip-Hop dance classes so naturally it's my favourite.

Love Hip-Hop, though I suck in it. I do ballet, and thats a close second, especially since I get to do all the cool jumps, lifts, and turns (I'm a guy, thats why. All females do is go on pointe, which I do in tap anyways :D)

alright. you got me started.

dancing is my passion. my mother was a professional dancer, so she got me started dancing young. i've done almost everything.
ballet, tap, jazz, folklorico, flamenco, modern, hip hop, street jazz, and i've trained for competitive ballroom and latin. but i didn't have the time to compete, so i never went.

however, i've gotten big on the lindyhop scene. lindyhop is a kind of swing dancing, do searches on it, you can find out about it. but i'm in love with it.
i go dancing constantly, to exchanges and everything, and it's become something i'm so head-over-heels for.
so swing is good, but lindyhop is better.
to get an idea of what lindyhop looks like, you can watch this short video:

my friend martin shot it with his digital camera's movie setting, so its not uberqualitied... but it's good. this was at an exchange/workshop that we went to. the instructors came out and danced a song during one of the dances. yay lindyfest 05.

Very cool video! I wish I could do that! Did I notice a guy doing an American Spin in the first couple? I find that one not so hot thing about Swing is that the girls get to do all the fun stuff. It would be really neat to do something like that.

Alright...

I cast my vote, finally. I ended up going for Latin over Swing for a combination of reasons, but mostly because it was the first one on the list. I love both! I am, however, writing a novel (I tend to begin them and never finish, as testified by the forty unfinished files on my comp. But this one is going to get done, honey, I promise!) that involves some Latin Dancing, so that is why I voted for it. At this very moment, though, I am better at swing than salsa, so on a dancefloor I might gravitate more towards swing.

The debate is still open, though. I find your comments really interesting, and since I am still quite on the fence, I could use more convincing either way.

I can't beleive no one has said this yet:

IT DON'T MEAN A THING IF IT AIN'T GOT THAT SWING!!!!
