I made it to Alexandria. Sitting here at my roomie's puter because my wifi PCMCIA card for my old-ass ThinkPad died. *argh*
It's odd. This area of Virginia looks just like Pennsylvania...right down to the hills and trees and the way the freeways and cities are built into them. Beautiful area, still. In Texas, we had what we called "trees": mesquites, palm trees, etc. Mostly overgrown bushes in the guise of trees. Up here, y'all have trees...and I mean trees everywhere. It's just nice, y'know?
Anyway. Just wanted to let y'all know I made it alive and in one piece to my new abode. I'll probably be offline until I get my laptop sorted out. :p

I'm envious. I love the DC area. :p As for it looking like PA, that's not really surprising. You're almost in PA. You're only about a 2 - 2.5 hour drive away, depending on how fast you drive.

Been a long time since we shot at the British. Didn't want to confuse 'em.

Just a few helpful tricks:
* Never drive on the beltway from 7-9 or 3-7 unless you have to.
* 66 is an HOV road in some sections.
* The Metro is NOT open 24 hours.

I used to live right across the river, in Georgetown!
If you're ever walking down R Street, and you pass that little park there -- you know, the one near the Dumbarton Oaks conservatory garden -- would you mind painting a huge sign and putting it there reading "The Supreme Ruler of the Universe used to play ball here"? Thanks a lot!
(Alternately, I'll do it the next time I'm down there, which might not be for a long time.)

I live in Herndon, and work in Sterling. I no longer drive on the Beltway unless I absolutely have to, which means that I haven't driven on it in months.
I drive the opposite way of traffic for about 5 minutes to get to work.
66 is a nightmare. So is 28.
I don't ride Metro anymore, because I try not to go downtown - I can't carry a gun there.

There are thousands of pine, oak, magnolia, and sweet gum trees where I live.
Come to think of it, there are a lot of "trees" in the Corpus Christi area... Hmm...

Think one in the morning, really shouldn't be out of the house, need to come back before 7, you get the idea.
I got lucky and found a taxi. That was really, really lucky.
Anyway, on the original topic, welcome! If you get a chance to go into the city, go to a restaurant called Spices at the Cleveland Park metro stop. It's fantastic.

We're a 24 hour society now. What good does it do to have the most efficient, effective and useful public transporation system if it stops running at midnight? We visit Alexandria most summers (my godfather lives there) and I love that I can take the Metro just about anywhere I want to go -- but having to be back by midnight is a bit of a downer. Last time we were there we went to Citronelle, but we had late reservations. (We were lucky to get them at all! The only way I could even get 9:00 was by dropping names.) Knowing that a Citronelle dinner can take quite long, we opted to drive meaning that we missed the wine pairings. Well, we paid for them, but being conscious of the need to drive we didn't fully partake. (Godfather lives within walking distance of a metro stop, and the neighborhood doesn't intimidate me, even at midnight.)
If it's not going to be 24/7, it could at least go until 3!
Sorry for the rant.

South Texas (Corpus Christi). Not much in the way of trees. You'll find some oaks and a few other types...but it's mostly palms and mesquites.
