Ok. This is not an ad, but it is a really really strong endorsement of the coolest gadget I've run across recently.

I've said before I don't have internet/broadband at home - mostly because it's too expensive but also because I am a die-hard laptop user that can't stand to be tethered to a wall. There was no way I was going to buy and dedicate even a POS PC to be a Dialup AP (and deal with all the hassles of another power-hungry OS dedicated peice of hardware). :headbang:

At the office I have a wifi setup and broadband, but at home I've been forced to use off-peak cell time and a 14.4k cell connection to do any posting at all.

Enter the WiFlyer. http://www.alwaysonwireless.com/wiflyer.html Mondo Cool. I convinced the boss to let me buy one. Basically it is a good old fashioned v.90 56kbps modem and 802.11b router rolled into a single ciggarette-pack sized package.

Oh the rapture! I found a $4.95/mo dialup ISP and in 5 minutes (mostly to set up WEP, Password & reboot the router) I was roaming the back porch and surfing at 56k!

It works as a regular broadband Access Point & 5 IP DNS too!

I am bouncing with happy goodness! YAY WIFLYER! :fluffle:

I feel tricked. I thought it'd be about a laptop with an NS theme on it. Which I'd've gotten.

My laptop has an NS theme... Cut'n'paste Jpgs for a Desktop is easy.

I just like posting from my back porch while watching the woods.

Well.. um..
I just bought a wireless router and a DSL modem. So I can have my router dial the modem to connect to high speed internet, and then I just lopen the internet in my home from anywhere in my home.

So um...
Nah nah nah nah nah, I've got a faster internet. Lol.

Yeah, but there are people out here who still have/are forced to have dialup and (until now) can't do the wireless thing without having one PC tethered to the wall.

The wiflyer is totally self contained and small. You can take it anywhere there is a phone line and have wifi access to your dialup ISP. That's what makes it so mondo cool.

No, no, I meant the case. At first I was all..."NS themed laptop? Omg! O.O w00t." *Shakes fist at your trickery* The wireless card for this computer no longer works. I had to reformat the comp, and the software refuses to work. Grr. So I know how it feels to be tethered.

I don't know how much use I have for it...I have T1 at work and Roadrunner with a wireless laptop at my apartment. Plus my cell phone's a piece of junk.

But there are still a few of us tied to dialup at home if we want more than intermittant 14.4kbps access. :headbang:

This is the best (and only) non-extra-pc alternative I've ever found. And believe me, I've looked.

I even chastized them for having lousy meta-tags in their website. I would have bought the first one off the production line if I had known about it earlier. (I've been fiddling with my own version for about 2 years... I just wasn't smart enough to patent the idea First. :( )

I must admit though, after 2 days of testing, I do think it needs a higher gain antenna than the stock internal one. My condo walls kill the signal too quickly. It workes everywhere I want it to, but the Link & Signal % are lower than I would like.

Still, it's a hellofa gadget.
