ok i'm about to get a new laptop, and the immediate response when i told a couple of my friends was to yell "LANPARTY!" :D
which is cool....
...but i don't have & have never played either Counter Srike: Source, nor Half Life 2 (lanparty games of choice for them)
so i have a few (hopefully) easily-asnwered questions to all the geeks and game players out there:
1. what is the difference between Counterstrike and CS: Source?
2. i've heard CS: Source is free - any idea where i can download it (i tried googling, obviously, but i seemed to have to pay for everything :( )
3. i've heard CS: S comes bundled with Half Life 2. true?
4. are either of these worth getting? (expecting a resounding "yes!" ;))
and 5. lanparties sound cool. are they? and any other good multiplayer games y'all like? i'm more of a strategy game player, myself, so the last FPS i played was either UT04 (tho seem to have lost the cd  ) or Halo2

1. Source has better graphics. And no shield. Thats about it.
2. You must pay for CSS
3. CSS does come bundled with Half Life 2
4. Meh. If you have friends who play it, im sure it would be fine. If its a decent computer, I would suggest buying Battlefield 2, personally.
5. They are great fun.

Only if you don't get pissed before you set the stuff up. That doesn't help.

glad to be of help....
Go out and buy any game you want, and stop waisting time downloading. Simple solution!
I'm old school...
Total Anilation
Command and Conqour
Quake (Far far far better than any sequals)
Doom
Civ 2
and if you friends play CS, just tell them to grow up, it's wank off material for lonley spotty teens

Played Instagib at a Lan party when drunk once ..... didn't do so well, your reaction times get shot to hell.

1. CS: Source is just the newer version, based on the physics of HL2, whereby the original is based on the physics of the original HL.
2. It's free to download if you already have a Steam account, i.e. you have to buy another game.
3. Yes.
4. Yes.
5. They can be most times. I've been to a few with sore looser jackasses who can't take a loss and accused me of cheating when they could see my damn screen! (I wasn't). You've actually listed the three best games to play (CS, UT2K4 and Halo/Halo 2).
All and all, have fun!

CS is fun... if you get a large enough group of people together.
BUt overall, HL2 Deathmatch is better. PHYSICS. @.@

I too, am more of a strategy game player, but I play a mean game of Halo/Halo2 as well. My friends and I hook up for a LAN party every week. Playing Halo2 until just before dawn.
Playing games online is just such an utterly different experience, I can barely compare it to my own. I played Guilty Gear x2 religously for about 2 years before a friend showed my the X-box version of the game, which has an online component.
The result I found was this; I am a very respectful player, even to a fault. I will actually allow dizzied opponents to regain control before I attack them. I don't know why, it just seems fair. There are people out there who are marvelously good players, who know the combo system by heart and can eat me alive, but still...I enjoy what I'm capable of, even if I don't always win. I like to earn the respect of those whom I fight against, perhaps more than I care about winning.
Anyway, I would give my right arm and my first born to the person who can make Dynasty Tactics 2 an online game. ;) Same goes for Dynasty Empires, and most of the Nippon Ichi strategy games.
But not FFtactics...I would just dominate everyone, it would be no fun. ;)

Don't forget about Starcraft. Not only can you beat up your friends in a regular 3v3, but you can own them in a map settings game of Diplomacy starcraft style if you wish. The possibilites are only limited by the ammount of maps you have.
